The combined SHARON (Single reactor system for High ammonium Removal Over Nitrite)-ANAMMOX (Anaerobic ammonium oxidation) reactor were operated in mesophilic condition ($35^{\circ}C$). In this study, microbial granulation and characteristics of SHARON and ANAMMOX sludges were investigated using settling test, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH). In SHARON reactor, Aerobic granulation with diameter of 1.5~2.5 mm was accomplished but aerobic granulation was weaker than anaerobic granular sludge. Initial seed sludge of ANAMMOX reactor was used as attached media for biofilm growth. ANAMMOX sludge was more compact and rounder rather than seed sludge. Though ANAMMOX sludge has high activity, it has lower settling ability than the seed granule. The color of ANAMMOX sludge was changed from dark to redish brown granular with diameter of 1~2 mm. In FISH of ANAMMOX sludge, high fraction of Candidatus B. stuttgartiensis which paid great role of nitrogen conversion was detected. Also, FISH results reveals that ANAMMOX bacteria inhabit at inner parts near surface, having advantages in utilization of substrates and protection from oxygen inhibition.
This research aims to remove nitrogen in the piggery wastewater by combined process with upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and biofilm process. For the effective denitrification. anaerobic and anoxic reactors were connected to a reactor. The effluent of aerobix reactor was recycled equally with influent in the upper filter of anaerobic reactor for denitrification and outlet of UBF reactor was connected to the settling tank with $1.5{\;}{\ell}$ capacity and the settling sludge was repeatedly recycled to UASB zone. The organic loading rate of total reactor was operated from 0.4 to $3.1kgCOD/m^{3}/d$ and it was observed that the removal rate of TCOD was 80 to 95 percentage. Ammonia nitrogen was removed over 90 percentage in the less volumetric loading rate than $0.1{\;}kgN/m^{3}/d$. But because of non-limitation of organic materials, it was reduced to 70 percentage in the more volumetric loading rate than $0.6{\;}kgN/m^{3}/d$. But denitrification rate was observed 100 percentage in the all of loading rate. This is caused by the maintenance of optimum temperature, sufficient carbon source, and competition of electron acceptors. The results of COD mass balance at the $1.21{\;}kgCOD/m^{3}/d$ was observed with the 71.7% percentage of influent COD. It was revealed that the most part of organic materials was removed in the aerobic and the anaerobic reactor because 38.4 percentage was conversed into $CH_{4}$ gas and 11 percentage was removed in the aerobic reactor with cell synthesis and metabolism. Besides, 5.7% organics was used to denitrification reaction and 3.7% organics related to sulfate reduction.
In the wastewater treatment experiment by anaerobic-aerobic packed bed unit, it was found that the high and stable removal efficiency of nitrogen could be obtained. The extent of nitrogen removal gradually decreased with the rise of recycle ratio and DO concentration. On the other hand, the extent of phosphorus increased with the increase of DO concentration. COD showed high removal efficiency over the entire range tested. The simulation of T-N behavior was carried out satisfactorily by using the kinetic equations for biofilm and the reactor model which considered the packed bed as a plug flow reactor.
This research aims to find granulation and organic removal of the piggery wastewater with the upflow blanket filter(UBF) reactor. UASB process had the effect of high pH on the granulation phase. But teh effect was decreased after the granule formation. The filter zone of the UBF reactor had the function of GSS and contributed to removing the organic because of its biofilm formation. The removal rates of total COD and soluble COD were 70% ~ 80% and 60 ~ 80% at an influent organic loading range of $2{\sim}17.4kgCOD/m^3{\cdot}d$, respectively. The methane production rate with the organic removal was $0.21{\sim}0.34{\ell}CH_4/gCOD_{rem}$ and the maximum methan production rate was $0.34CH_4{\ell}/gCOD_{rem}$ at the volumetric loading $5kgCOD/m^3{\cdot}d$.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of a toothbrush with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on periodontitis-associated dental biofilm attached to a zirconia surface by static and dynamic methods. Materials and Methods: Zirconia disks (12 mm diameter, 2.5 mm thickness) were inserted into a 24-well plate (static method) or inside a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) biofilm reactor (dynamic method) to form dental biofilms using Streptococcus gordonii and Fusobacterium nucleatum. The disks with biofilm were subdivided into five treatment groups-control, commercial photodynamic therapy (PDT), toothbrush alone (B), brush with LED (BL), and brush with LED+erythrosine (BLE). After treatment, the disks were agitated to detach the bacteria, and the resulting solutions were spread directly on selective agar. The number of viable bacteria and percentage of bacterial reduction were determined from colony counts. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to visualize alterations in bacterial morphology. Results: No significant difference in biofilm formation was observed between dynamic and static methods. A significant difference was observed in the number of viable bacteria between the control and all experimental groups (P < 0.05). The percentage of bacterial reduction in the BLE group was significantly higher than in the other treated groups (P < 0.05). SEM revealed damaged bacterial cell walls in the PDT, BL, and BLE groups, but intact cell walls in the control and B groups. Conclusion: The findings suggest that an LED toothbrush with erythrosine is more effective than other treatments in reducing the viability of periodontitis-associated bacteria attached to zirconia in vitro.
