  • Until now, substring selectivities have been estimated by two steps. First step is to build up a count-suffix tree, which has statistical information about substrings, and second step is to estimate substring selectivity using it. However, it's actually impossible to build up a count-suffix tree from biological sequences because their lengths are too long. So, this paper proposes a novel data structure, count q-gram tree, consisting of fixed length substrings. The Count q-gram tree retains the exact counts of all substrings whose lengths are equal to or less than q and this tree is generated in 0(N) time and in site not subject to total length of all sequences, N. This paper also presents an estimation technique, k-MO. k-MO can choose overlapping length of splitted substrings from a query string, and this choice will affect accuracy of selectivity and query processing time. Experiments show k-MO can estimate very accurately.

  • Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone secreted from primarily cells of the peritubular capillary endothelium of the kidney, and is responsible for the regulation of red blood cell production. We constructed and expressed dimeric cDNAs in Chinease hamster ovary (CHO) cells encoding a fusion protein consisting of 2 complete human EPO domains linked by a 2-amino acid linker (Ile-Asp). We described the activity of dimeric hyperglycosylated EPO (dHGEPO) mutants containing additional oligosaccharide chains and characterized the function of glycosylation. No dimeric proteins with mutation at the $105^{th}$ amino acid were found in the cell medium. Growth and differentiation of the human EPO-dependent leukemiae cell line (F36E) were used to measure cytokine dependency and in vitro bioactivity of dHGEPO proteins. MIT assay at 24 h increased due to the survival of F36E cells. The dHGEPO protein migrated as a broad band with an average molecular mass of 75 kDa. The mutant, dHGEPO, was slightly higher than the wild-type (WT) dimeri-EPO band. Enzymatic N-deglycosylation resulted in the formation of a narrow band with a molecular mass twice of that of of monomeric EPO digested with an N-glycosylation enzyme. Hematocrit values were remarkably increased in all treatment groups. Pharmacokinetic analysis was also affected when 2.5 IU of dHGEPO were intravenously injected into the tails of the mice. The biological activity and half-life of dHGEPO mutants were enhanced as compared to the corresponding items associated the WT dimeric EPO. These results suggest that recombinant dHGEPO may be attractive biological and therapeutic targets.

  • Agricultural pesticides may cause certain biological risks since they are widely used to eradicate pests. Agricultural disasters may arise even from the possibility of their synergistic interaction with other harmful enviromnetal factors. The effect of pesticide on radiation-induced DNA damage in human blood lymphocytes was evaluated by the single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay. The lymphocytes, with or without pretreatment of the pesticide, were exposed to 0-2.0 Gy of $^60 CO$ gamma ray. Significantly increased tail moment, which was a marker of DNA strand breaks in SCGE assay, showed an excellent dose-response relationship. The present study confirms that the pesticide has the cytotoxic effect on lymphocytes and that it shows the synergistic interaction with radiation on DNA damage as well. The results may have a role of providing biological information necessary for the prevention of environmental disaster.

  • Relationships between soil saturated hydraulic conductivity ($K_s$) and porosity (${\phi}$) have been developed over many years; however, use of these relationships for evaluating rain-induced seals is limited mainly because of difficulties in estimating seal pore-size characteristics. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the $K_s$ of soil surface seals over a range of thicknesses, where seal thickness was determined using a High-Resolution-Computed-Tomography (HRCT) scanner, and to investigate relationships between $K_s$ and ${\phi}$ of developing seals in samples with equivalent diameters (e.d.) ${\geq}15\;{\mu}m$. A Mexico silt loam soil was packed to a bulk density (${\rho}_b$) of $1.1\;Mg\;m^{-3}$ in cylinders 160-mm i.d. by 160-mm long and subjected to $61-mm\;h^{-1}$ simulated rainfall having a kinetic energy (KE) of $25\;J\;m^{-2}\;min^{-1}$ for 7.5, 15, 30, and 60 min to create a range in seal development. Thicknesses of the seal layers were determined by analysis of HRCT images of seals. The $K_s$ values of the seals were estimated using an effective $K_s$ value ($K_{s-eff}$). The $K_s-{\phi}$ relationship was described by a Kozeny and Carmen equation, $K_s=B{\phi}^n$; where B and n are empirical constants and n = 31. This approach explained 86% of the variation between $K_s$ and ${\phi}$ within the soil seals. Knowledge of surface seal information and hydraulic conductivity can provide useful information to use in management of sites prone to sealing formation.

