A bio-optical model was developed specific for turbid and shallow waters. Special studies were carried out to estimate absorption and scattering properties as well as backscattering probability of suspended matter. The inversion of bio-optical model allows for direct retrieval of turbidity and chlorophyll- a from the visible-near infrared (VNIR) range sensor. Time-series satellite imagery from ASTER AM-1 sensor, were used to monitor the Laguna de Bay water quality condition. Spatial distribution of temperature for the lake was extracted from the thermal infrared (TIR) sensor. Corresponding field surveys were conducted to parameterize the bio -optical model. In-situ measurements include suspended particle and chlorophyll-a concentrations profiles from nephelometric devices and processing of water samples. Hyperspectral measurements were used to validate results of the bio -optical model and satellite- based estimation. This study provides a theoretical basis and a practical illustration of applying space- based measurements on an operational basis.
We report a method for optical monitoring of tumors in an animal model using optical coherence tomography (OCT). In a spectral domain OCT system, a superluminescent diode light source with a full width of 66 nm at half maximum and peak wavelength of 950 nm was used to take images having an axial resolution of 6.8 ${\mu}m$. Cancer cells of PC-3 were cultured and inoculated into the hypodermis of auricle tissues in BALB/c nude mice. We observed tumor formation and growth at the injection region of cancer cells in vivo and obtained the images of tumor mass center and sparse circumferences. On the $5^{th}$ day from an inoculation of cancer cells, histological images of the tumor region using cross-sectional slicing and dye staining of specimens were taken in order to confirm the correlation with the high resolution OCT images. The OCT image of tumor mass compared with normal tissues was analyzed using its A-scan data so as to obtain a tissue attenuation rate which increases according to tumor growth.

There have been many homing navigation algorithms for robotic system. In this paper, we suggest a bio-inspired navigation model. It builds path integration based on optical flow. We consider two factors on robot movements, translational movement and rotational movement. For each movement, we found distinguishable optical flows. Based on optical flow, we estimate ego-centric robot movement and integrate the path optimally. We can determine the homing direction and distance. We test this algorithm and evaluate the performance of homing navigation for robotic system.

We model lattice-mismatched group III-V semiconductor $In_{x}Ga_{1-x}$ alloys with the three-parameter anharmonic Kirkwood-Keating potential, which includes realistic distortion effect by introducing anharmonicity. Although the potential parameters were determined based on optical properties of the binary parent alloys InAs and GaAs, simulated dielectric functions, reflectance, and Raman spectra of alloys agree excellently with experimental data for any arbitrary atomic composition. For a wide range of atomic composition, InAs- and GaAs-bond retain their respective properties of binary parent crystals despite lattice and charge mismatch. It implies that use of the anharmonic Kirkwood-Keating potential may provide an optimal model system to investigate diverse and unique optical properties of quantum dot heterostructures by circumventing potential parameter searches for particular local structures.

The development of midinfrared (mid-IR) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) has enabled rapid high-contrast measurement of the mid-IR spectra of biological tissues. Several studies have compared the differences between the mid-IR spectra of colon cancer and noncancerous colon tissues. Most mid-IR spectrum classification studies have been proposed as machine-learning-based algorithms, but this results in deviations depending on the initial data and threshold values. We aim to develop a process for classifying colon cancer and noncancerous colon tissues through a deep-learning-based convolutional-neural-network (CNN) model. First, we image the midinfrared spectrum for the CNN model, an image-based deep-learning (DL) algorithm. Then, it is trained with the CNN algorithm and the classification ratio is evaluated using the test data. When the tissue microarray (TMA) and routine pathological slide are tested, the ML-based support-vector-machine (SVM) model produces biased results, whereas we confirm that the CNN model classifies colon cancer and noncancerous colon tissues. These results demonstrate that the CNN model using midinfrared-spectrum images is effective at classifying colon cancer tissue and noncancerous colon tissue, and not only submillimeter-sized TMA but also routine colon cancer tissue samples a few tens of millimeters in size.