Biofilm formed on stainless and copper in water treatment plant was investigated for sixteen weeks. Biofilm reactor was specially designed for this study. It was similar to that of a real distribution pipe. Raw water, coagulated, settled, filtered and treated water were used in this study. The average number of heterotrophic bacteria counts was $1.6{\times}10^4CFU/ml$, $5.8{\times}10^3CFU/ml$, $1.8{\times}10^3CFU/ml$, $1.3{\times}10^2CFU/ml$, 1 CFU/ml, respectively. Density of biofilm bacteria formed on stainless and copper pipes in raw, coagulated and settled water increased above $2.9{\times}10^3CFU/cm^2$ within second weeks while more biofilm bacteria counts were found on the stainless pipe than on the copper pipe. In case of filtered water (free residue chlorine 0.44 mg/L), there was no significant difference in the number of biofilm bacteria on both pipes and biofilm bacteria below $18CFU/cm^2$ were detected on both pipe materials after fifth weeks. Biofilm bacteria were not detected on both pipe materials in treated water (free residue chlorine 0.88 mg/L). According to the results of DGGE analysis, Sphingomonadacae was a dominant species of biofilm bacteria formed on the stainless pipe while the copper pipe had Bradyrhizobiaceae and Sphingomonadaceae as dominant bands. In case of filtered water, a few bands (similar to Propionibacterium sp., Sphingomonas sp., Escherichia sp., and etc.) that have 16S rRNA sequences were detected in biofilm bacteria formed on both pipes after fifth weeks. Stainless pipe had higher species richness and diversity than the copper pipe.
Trichlooethylene (TCE) has become a widespread contaminant in air, soil, and underground water due to extensive industrial used and improper disposals. Since TCE is a suspected carcinogen and constitutes public health concerns, many treatment systems have been investigated to remove this hazardous waste. One of the most premising reactor systems for the treatment of TCE is trickling biofilter (TBF), in which monooxygenase (MO), the corresponding enzyme for initiating primary substrate oxidation, fortuitously degrades TCE via cometabolism. TCE, however, is not easily treated by simple TBF. This is mainly due to the toxicities of TCE and its degradation products to microbial film in TBF. In this paper, recent progresses on the development of bioreactor system for the treatment of TCE, especially gas-phase TCE, are reviewed. The potentials of novel biofilm reactor systems were also discussed for the long-term continuous treatment of TCE.
This study used biofilm process, which needs simple operation, maintenance and smaller facility area than conventional activated sludge process with the small plant operation, in the treatment of increasing sewage with the rapid industrial growth. The reactor used in this study consists of one anaerobic and one aerobic chamber filled with waste ceramic and waste vinyl as media and the treated sewage was from restaurant source. The experiment was scaled up from lab. to pilot scale and lasted for about 100 days. We focused on the removal efficiency of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus with constant HRT and continuous aeration. The removal efficiency of $BOD_5$ and SS were 94.33% and 87.77% respectively, which was a satisfaction level. However the removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ was 81.46% somewhat below the desired level of 90%, and that of T-N and T-P showed 71.92% and 21.10% respectively, that was below the expected value. The removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ and T-N in the pilot scale was about 10% low compared with the lab.-scale.
This work experimentally determined the effect of operating parameters such as temperature and solid retention time (SRT) on the phosphorus removal of municipal wastewater with waste-tire media. The experiments were carried out in pilot-scale moving bed biofilm reactor filled at a 0.15 filling ratio with the media. Total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiency was $91{\pm}5$, $75{\pm}16$, and $59{\pm}14%$ at the temperature of 9~10, 10~20, and $20{\sim}26^{\circ}C$, respectively. TP removal efficiency was $71{\pm}17$, $74{\pm}16$, $74{\pm}16$, and $68{\pm}18%$ at the SRT of 3.5~5, 5~10, 10~15, and 15~20 days, respectively. At the nitrate concentration of 1~3, 3~6, and 6~9 mg/L, TP removal efficiency was $82{\pm}9$, $68{\pm}18$, $47{\pm}7%$, respectively. The concentration of total phosphorus in the effluent was $0.1{\sim}1.8(0.8{\pm}0.4)mg/L$ regardless of operating conditions, which meets Korean phosphorus limit value, 2 mg/L, for discharge into receiving waters.
Biofilm process is preferred to activated sludge process in small domestic wastewater treatment plant because of its simplicity in operation and maintenance. Column reactor filled with waste ceramics and with waste plastics was used to remove pollutants in restaurant wastewater. COD removal at 18 hours of hydraulic retention time (HRT) gave 93.7%, COD removal during the experimental period, where maximum COD removal was observed. Under same condition, average removal of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 82.3% and 25.9%, respectively Organic and nitrogen were efficiently removed with the HRT of 18 hours or more.
