Biogenic amines in some food products present considerable toxicological risks as potential human carcinogens when consumed in excess concentrations. In this study, we investigated the degradation of the biogenic amines histamine and tyramine and the presence of genes encoding histidine and tyrosine decarboxylases and amine oxidase in Bacillus species isolated from fermented soybean food. No expression of histidine and tyrosine decarboxylase genes (hdc and tydc) were detected in the Bacillus species isolated (B. subtilis HJ0-6, B. subtilis D'J53-4, and B. idriensis RD13-10), although substantial levels of amine oxidase gene (yobN) expression were observed. We also found that the three selected strains, as non-biogenic amineproducing bacteria, were significantly able to degrade the biogenic amines histamine and tyramine. These results indicated that the selected Bacillus species could be used as a starter culture for the control of biogenic amine accumulation and degradation in food. Our study findings also provided the basis for the development of potential biological control agents against these biogenic amines for use in the food preservation and food safety sectors.
In biological wastewater treatment, high lipid concentrations can inhibit the activity of microorganisms critical to the treatment process and cause undesirable biomass flotation. To reduce the inhibitory effects of high lipid concentrations, a two-phase anaerobic system, consisting of an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) and an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor in series, was applied to synthetic dairy wastewater treatment. During 153 days of operation, the two-phase system showed stable performance in lipid degradation. In the ASBR, a 13% lipid removal efficiency and 10% double-bond removal efficiency were maintained. In the UASB, the chemical oxygen demand (COD), lipid, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) removal efficiencies were greater than 80%, 70%, and 95%, respectively, up to an organic loading rate of 6.5 g COD/l/day. No serious operational problems, such as significant scum formation or sludge washout, were observed. Protein degradation was found to occur prior to degradation during acidogenesis.
A membrane bioreactor (MBR) was used to investigate the aerobic degradation of foam active substance - non-ionic surfactant, APG 2000 UP. The surface aeration using the propeller loop reactor (PLR) guaranteed sufficient $O_2$ for substrate removal and bacteria growth and avoided foam development. Moreover, the cross-flow membrane filtration enabled the separation of the bacteria still loaded with surfactant in the collecting container. The biological degradation of the surfactant with varying hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent concentration $c_{S0}$ showed high substrate removal of nearly 95% at high volumetric loading rates up to $7.4\;kgCOD\;m^{-3}d^{-1}$ and at sludge loading rates up to 1.8 kgCOD $(kgVSS\;d)^{-1}$ for biomass concentration $c_B\;{\approx}\;constant $. The increasing $c_B$ from 3.4 to $14.5\;gL^{-1}$ TSS respectively sludge retention time (SRT) from 5.1 to 442 d under complete biomass retention by the membrane filtration resulted in high removal of substrate ${\alpha}\;>\;90%$ with reducing excess sludge production.

Recent studies have shown that some of the PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl)-degraders are able to effectively degrade PCB in the presence of monoterpenes, which act as inducers for the degradation pathway. Rhodococcus sp. T104, an effective PCB degrader, has been shown to induce the degradation pathway by utilizing limonenes, cymenes, carvones, and pinenes as sole carbon sources which can be found in the natural environment. Moreover, the strain T104 proved to possess three separate oxidation pathways of limonene, biphenyl, and phenol. Of these three, the limonene can also induce the biphenyl degradation pathway. In this work, we report the presence of three distinct genes for aromatic oxygenase, which are putatively involved in the degradation of aromatic substrates including biphenyl, limonene, and phenol, through PCR amplification and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The genes were differentially expressed and well induced by limonene, cymene, and plant extract A compared to biphenyl and/or glucose. This indicates that substrate specificity must be taken into account when biodegradation of the target compounds are facilitated by the plant natural substrates.

