Electrogastrography(EGG) is the technique by which gastric myoelectrical activity is recorded noninvasively, from surface electrodes on the abdominal skin. In older to know the relation between the signal of the gastric mil and the EGG signal, we measured the gastric myoelectrical activity in animals using surface electrodes and serosal electrodes, and measured the gastric contraction simultaneously using a strain gauge attached to the gastric wall we compared the signals with and without the gastric contraction.
Integrated coastal management (ICM) requires robust indicators that gauge the 'health' of the coast in relation to environmental, social and economic activities. Biological indicators(bio-indicators) offer a signal of the biological condition in an ecosystem. Using bio-indicators as an early warning of pollution or degradation in an ecosystem can help sustain critical resources. This review examines the rationale and value of selecting species as bio-indicators of human induced changes within estuaries, using examples from both the western and southern coast. It include a range of biological parameters relating to particular species, groups of species and biological processes. The use of these indicators is critically reviewed and the presence or absence of a relevant framework for their use in Korean ICM programs is discussed.
Many researchers had considered biological systems as linear systems. In many cases of biological systems, the phenomena that show the regular and periodic dynamics are considered the normal state. However, some clinical experiments reported, in some cases, the periodic signals represented the abnormal state. We assume that signals from human body system are generated from deterministic, intrinsic mechanisms and can be represented a simple equation that show nonlinear dynamics dependent on control parameters. The objective of our study is to model a nonlinear dynamics correctly from the nonlinear time series using the genetic programming method; to find a simple equation of nonlinear dynamics using collected time series and its nonlinear characteristics. We applied genetic programming to model RR interval of ECG that shows chaotic phenomena. We used 4 statistic measures and 2 fractal measures to estimate fitness of each chromosome, and could obtain good solutions of which chaotic features are similar.
The solution conformation of the human insulin precursor, preproinsulin, is described in terms of NMR spectral data. NMR experiments were performed on preproinsulin, whose structure was compared with the NMR structure of native human insulin. Despite the presence of the C-peptide and/or the signal peptide, secondary structure analyses indicate that the native structures of the A and B chains are well conserved even in preproinsulin. The observed relative robustness of the native structure in precursor forms permits further protein engineering experiments where the C-peptide or N-terminal signal sequence can be altered for the purpose of increasing expression or purification yields when producing recombinant human insulin.
The conformations of human insulin precursors, proinsulin and preproinsulin, are described in terms of molecular dynamics simulations. Despite the presence of the C-peptide and/or the signal peptide, molecular dynamics calculations utilizing the hydration shell model over a period of 500 ps indicate that the native conformations of the A and B chains are well conserved in both cases. These results further support the NMR spectroscopy results that the C-peptide is relatively disordered and does not influence the overall conformation of the native structure. The robustness of the native structure as demonstrated by experiment and simulation will permit future protein engineering applications, whereby the expression or purification yields can be improved upon sequence modification of the C-peptide and/or the signal peptide.
To improve signal-to-noise ratio in sodium image, short echo time (2-3 ms) and long data acquisition (10-20 ms) protocols are used. Sodium in biological specimens demonstrates a bi-exponential decay of transverse magnetization and the fast decaying component of the sodium signal results in the reconstruction of images which are blurred significantly. The spatially-dependent nature of the blurs are due mainly to the presence of short local transverse relaxation values (0.7-3 ms) of sodium in tissue. We present an algorithm that corrects for object-dependent blurs due to fast-decaying T2 and improves the computational behavior of the algorithm by incorporating a relaxation parameter into the iterative process.
Interferons regulate a number of biological functions including control of cell proliferation, generation of antiviral activities and immumodulation in human cells. Studies by several investigators have identified a number of cellular signaling cascades that are activated during engagement of interferon receptors. The activation of multiple signaling cascades by the interferon receptors appears to be critical for the generation of interferon mediated biological functions and immune surveillance. The present review summarizes the existing knowledge on the multiple signaling cascades activated by Type I interferons. Recent developments in this research area are emphasized and the implications of these new discoveries on our understanding of interferon actions are discussed.
Major depressive disorder is characterized by cellular and molecular alterations resulting in the depressive behavioral phenotypes. Preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated the deficits, including cell atrophy and loss, in limbic and cortical regions of patients with depression, which is restored with antidepressants by reestablishing proper molecular changes. These findings have implicated the involvement of relevant intracellular signaling pathways in the pathogenetic and therapeutic mechanisms of depressive disorders. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the signal transduction mechanisms related to depressive disorders, including cyclic-AMP, mitogen-activated protein kinase, Akt, and protein translation initiation signaling cascades. Understanding molecular components of signaling pathways regulating neurobiology of depressive disorders may provide the novel targets for the development of more efficacious treatment modalities.
In this paper, we present the Computerized Polysomnographic System, which we developed for aiding manual polysomnographic diagnonis. This system is composed of four sub parts: patient information management tool, polysomno-graphic signal acquisition tool, signal analysis tool, and result-reporting tool. We calculated the parameters of sleep diagnosis, both on the sleep stage hypnogram and event lists. We developed this system on the Windows NT 4.0 and Pentium Pro 200Mhz. We are testing this system on the clinical site.
The display of biological signals in monitors often involves a multirate sampling operation which consists of decimation and intenolation. All electroencephalographic (EEG) samples of 10 to 30 seconds must be displayed in the computer screen to keep the aspect ratio of the paper polygraph output. Since the current affordable display technology plots at most 2,000 pixels per row, some samples need to be discarded. This paper studies methods to perform this operation characterizing them from the signal processing viewpoint and compares the display quality among several decimations. Experimental results show that a nonlinear operation such as the peak detection could be preferable than the canonical linear filtering to reduce aliasing.