  • Recently, the rapid development of biotechnology brings the explosion of biological data and biological data host. Moreover, these data are highly distributed and heterogeneous, reflecting the distribution and heterogeneity of the Molecular Biology research community. As a consequence, the integration and interoperability of molecular biology databases are issue of considerable importance. But, up to now, most of the integrated systems such as link based system, data warehouse based system have many problems which are keeping the data up to date when the schema and data of the data source are changed. For this reason, the integrated system using web service technology that allow biological data to be fully exploited have been proposed. In this paper, we built the integrated system if the bio sequence information bated on the web service technology. The developed system allows users to get data with many format such as BSML, GenBank, Fasta to traverse disparate data resources. Also, it has better retrieval performance because the retrieval modules of the external database proceed in parallel.

  • Hwapocheon stream is located in Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, and a part was declared a protected wetland area in 2017. In 2020 and 2021, we investigated the community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates of the Hwapocheon stream to provide ecological information for the management of the wetland. As a result, 4 phyla, 6 classes, 20 orders, 51 families, 83 species, and 2,621 individuals of benthic macroinvertebrates were identified. The average indices of diversity, richness, and evenness were the highest in the midstream area, whereas the highest average index of dominance was observed upstream. Seven biological water quality evaluations based on the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates showed that the Biological Monitoring Working Party was an extremely suitable method for environmental evaluation of the Hwapocheon stream. Regarding functional feeding groups, the number of species of predators and gathering-collectors was the highest, and considering habitual dwelling groups, the number of species of clingers and sprawlers was the highest. The species number of Odonata, Hemiptera, and Coleoptera increased toward the downstream area, whereas the community loss index was the highest upstream. We also investigated relative resistance and resilience based on the distribution of aquatic insects and found that community stability was the highest downstream, whereas the lowest upstream.

  • A leather quality inspection by naked eyes has known as unreliable because of its biological characteristics like accumulated fatigue caused from an optical illusion and biological phenomenon. Therefore it is necessary to automate the leather quality inspection by computer vision technique. In this paper, we present automatic leather qua1ity classification system get information from leather surface. Leather is usually graded by its information such as texture density, types and distribution of defects. The presented algorithm explain how we analyze leather information like texture density and defects from the gray-level images obtained by digital camera. The density data is computed by its ratio of distribution area, width, and height of Fourier spectrum magnitude. And the defect information of leather surface can be obtained by histogram distribution of pixels which is Windowed from preprocessed images. The information for entire leather could be a standard for grading leather quality. The proposed leather inspection system using machine vision can also be applied to another field to substitute human eye inspection.

  • Biological early warning system detects toxicity by looking at behavior of organisms in water. The system uses classifier for judgement about existence and amount of toxicity in water. Boosting algorithm is one of possible application method for improving performance in a classifier. Boosting repetitively change training example set by focusing on difficult examples in basic classifier. As a result, prediction performance is improved for the events which are difficult to classify, but the information contained in the events which can be easily classified are discarded. In this paper, an incremental learning method to overcome this shortcoming is proposed by using the extended data expression. In this algorithm, decision tree classifier define class distribution information using the weight parameter in the extended data expression by exploiting the necessary information not only from the well classified, but also from the weakly classified events. Experimental results show that the new algorithm outperforms the former Learn++ method without using the weight parameter.
