  • On human chromoscomes, a short sequence of DNA is known to repeat a number of times. These are called variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) or short tandem respeat (STR) which has a short core. VNTR and STR are used in the filed of forensic science, evolution, and anthropology. In this work, we examined allele frequencies of one VNTR (YNZ22) and three STRs (NeuR, D21S11, Humth01) in a korean population sample by polymerase chain reaction (RCP) followed by high-resolution polyacrylamide gel electro-phoresis (PAGE) with silver stain. Subsequently, the polymorphism information content (PIC) was calculated : the hifhest PIC was observed in the NeuR locus (0.95680) and lowest in the Humth01 locus (0.75809).

  • The genome sequencing project has generated and will continue to generate enormous amounts of sequence data including 5 eukaryotic and about 60 prokaryotic genomes. Given this ever-increasing amounts of sequence information, new strategies are necessary to efficiently pursue the next phase of the genome project-the elucidation of gene expression patterns and gene product function on a whole genome scale. In order to assign functional information to the genome sequence, DNA chip(or gene microarray) technology was developed to efficiently identify the differential expression pattern of independent biological samples. DNA chip provides a new tool for genome expression analysis that may revolutionize many aspects of biotechnology including new drug discovery and disease diagnostics.

  • All living things share some common life processes, such as growth and reproduction, and have the ability to respond to their environment. However, each type of organism has its own specialized way of managing biological events. Genetic sequences determine phenotypic and physiological traits. Based on genetic information, comparative genomics has been used to delineate the differences and similarities between various genomes, and significant progress has been made in understanding regenerative biology by comparing the genomes of a variety of lower animal models of regeneration, such as planaria, zebra fish, and newts. However, the genome of lizards has been relatively ignored until recently, even though lizards have been studied as an excellent amniote model of tissue regeneration. Very recently, whole genome sequences of lizards have been uncovered, and several attempts have been made to find regeneration factors based on genetic information. In this article, recent advances in comparative analysis of the lizard genome are introduced, and their biological implications and putative applications for regenerative medicine and stem cell biology are discussed.

  • Today, in response to chemical, biological and radiological terrorism has been active for the study. However, if chemical, biological and radiological attack has occurred to respond to the agency has not conducted the research. The purpose of this study are as follows. First, South Korea and the United States 'CBR terrorism' comparative analysis of the response system. Second, South Korea 'CBR terrorism' measures to improve the system response is presented. To achieve the purpose of this study, the following research is carried out. First, determine the status of the case of CBR incident. Second, the United States 'CBR terrorism' response systems and organizational approaches. Third, Korea's 'CBR terrorism' response system and the problem is derived.

  • The computational modeling and simulation of complex biological systems are indispensable for new knowledge extraction from huge experimental data and ever growing vast amount of information in systems biology. Moreover, gathering and sharing of the existing information and newly-generated knowledge can speed up this research process. In this regard, several modeling projects have been undertaken for quantitatively analyzing the biological systems via the internet. They include Virtual Cell, JWS and OBIYagns. We also develop an integrated web-based environment, which facilitate investigation of dynamic behavior of cellular systems.

  • This study is for the contents of development to the hardware system and software driving algorithm to implement the frequency band of about 7KHz los pass digital filter which has the cut-off frequency of 392Hz by interfacing of a microprocessor with its peripheral analog-to-digital converter chip and digital-to-analog converter chip. The simplicity of digital filter design without difficulty and the implementation of programmed digital filter can be realized by providing the interfacing method to implement the law pass digital filter for the biological signals and the realization method of computer algorithm by a microprocessor.

  • This study is based on crane fly specimens collected more than 80 years ago in 1938-1939 and preserved at the United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA. Despite many attempts with a variety of methods, no additional specimens of this genus were captured. This likely means that that this genus is extinct on the Korean Peninsula, or its distribution is restricted to the northern areas of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The genus Prionolabis Osten Sacken, 1860 with four species, one of them Prionolabis dis(Alexander, 1950) endemic to North Korea, was recorded by Ch. P. Alexander (Alexander, 1938, 1940, 1950). All succeeding papers listing these species were based on these original works without study based on actual specimens. For each species, we present general information on genus, redescriptions of species based on Korean specimens, illustrations of important taxonomical structures, elevation range, period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map for the Korean Peninsula.

  • Taste sensation is the process of converting chemical identities in food into a neural code of the brain. Taste information is initially formed in the taste buds on the tongue, travels through the afferent gustatory nerves to the sensory ganglion neurons, and finally reaches the multiple taste centers of the brain. In the taste field, optical tools to observe cellularlevel functions play a pivotal role in understanding how taste information is processed along a pathway. In this review, we introduce recent advances in the optical tools used to study the taste transduction pathways.
