웹 기반의 공간정보예측시스템을 이용한 통합적 하수도 관리 시스템의 개발 및 적용 (An Integrated Sewer Management System using Web Based Predictive Spatial Information System)

  • Web based integrated sewer management system was developed for the analysis of sewer flow and for the optimal operation of sewer works using ArcView and SWMM. SWMM and ArcView were dynamically linked together using Avenue in order to construct user-friendly information management system. The developed system was applied to the residential area in Choonchun city to verify its utilities. All the relevant field data were analyzed on the basis of the developed system, and the modeling of sewer flow was implemented using RUNOFF, EXTRAN, TRANSPORT in SWMM. This system is now in the process of connection to the management system of stormwater, surface and subsurface environment in order to develop an integrated environmental management system. Futhermore, this system will be a critical part of overall control system of sewer works including sewer network and wastewater treatment plant. As this system can provide comprehensive prediction of flow and pollution profiles, it could serve as a tool not only for the optimal management, but also for the decision support system to examine the efficiency of planning and implementation of sewer projects.

Echolocation Call Structure of Fourteen Bat Species in Korea

  • The echolocation calls of bats can provide useful information about species that are generally difficult to observe in the field. In many cases characteristics of call structure can be used to identify species and also to obtain information about aspects of the bat's ecology. We describe and compare the echolocation call structure of 14 of the 21 bat species found in Korea, for most of which the ecology and behavior are poorly understood. In total, 1,129 pulses were analyzed from 93 echolocation call sequences of 14 species. Analyzed pulses could be classified into three types according to the pulse shape: FM/CF/FM type, FM type and FM/QCF type. Pulse structures of all species were consistent with previous studies, although geographic variation may be indicated in some species. Overall classification rate provided by the canonical discriminant analysis was relatively low. Especially in the genera Myotis and Murina, there are large overlaps in spectral and temporal parameters between species. On the other hand, classification rates for the FM/QCF type species were relatively high. The results show that acoustic monitoring could be a powerful tool for assessing bat activity and distribution in Korea, at least for FM/QCF and FM/CF/FM species.

미세유체소자와 디지털 홀로그래피 기술을 이용한 미생물의 3D 이미징과 세그먼테이션 (3D sensing and segmentation of microorganism using microfluidic device and digital holography)

  • 미세유체소자(microfluidic device)는 미생물과 관련된 다양한 작업들에 대해서 정확한 제어를 제공할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 미세유체 소자와 디지털 홀로그래피 마이크로스코피 기술로 구성된 시스템을 구성하고 미생물의 3D 이미징과 세그먼테이션을 설명한다. 각각의 미생물은 미세유체 채널을 통하여 흘러가며 홀로그래피 마이크로스코피가 홀로그램을 기록한다. 기록된 홀로그램은 Fresnel 변환을 통하여 컴퓨터적으로 복원되며, 복원된 영상의 위상성분을 이용하여 미생물의 위치 정보를 찾기 위한 세그먼테이션을 수행한다. 제안하는 방법의 유용함을 설명하기 위하여 광학 실험을 수행하고 그 결과를 나타내었다.

다중 SVM 알고리즘을 이용한 스트레스 지수에 따른 생체 감성 인식에 관한 연구 (The Study of Bio Emotion Cognition follow Stress Index Number by Multiplex SVM Algorithm)

  • 본 논문은 사용자의 생체 정보(맥박, 이완기 혈압, 수축기 혈압, 혈당)를 무선 센서들을 통하여 획득한 후 스트레스 지수에 따른 감성을 인식하여 대응되는 컬러와 음원을 분류하는 시스템으로서, 맥박 센서, 혈압 센서, 혈당 센서 등의 입력치를 받아 데이터베이스에 저장한 후 다중 SVM(Support Vector Machine) 알고리즘을 이용하여 스트레스 지수에 따른 감성을 분류한다. 2,000개의 데이터 집합을 사용하여 다중 SVM 알고리즘을 학습한 결과 약 87.7%의 정확도를 가졌다.

  • Metabolic analysis of biological tissues, the interventional radiology in MRT (Magnetic Resonance Treatment) and for clinical diagnoses, representation of 4-Dimensional (4D) structural information (x,y,z,t) of biological tissues is required. This paper discusses image representation techniques for those 4D MR Images. We have proposed an image reconstruction method for ultra-fast 3D MRI. It is based on image interpolation and prediction of un-acquired pictorial data in both of the real and the k-space (the acquisition domain in MRI). A 4D MR image is reconstructed from only two 3D MR images and acquired a few echo signals that are optimized by prediction of the tissue motion. This prediction can be done by the phase of acquired echo signal is proportioned to the tissue motion. On the other hand, reconstructed 4D MR images are represented as a 3D-movie by using computer graphics techniques. Rendered tissue surfaces and/or ROIs are displayed on a CRT monitor. It is represented in an arbitrary plane and/or rendered surface with their motion. As examples of the proposed representation techniques, the finger and the lung motion of healthy volunteers are demonstrated.