Numerical simulation was carried out to study the trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by permeable reactive barrier (PRB), and revealed the effect of concentration of TCE, iron medium mass, and concentration of iron-reducing bacteria (IRB). Newly developed model was based on axial dispersion reactor model with chemical and biological reaction terms and was implemented using MATLAB ver R2006A for the numerical solutions of dispersion, convection, and reactions over column length and elapsed time. The reaction terms include reactions of TCE degradation by zero-valent iron (ZVI, Fe$^0$) and ferrous iron (Fe$^{2+}$). TCE concentration in the column inlet was maintained as 10 mg/L. Equation for Fe$^0$ degradation includes only TCE reaction term, while one for Fe$^{2+}$ has chemical and biological reaction terms with TCE and IRB, respectively. Two coupled equations eventually modeled the change of TCE concentration in a column. At Fe$^0$ column, TCE degradation rate was found to be more than 99% from 60 hours to 235 hours, and declined to less than 1% in 1,365 hours. At the Fe$^{2+}$ and IRB mixed column, TCE degradation rate was equilibrated at 85.3% after 210 hours and kept it constant. These results imply that the ferrous iron produced by IRB has lowered the TCE degradation efficiency than ZVI but it can have higher longevity.http://kci.go.kr/kciportal/ci/contents/ciConnReprerSearchPopup.kci#
Thermal degradation of ${\beta}-carotene$, major carotenoid present in cured tobacco leaves, were carried out at $400,\;600,\;and\;800^{\circ}C$ which are similar to temperatures existing in the combustion zones of cigarettes, and subsequent volatile degradation products were analyzed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The volatile compounds identified from degradation products included 36 aromatic hydrocarbons, 10 ${\beta}-ionone-related$ compounds which have trimethylcyclohexane ring, and 7 others. Of these, 37 compounds including ${\beta}-cyclogeraniol$ had not been previously reported in the literature as thermal degradation products of ${\beta}-carotene$. The major compounds of degradation products at $400\;and\;600^{\circ}C$ were ${\beta}-xylene,\;{\alpha}-terpinene,\;{beta}-cyclocitral,\;ionene\;(1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,1,6-trimethyl\;naphthalene),\;{\beta}-ionone$, and dihydroactinidiolide. The major compounds at $800^{\circ}C$ were the above six compounds plus toluene.
The biodegradable hyaluronic acid membranes cross-linked with lactide using the crosslinking agent, 1,3-butadiene diepoxide (BD), were prepared as a potential biocompatible material for tissue engineering. The degree of lactide and BD reaction of the crosslinked membrane was determined by the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy 6% of growth inhibition was observed in case of high BD concentration but the value is low enough not to affect cell growth. As the crosslinking reaction temperature increased, elongation increased and swelling ratio decreased. The rate of degradation was found to increase with the crosslinking temperature. The drug release experiment showed that the transport of drug through the membrane decreased with the crosslinking temperature.

In this study, an electrical conductive carbon fiber was used as a biofilter matrix to electrochemically improve the biofilter function. A bioreactor system was composed of carbon fiber (anode), titanium ring, porcelain ring, inorganic nutrient reservoir, and VOC reservoir. Electric DC power of 1.5 volt was charged to the carbon fiber anode (CFA) to induce the electrochemical oxidation potential on the biofilter matrix, but not to the carbon fiber (CF). We tested the effects of electrochemical oxidation potential charged to the CFA on the biofilm structure, the bacterial growth, and the activity for metabolic oxidation of VOCs to $CO_2$, According to the SEM image, the biofilm structure developed in the CFA appeared to be greatly different from that in the CF. The bacterial growth, VOCs degradation, and metabolic oxidation of VOCs to $CO_2$ in the CFA were more activated than those in the CF. On the basis of these results, we propose that the biofilm structure can be improved, and the bacterial growth and the bacterial oxidation activity of VOCs can be activated by the electrochemical oxidation potential charged to a biofilter matrix.
In an effort to elucidate degradation mechanisms of an acetanilide herbicide, Butachlor, by soil microorganisms, a common soil fungus, Chaetomium globosum which is known to be powerful was selected and incubated in a Butachlor-contained medium. The results obtained from the resulting metabolites are as follows: (1) Dechlorination from Butachlor occurred very easily, remaining almost constant after 180 hrs. of incubation. (2) More than 10 metabolites were isolated and characterized, of which the metabolites, m/e 205, 177, 223, 182, and 206 were the main products. (3) In this paper, the structures and pathways of formation of metabolites, m/e 206, 182, 223, 225, and 189 were tentatively proposed.
