  • Experiments were accomplished to reduce the extent of proteolysis by simply controlling the culture conditions instead of the gene manipulation techniques. L-arginine and L-lysine were chosen as a protease inhibitor analogue With the assumption that they might act as the potential inhibitors against proteases involved in the rHSA proteolysis. The addition of arginine and lysine resulted in a considerable positive effect on the secreted rHSA production level.

  • In present study, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and hydrophobically modified poly(ethylene oxide) (HM-PEO) multilayers based on the hydrogen bonding between the component polymer pair have been prepared by the LbL deposition method. Dip assembled HM-PEO/PAA multilayers yield unique film morphologies in comparison with PEO/PAA multilayers due to the micellar formation of HM-PEO owing to the hydrophobic attraction between alkyl chains end-capped with the PEO chains. Individual HM-PEO micelles were connected through the bridging PEO chains to form temporary networks on multilayer surface and induced peculiar surface morphology on HM-PEO/PAA multilayers above the critical number of bilayers.

  • In summary, we have demonstrated soft lithographic application of HA (or polysaccharides in general) by means of ${\mu}CP$ and molding and constructed well-defined patterns of proteins and cells of various substrates including glass, silicon dioxides, poly(HEMA), polystyrene culture dishes, and biodegradable PLGA. These results suggest that HA could be used as a general platform on hydrophilic substrates.

  • Simplified model of slide-fed curtain coating flow has been developed and tested in this study. It rests on the sheet profile equations for curtain thickness in curtain flow and its trajectory derived by the integral momentum balance approach of Higgins and Scriven (1979) and Kistler (1983). It also draws on the film profile equation of film thickness variation in flow down a slide. The equations have been solved in finite difference approximation by Newton iteration with continuation. The results show that how inertia (Reynolds number), surface tension (capillary number), inclination angle of the slide, and air pressure difference across the curtain affect sheet trajectory and thickness profile. It has been revealed that approximate models can be useful to easily analyze coating flow dynamics without complex computations, giving qualitative agreement with full theory and with experiment.

  • This paper presents a new method for measuring ocular torsion using the optical flow. Images of the iris were cropped and transformed into rectangular images that were orientation invariant. Feature points of the iris region were selected from a reference and a target image, and the shift of each feature was calculated using the iterative Lucas-Kanade method. The feature points were selected according to the strength of the corners on the iris image. The accuracy of the algorithm was tested using printed eye images. In these images, torsion was measured with $0.15^{\circ}$ precision. The proposed method shows robustness even with the gaze directional changes and pupillary reflex environment of real-time processing.

  • We have developed a microprogramir!able signal processor for real-time ultrasonic signal processing. Processing speed was increased by the parallelism in horizontal microprogram using 104bits microcode and the Pipelined architecture. Control unit of the signal processor was designed by microprogrammed architec- ture and writable control store (WCS) which was interfaced with host computer, APPLE- ll . This enables the processor to develop and simulate various digital signal processing algorithms. The performance of the processor was evaluated by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) program. The execution time to perform 16 bit 1024 points complex FF7, radix-2 DIT algorithm, was about 175 msec with IMHz master Clock. We can use this processor to Bevelop more efficient signal processing algorithms on the biological signal processing.

  • The cathode catalyst layer in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) was fabricated with anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template and its structure was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The SEM analysis showed that the catalyst layer was fabricated the Pt nanowire with uniform shape and size. The BET analysis showed that the volume of pores in range of 20-100 nm was enhanced by AAO template. The electrochemical properties with the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) were evaluated by current-voltage polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the MEA with AAO template reduced the mass transfer resistance and improved the cell performance by approximately 25% through controlling the structure of catalyst layer.

  • In this study, a comparative study is conducted on the synthesis methods for silica nanoparticle employing the silicon sludge waste generated from the semiconductor manufacturing processes. Specifically, acid-washed silicon sludge wastes with no impurities are employed as the precursors of sol-gel and hydrothermal methods for silica nanoparticles preparation. The morphologies and properties of silica nanoparticles synthesized via two synthetic methods are examined by various analysis methods. As a result, silica nanoparticles from the sol-gel method are fabricated with high purity and uniform shape, while the hydrothermal method exhibits advantages in yield and ease of synthetic process. This comparative study offers detailed experimental results on the two synthetic methods for silica nanoparticle synthesis, which may contribute to the establishment of manufacturing high-value materials using the by-products generated in the semiconductor process.

  • A brief general discussion of the nature and function of biosensors is presented. While the primary motivator for biosensor development has been the health-care industries, recent research efforts have spread to problems in agriculture and biological production systems. To illustrate some of the research from our laboratory, three example biosensors and their corresponding applications are presented. The first of these is an immunosensor for measurement of the hormone progesterone during milking as a method to improve reproductive management of dairy herds. The second example is an enzyme sensor for measurement of urea in milk as a menas to determine the efficiency of conversion of input protein to milk protein and, thus, improve nutritional management of dairy herds. The third example is a DNA sensor using polymerase chain reaction to detect pathogenic bacteria in the wash water of fresh and minimally processed fruits and vegetables. The potential for application of biosensors in agriculture, agrobiotechnology, food processing, and environmental monitoring has barely been realized.