Identifying literature-based significant genes and discovering novel drug indications on PPI network

  • New drug development is time-consuming and costly. Hence, it is necessary to repurpose old drugs for finding new indication. We suggest the way that repurposing old drug using massive literature data and biological network. We supposed a disease-drug relationship can be available if signal pathways of the relationship include significant genes identified in literature data. This research is composed of three steps-identifying significant gene using co-occurrence in literature; analyzing the shortest path on biological network; and scoring a relationship with comparison between the significant genes and the shortest paths. Based on literatures, we identify significant genes based on the co-occurrence frequency between a gene and disease. With the network that include weight as possibility of interaction between genes, we use shortest paths on the network as signal pathways. We perform comparing genes that identified as significant gene and included on signal pathways, calculating the scores and then identifying the candidate drugs. With this processes, we show the drugs having new possibility of drug repurposing and the use of our method as the new method of drug repurposing.

Genetic diversity of chili pepper (Capsicum spp.) germplasm resources in Vietnam

  • Chili pepper (Capsicum annum) is origin of subtropical region, and has been spread all over the world. It is increasing the production and consumption in recent year. Chili peppers are readily incorporated into local South Asian cuisines perhaps because people are already familiar with pungent and spicy flavors. Chili peppers, despite their fiery "hotness", are one of very popular spices known for their medicinal and health benefiting properties. Especially in South East Asia, they grow up so many cultivars of them recently, so it is so important crop world wide. In South East Asia, there are some articles about chili pepper in Thailand and Indonesia, but in Vietnam there is not so much information about chili pepper. In this paper, we analyzed genetic diversity in Vietnamese Chili pepper through the survey of local chili pepper. As a result, we got 38 kinds of chili fruits, 26 kinds of leaves and some information from farmers all in Vietnam. And I made the phylogenetic tree by SSR with 10 DNA markers. Finally we found the genetic similarities by regions.

IntoPub: A Directory Server for Bioinformatics Tools and Databases

  • Bioinformatics tools and databases are useful for understanding and processing various biological data. Numerous resources are being published each year. It is not a trivial task to find up-to-date relevant tools and databases. Moreover, no server is available to provide comprehensive coverage on bioinformatics resources in all biological fields. Here, we present a directory server called IntoPub that provides information on web resources. First, we downloaded XML-formatted abstracts containing web URLs from the NCBI PubMed database by using 'ESearch-EFetch' function in the NCBI E-utilities. The information is obtained from abstracts in the PubMed by extracting 'www' or 'http' prefixes. Then, we cu-rate the downloaded abstracts both in automatic and manual fashion. As of July 2011, the IntoPub database has 12,118 abstracts containing web URLs from 174 journals. Our anal-ysis shows that the number of abstracts containing web resources has increased signifi-cantly every year. The server has been tested by many biologists from several countries to get opinion on user satisfaction, usefulness, practicability, and ease of use since January 2010. In the IntoPub web server, users can easily find relevant bioinformatics resources, as compared to searching in PubMed. IntoPub will continue to update and incorporate new web resources from PubMed and other literature databases. IntoPub, available at http://into.kobic.re.kr/, is updated every day.

흡착공정 모델링을 위한 시뮬레이션 시스템 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of Simulation System for Adsorption Process Modeling)

  • 생물 및 화학공정의 정제과정은 여러 단계의 크로마토그래프 분리공정을 포함할 수 있다. 최근 생명공학의 발전과 더불어 중요시되는 단백질과 같은 생물 분자의 분리를 위하여 크로마토그래피 흡착공정에 많은 관심이 집중되고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 흡착공정 모델링을 위한 시뮬레이션 시스템을 설계 및 구현하였다. 본 시스템은 흡착공정 모델링에 따른 시뮬레이션 결과 값을 시각화하거나 곡선 그래프로 나타나도록 하였다. 본 시스템의 개발은 회분식 흡착공정 모사프로그램에 중점을 두어 국한되어 개발하였다.

Electrophoretic Tissue Clearing and Labeling Methods for Volume Imaging of Whole Organs

  • Detailed structural and molecular imaging of intact organs has incurred academic interest because the associated technique is expected to provide innovative information for biological investigation and pathological diagnosis. The conventional methods for volume imaging include reconstruction of images obtained from serially sectioned tissues. This approach requires intense manual work which involves inevitable uncertainty and much time to assemble the whole image of a target organ. Recently, effective tissue clearing techniques including CLARITY and ACT-PRESTO have been reported that enables visualization of molecularly labeled structures within intact organs in three dimensions. The central principle of the methods is transformation of intact tissue into an optically transpicuous and macromolecule permeable state without loss of intrinsic structural integrity. The rapidly evolving protocols enable morphological analysis and molecular labeling of normal and pathological characteristics in large assembled biological systems with single-cell resolution. The deep tissue volume imaging will provide fundamental information about mutual interaction among adjacent structures such as connectivity of neural circuits; meso-connectome and clinically significant structural alterations according to pathologic mechanisms or treatment procedures.
