  • Bacterial vaginosis can be treated by restoring the normal vaginal flora using lactobacilli. Lactobacillus crispatus KLB46 that was isolated from the human vagina has a string antimicrobial activity and was grown in a batch and in a continuous fermentor. During batch cultivation, the maximum specific growth rate of L. crispatus KLB 46 was 0.63h(sup)-1 and the highest viable cell count (1.9$\times$10(sup)9 CFU/mL) was obtained at pH 5.5. L. crispatus KLB 46 did not grow well at either pH 3.5 or 7.5. During continuous cultivation, the highest viable cell count (1.53$\times$10(sup)9 CFU/mL) was obtained at a dilution rate of 0.32h(sup)-1, and was 7.33$\times$10(sup)11 CFU L(sup)-1 h(sup)-1, that is approximately 5 times higher than that obtained from batch culture.

  • Among 59 Korean isolated, 20 were confirmed as members of the genus Bifidobaferium species based on gram staining, microscopic examination of cell morphology and the TLC method, The oxygen tolerance and antioxidative activities of these 20 Bifidobacterium strains and 5 standard Bifidobaferium strains were tested. All the strains demonstrated antioxidative activities as regards inhibiting linoleic acid peroxidation. The antioxidative activities of isolated and standard strains were found to range from 10.7-46.4% and from 10.7-22.2%, respectively. In addition, all tested strains exhibited a Scavenging ability on DPPH free radicals, range from 15-41% for the isolated strains and 8.3-22% for the standard strain. Accordingly. the isolated Bifidobarterium strains demonstrated higher antioxidative artivities than the 5 standa rd Bifidobarterium strains. On the base of grades for each test, HJL 7511 was identified 35 the best strain, followed by HJL 7501. 2 strains were identified with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay using group-specific primers designed from the nucleotide Sequences of the 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the Bifidobacteria. Based on the Sequencing results, HJL 7511 and HJL 7501 were identified as Bifidobacterium infantis.

  • Nowdays, many people suffer from the neck pain due to forward head posture(FHP) and text neck(TN). To assess the severity of the FHP and TN the craniovertebral angle(CVA) is used in clinincs. However, it is difficult to monitor the neck posture using the CVA in daily life. We propose a new method using the cervical flexion angle(CFA) obtained from a wearable sensor to monitor neck posture in daily life. 15 participants were requested to pose FHP and TN. The CFA from the wearable sensor was compared with the CVA observed from a 3D motion camera system to analyze their correlation. The determination coefficients between CFA and CVA were 0.80 in TN and 0.57 in FHP, and 0.69 in TN and FHP. From the monitoring the neck posture while using laptop computer for 20 minutes, this wearable sensor can estimate the CVA with the mean squared error of 2.1 degree.

  • Gene regulation is a fundamental process in biological systems, where transcription factors (TFs) play crucial roles. Inferring transcriptional interactions between TFs and their target genes has utmost importance for understanding the complex regulatory mechanisms in cellular systems. On one hand, with the rapid progress of various high-throughput experiment techniques, more and more biological data become available, which makes it possible to quantitatively study gene regulation in a systematic manner. On the other hand, transcription regulation is a complex biological process mediated by many events such as post-translational modifications, degradation, and competitive binding of multiple TFs. In this review, with a particular emphasis on computational methods, we report the recent advances of the research topics related to transcriptional regulatory networks, including how to infer transcriptional interactions, reveal combinatorial regulation mechanisms, and reconstruct TF activity profiles.

  • The swine waste industry is growing rapidly along with the world human population. The trend is toward more concentrated piggeries with numbers of herds in the thousands. Associated with these increased herds are large quantities of wastes, including organic matter, inorganic nutrients, and gaseous emissions. The trend in swine waste management is toward treatment of these wastes to minimize negative impact on the health and comfort of workers and animals and the atmosphere, water, and soil environments. Treatment of these wastes has traditionally involved land application, lagoons, oxidation ditches, and conventional batch and continuously stirred reactor designs. More sophisticated treatment systems are being implemented, involving advanced anaerobic digester designs, integrated with solids separation, aerobic polishing of digester effluents, and biological nutrient removal. This review discusses the present and future role of anaerobic processes in piggery waste treatment with emphasis on reactor design, operating and performance parameters, and effluent processing.

  • Current information storage devices, such as HDD, CD/DVD-ROM/RW, probe-based memory and hologram memory, are compared with biological information storage mechanisms in DNA and brain memory. Newly developed approaches to overcome the limit of storage capacity are introduced in both magnetic and optical recording devices. Linear and areal density of information stored in the biological and mechanical storages are compared for the applications and developments of new storage devices.

  • Monoterpenes, in special limonene and its derivatives, are well studied in the literature due to their several properties. They are well recognized as major components of essential oils; some of them, are important industry residues, and others present some important biological activities. In this review, the biotransformation of the inexpensive limonene into flavor compounds was briefly reviewed and the main pathways for limonene biotransformation are presented. Furthermore, some important biological properties of these compounds were also considered, like bactericidal activity, induction of immune response, and role in disease prevention, with a little emphasis on some possibilities related to the mechanisms of anticancer action.

  • In this paper, center frequency down slift of ultrasonic echo signals which for the measurements of frequency dependent attenuation in the biological tissue are estimated. Center frequency down shift of echo-signals are estimated after signal spectrum analysis of whole echo-signals. In case of signal spectrums are simple, estimation of down shift frequency is very simple and in case of complicate spectrum, estimation of down shift frequency is depend on spectral shape. In case of unable to estimate, frequency dependence of medium is nonlinear(n) 1), in which upper shift of spectrums are presented. In case of unable to estimate, spectrum analysis are performed at local position. At consquence, we know that spectral dispersions are caused complicately by biological tissue layer.