Monte Carlo simulations were performed for a three-dimensional tissue model with and without an embedded large vessel, to understand how varying vessel geometry affects surface light distribution. Vessel radius was varied from 1 to 5 mm, and vessel depth from 2 to 10 mm. A larger difference in surface fluence rate was observed when the vessel's radius increased. For vessel depth, the largest difference was seen at a depth of approximately 4 mm, corresponding to human wrist region. When the vessel was placed at depths greater than 8 mm, very little difference was observed. We also tested the feasibility of using two source-detector pairs, comprising two detectors distinctly spaced from a common source, to noninvasively measure blood-scattering changes in a large vessel. High sensitivity to blood-scattering changes was achieved by placing the near detector closer to the source and moving the far detector away from the source. However, at longer distances, increasing noise levels limited the sensitivity of the two-detector approach. Our results indicate that the approach using two source-detector pairs may have potential for quantitative measurement of scattering changes in the blood while targeting large vessels near the human wrist region.
In this study, we tried to find out the most appropriate pre-processing method and to verify the feasibility of developing a low-price sensing system for predicting the hardy kiwis sugar content based on VNIRS and subsequent spectral analysis. A total of 495 hardy kiwi samples were collected from three farms in Muju, Jeollabukdo, South Korea. The samples were scanned with a spectrophotometer in the range of 730-2300 nm with 1 nm spectral sampling interval. The measured data were arbitrarily separated into calibration and validation data for sugar content prediction. Partial least squares (PLS) regression was performed using various combinations of pre-processing methods. When the latent variable (LV) was 8 with the pre-processing combination of standard normal variate (SNV) and orthogonal signal correction (OSC), the highest R2 values of calibration and validation were 0.78 and 0.84, respectively. The possibility of predicting the sugar content of hardy kiwi was also examined at spectral sampling intervals of 6 and 10 nm in the narrower spectral range from 730 nm to 1200 nm for a low-price optical sensing system. The prediction performance had promising results with R2 values of 0.84 and 0.80 for 6 and 10 nm, respectively. Future studies will aim to develop a low-price optical sensing system with a combination of optical components such as photodiodes, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and/or lamps, and to locate a more reliable prediction model by including meteorological data, soil data, and different varieties of hardy kiwi plants.

An analytical model based on a modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) is developed to investigate the optical transmission through metal gratings. This model gives well physical meanings for the transmission as well as for the dispersion relations of the modes responsible for high transmission. These concepts provide accurate information even for real metals used in the visible~near-infrared wavelength range, where surface plasmon polaritons (SPP's) are excited. Furthermore, the dispersion relations allow the nature of the propagation modes to be assessed. The propagation modes are hybrid between Fabry-Pérot like modes and SPP's. It is important to consider different period and aspect ratio of metal gratings in order to determine the nature of the hybrid modes. In this paper, the sensing characteristics and mode propagation phenomena of high-performance plasma bio-sensors that depend on these variables were clearly analyzed.
The diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance $(K_d({\lambda}))$ is an important parameter for ocean studies. Based on the optical profile data measured during three cruises in the northern South China Sea in autumn from 2003 to 2005, variations in the $K_d({\lambda})spectra$ were analyzed. The variability of $K_d({\lambda})$ shows much distinct features both in magnitude and spectra shape. The $K_d({\lambda})value$ are much higher in costal waters than that of open oceanic waters and the blue-to-green(443/555) ratios of $K_d({\lambda})$ tends to increases with the chlorophyll a concentration ([Chl a]) from open ocean to coastal waters. These characteristics can be explained primarily by the increasing of $a_{w+p}(433)/a_{w+p}(555)$ with [Chl a]. In the short waveband, the relation between $K_d({\lambda})-K_w({\lambda})$ and [Chl a] can be well described by a power law function, suggesting the large contribution of phytoplankton to the variations in $K_d({\lambda})$. As for the spectral model of the diffuse attenuation coefficient, there are good linear relationships between $K_d(490)$ and $K_d({\lambda})$ at other wavelengths, with the slope parameter and the intercept following linear functions within the spectral range $412{\sim}555$ nm. These variabilities of $K_d({\lambda})$ provided much useful information for us to study the bio-optical properties in the northern South China Sea.

In this study, graphene, the most attractive material today, has been applied to the wavelength-modulated surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. The optical fiber sensor technology is the most fascinating topic because of its several benefits. In addition to this, the SPR phenomenon enables the detection of biomaterials to be label-free, highly sensitive, and accurate. Therefore, the optical fiber SPR sensor has powerful advantages to detect biomaterials. Meanwhile, Graphene shows superior mechanical, electrical, and optical characteristics, so that it has tremendous potential to be applied to any applications. Especially, grapheme has tighter confinement plasmon and relatively long propagation distances, so that it can enhance the light-matter interactions (F. H. L. Koppens, et al., Nano Lett., 2011). Accordingly, we coated graphene on the optical fiber probe which we fabricated to compose the wavelength-modulated SPR sensor (Figure 1.). The graphene film was synthesized via thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Synthesized graphene was transferred on the core exposed region of fiber optic by lift-off method. Detected analytes were biotinylated double cross-over DNA structure (DXB) and Streptavidin (SA) as the ligand-receptor binding model. The preliminary results showed the SPR signal shifts for the DXB and SA binding rather than the concentration change.
