  • A large number of chemical constituents have been reported from the Himalayan yew [Taxus baccata (Linn) or T. wallichiana (Zucc)]. These constituents are mainly taxoids and phenolics. Taxol, a lead anticancer agent, is the most important constituent. Other compounds have also been found to possess interesting biological properties. The literature concerning the chemistry and bioactivity of the constituents of the Himalayan yew has been briefly reviewed.

  • It has been known that quercetin is one of bioflavonid compounds and has anti-tumor effect by suppressing tumor growth in vitro and in vivo, including multiple biological effects by antioxidant and effective anti-inflammatory agent. The present study investigated whether quercetin can enhance antioxidant enzyme activity (glutathione proxidase: GPX, superoxide dismutase: SOD, catalase: CAT) and regulate the intracellular reactive oxygen intermediate levels on the B16F10 murine melanoma cells in the presensece of vitamin E, L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and reduced glutathione (GSH). • The antiparasitic agent apicidin, which was recently isolated from cultures of Fusarium Pallidoroseum, belongs to a rare group of cyclictetrapeptide fungal metabolites. Apicidin inhibits protozoal HDAC and is orally active against Plasmodium berghei malaria in mice. The biological activity of apicidin appears to be attributable to inhibition of apicomplexan HDAC at low nanomolar concentrations. In the present, we have worked about the synthesis of new apicidin derivatives and discovered that apicidin and some derivatives have mild antitumor activity. (omiited)

  • Lonicerae Folium et Caulis, the folium and stem of Lonicera japonica Thunb., has been used as diuretic, stomachic, antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent in Korea. We isolated a main iridoid, loganin which has some important biological effects from the folium and stem of this plant. Generally, it is known that iridoid compounds have variable contents by the collecting time and a part of plant. The content of main compound is important to evaluate its quality. In order to evaluate the quality of Lonicerae Folium et Caulis, the method of quantitative determination of loganin as a reference standard compound has been developed. (omitted)

  • Apio nucleosides whose 4'-hydroxymethyl group moves to 3'-position exhibit interesting biological activity such as antitumor or antiviral activity. On the other hand. neplanocin A is the representative of the carbocyclic nucleosides and has been recognized as a potent antitumor and antiviral agent. Based on these findings. it was of great interest to design apio neplanocia A which combined the properties of apio nucleosides and neplanocin A. (omitted)

  • Maintenance of an optimal air quality in the enclosed pig building is potentially important in terms of pig performance and farmer health. The objective of this on-site experiment is to evaluate and compare efficiencies of currently utilized biological additives to reduce odor emissions from the enclosed pig building. As a result, generally all the additives except for salt water, artificial spice and essential oil were proved ineffective in reducing odor generation. The beneficial effects of salt water, artificial spice and essential oil on odor reduction were highlighted on ammonia, odor intensity and offensiveness, and sulfuric odorous compounds, respectively. To efficiently utilize odor masking agent such as the artificial spice, ventilation rate should keep slightly lower than the optimal level. Essential oil functioned well as not only masking agent but also antimicrobial agent for reducing odor. To precisely quantify odor concentration, it should be measured by not the odor sensor but the olfactometry technique.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the melanogenesis inhibiting activity of the ethanol extract from Polygonum amphibium L. Firstly, the n-hexane (Hx), chloroform ($CHCl_3$), ethyl acetate (EA), n-butanol (BuOH), and water (Water) fractions were isolated from the P. amphibium L. ethanol extract. The efficacy of melanogenesis was found to significantly decrease via the EA and BuOH fractions when compared to the control in B16F10 cells. EA particularly showed the lowest melanin content in B16F10 cells when compared to all the other extracts. Concentration-dependent inhibition of melanin synthesis was also observed in the EA fraction at concentrations below $50{\mu}g/ml$, which did not exhibit cytotoxicity in B16F10 cells. Notably, the expression of three key proteins (tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP-1), and TRP-2), which are involved in melanogenesis, were significantly decreased via the EA fraction. EA also inhibited body pigmentation in vivo in a zebrafish model. Overall, we demonstrated melanogenesis suppression using the EA fraction from P. amphibium L., which could be a potential candidate for an antimelanogenesis agent.

  • Recently, there is much interest in the antimicrobial activity of silver since silver has known to be safe and effective as a disinfectant or an antimicrobial agent against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. Although silver has been applied to various kinds of products due to the effective antimicrobial activity, the quantitative antimicrobial activity or detailed mechanism of silver is not clearly investigated yet, causing the controversy and confusion. In this review paper, we summarized the characteristics, antimicrobial activities and mechanisms, synergistic effects with other antimicrobials, and applicability of silver.
