  • A new bioelectric impedance measurement method is proposed for the precise measurement of the bioelectric impedance. To obtain the impedance from the known applied a.c. current and the measured voltage signals, a frequency conversion circuit, like the mixer in heterodyne receivers, is introduced to reduce the frequency of the original current. It can be observed from several lines of derivation that the impedance is independent on the amplitude and phase of the mixing signals. This makes it possible to use low-speed analog-to-digital converters and thus utilize cheaper electronic parts in the implementation. The possibility of the method is shown by simulations, and a generic structure applicable to bioelectric impedance measurement devices is also proposed.

  • Biofouling initiated by biofilm (slime) formation is a key challenge for practical ocean engineering and construction. This study evaluated a new anti-biofilm technology using bioelectricity. The anti-microfouling electrical technology is based on the principles of the bioelectric effect, known as the application of an electrostatic force for biofilm removal. Previously, the electricity was optimized below 0.82V to avoid electrolysis, which can prevent the production of biocides. A test boat comprised of microelectronics for electrical signal generation with electrodes for an anti-biofouling effect was developed. The tests were conducted in the West Sea of Korea (Wangsan Marina, Incheon) for three weeks. The surface biofouling was quantified. A significant reduction of fouling was observed under the bioelectric effect conditions, with approximately 30% enhanced prevention of fouling progress (P<0.05). This technology can be an alternative eco-friendly technique for anti-microfouling that can be applied for canals, vessels, and coastal infrastructure because it does not induce electrolysis.

  • Objectives: The objectives of this study is the examination of physiology of the obesity by automatic bioelectric response recorder. Methods: The 86 patients below BMI 20 and the 144 patients over BMI 25 were objectives. They visited Dongguk University Kangnam oriental medical hospital from 2000. April 1 to 2001 August 30. Results :The patients below BMI 20 were accelerated a parasympathetic nerve and were decelerated a sympathetic nerve, so they loosened the tension, lacked the resistance and were oversensitive. The patients over BMI 25 were accelerated a sympathetic nerve and were decelerated a parasympathetic nerve, so they maintained the tension and the resistance.

  • Purpose : To research the Skin Resistance Variability(SRV) of premature ovarian failure(POF) patients by Autonomic Bioelectric Response Recorder(ABR-2000 system, Meridian, Korea) and report the specific results in SRV of POF patients. Methods : We measured SRV of 17 POF Patients who came to Conmaul Oriental Medical Hospital during August 2005 ${\sim}$ July 2006 by ABR-2000 system. We analyzed the results which height of graph Part was converted into 0${\sim}$10, and the readings of Low/Normal/High. Results : The mean value of graph height on each(1, 2, 3) part is lower than normal range(4-6) in POF patients. The distribution ratio of Low/Normal/High on each(1, 2, 3) part shows that there are much more Low proportion in POF patients. Conclusion : The low graph height of POF patients on 1, 2, 3 part means that conductivity & capacitance of POF patients is low, especially on head.

  • In this paper, we implement a portable bioelectric signal measurement system for the safety of industrial workers. The developed system consists of two parts: the one is boielectric signal measurement unit and the other is signal analyzer system with PDA. The former includes signal processing part, A/D convertor, and 8051 based microprocessor, the latter includes software for signal analysis and display. The developed system detects industrial worker's ECG and displays and stores it to PDA. The ECG data in PDA can be transmitted to PC located in a distance, allowing a doctor to review the ECG and make a treatment decision. A doctor analyzes the ECG data and gives medical treatment to industrial worker.

  • The biologic potential, which is different from the piezoelectric signals, relates tooth movement at least in part to changes in bone metaboliosm in bioelectric theory. The purpose of this experiment was to determine wheather the application of half sine-wave pulsed electromagnetic fields (HSPEMF) could increase both the rate and amount of orthodontic tooth movement. Forty-three male Hartley guinea pigs, weighting approximately 255g, were utilized in this study. The animals were 35 days old at the start of the study. Laterally directed orthodontic force was applied to the maxillary central incisors of 40 Hartley guinea pigs (20 experimental, 20 control). According to the amount of orthodontic force (6g, 12g), they were divided into two sub-groups (10 experimental I, 10 experimental II, 10 control I, 10 control II). During the experimental period, experimental animals were placed in plastic animal holders with their heads positioned in an area of uniform electromagnetic field. Control animals were placed in similar plastic holders that did not carry the electric apparatus. The results were as follows : 1. The application of a HSPEMF to the experimental groups significantly increase the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement observed over a 10-day experimental period. 2. The application of a HSPEMF to the experimental groups significantly increase the velocity of orthodontic tooth movement observed over a 10-day experimental period. 3. There was no significant difference in the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement at the fourth day to the eighth day, but there was significant difference in the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement at the nineth, tenth day during a 10-day experimental period. 4. After 10 days of HSPEMF exposure & orthodontic force, the experimental groups demonstrated more osteodasts in the pressure side than control groups.
