In the first part of this study, a numerical simulation model was developed using the mechanical APDL software to validate the results of the 3D-elastisity theory on the laminated sandwich plate developed by Panago. The numerical simulation model showed a good agreement to the results of Pagano's theory in terms of deflection, normal stresses, and shear stresses. In the second part of this study, the developed numerical simulation model was used to define different plates dimensions and fibers layup orientations to examine the load response in terms of deflection and stresses. Further analysis was implemented on the natural frequencies of laminated xxx plates of the plates. The layup configurations include Unidirectional (UD), Cross-Ply (CP), Quasi-Isotropic (QI), the linear bio-inspired known as Linear-Helicoidal (LH), and the nonlinear bio-inspired known as Fibonacci-Helicoidal (FH). The following numerical simulation model can be used for the design and study of novel, sophisticated bio-inspired composite structures in a variety of configurations subjected to sinusoidal or constant loads.
Increasing interest of human health, building bio-database (Bio DB) has been become a hot issue in life science. Consequently, Single Cell Analysis (SCA) which can explain biodiversity of lives has been a significant factor for building Bio DB. In numerous studies from these analyses, they have been showed that mechanical properties of cells can serve explanation of biological heterogeneity and criterion of disease states. Therefore, measuring mechanical properties of cells have great potential to be used in bio-medical applications. However, traditionally, many researchers have undergone difficult and time consuming work because handling small sized cells usually requires high-skilled technique. Thus, this paper shows robotized stiffness measurement technique using fixed ended beam sensor, precision motorized stage and substrate which have wall structure.
Dynamic analysis of nano/micro bio-sensors based on a multiscale atomistic/continuum theory is introduced. We use a generalized atomistic finite element method (GAFEM) to analyze a bio-sensor which has $3{\times}N_a{\times}N_p$ degrees of freedom, where $N_p$ is the number of representative unit cells and $N_a$ is the number of atoms per unit cell. The stiffness matrix is derived from interatomic potential between pairs of atoms. This work contains two studies: (1) the resonance analysis of nano bio-sensors with different amount of target analyte and (2) the dependence of resonance frequency on finite element mesh. We also examine the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition based on the highest resonance frequency. The CFL condition is the criterion for the time step used in the dynamic analysis by GAFEM. Our studies can be utilized to predict the performance of micro/nano bio-sensors from atomistic perspective.
Blood pump analysis process includes both mechanical and bio-mechanical aspects. Since a blood pump is a mechanical device, it has to be mechanically efficient. On the other hand, blood pumps function is sensitively related to the blood recirculation; hence, bio-factors such as hemolysis and thrombosis become important. This paper numerically investigates the mechanical and bio-mechanical performances of the Rotaflow in the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO), Ventricular Assist Device(VAD), and full-load conditions. The operational conditions are defined as(400[mmHg], 5[L/min.]), (100[mmHg], 3[L/min.]), and (600[mmHg], 10[L/min.]) for ECMO, VAD, and full-load conditions, respectively. The results are presented and analyzed from the mechanical aspect via performance curves, and from bio-mechanical aspect via focusing on hemolytic characteristics. Regions of top and bottom cavities show recirculation in both ECMO and VAD condtions. In addition, Eulerian-based calculation of modified index of hemolysis(MIH) has been investigated. The results demonstrate that the VAD condition has the least risk of hemolysis among the others, while the full-load condition has the highest risk.
This paper presents the design of a passive biped walking robot based on limit cycle analysis. By using numerical analysis and experiment, we identify better design criterion for biped walking robot. In designing robot parameters we apply global search method to find limit cycles for given robot parameters and ground angle. Internal parameter variation changes limit cycle behavior, total energy, strides, etc and the characteristics of walking is analyzed by simulation and experiments.
This paper proposes a hydrogen-based social economy derived from fuel cells capable of replacing fossil fuels and resolving global warming, It thus provides an entry for developing economically feasible social configurations to make use of bio-hydrogen production systems. Bio-hydrogen production works from the principle that microorganisms decompose water in the process of converting CO to $CO_2$, thereby producing hydrogen. This study parts from an analysis of an existing 157-ton class NA1 bio-hydrogen reactor that identifies the state of feedstock and reactor conditions. Based on this analysis, we designed a 1-ton class bio-hydrogen reactor process simulator. We carried out thermal analyses of biological heat reactions, sensible heat, and heat radiation in order to calculate the thermal load of each system element. The reactor temperature changes were determined by modeling the feed mixing tank capacity, heat exchange, and heat storage tank. An analysis was carried out to confirm the condition of the feed mixing tank, heat exchanger, heat storage tank capacity as well as the operating conditions of the system so as to maintain the target reactor temperature.
In this paper, mechanical behaviors of developed pedicle screw system, made of bio-mechanical materials(Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5), ale predicted using FEM analysis. As a first step, morphologic construction of normal Korean spines and surgical operation convenience are considered to design optimum pedicle screw system. In this step, various design variables are considered as design parameters to develop optimized models. As a next step, tension and bending tests are performed to improve the structural performance of the developed system using finite element method. In this step, required Static compression and bending test specifications by ASTM F-04 25 04 01 are applied to understand the bio-mechanical behaviors of the designed spinal implant system under various load types. As the results of this research, it is possible to develop efficient pedicle screw system, having enough rigidity and fixation to stand any spinal damage under allowable stress conditions.
A microcantilever is a well-known MEMS structure for sensing bio-chemical molecules. When bio-chemical molecules are adsorbed on the microcantilever's surface, resonance frequency shift is generated. There are two issues in this phenomena. The first one is which one between mass change and surface stress change effects is more dominant on the resonance frequency shift. The second one is what will be the performance change when the boundary condition is changed from cantilevers to double clamped beams. We have studied the effect of surface stress change and compared it with that of mass change by using FEM analysis. Furthermore, for microstructures having different boundary conditions, we have studied Q-factor, which determines the detection limit of micro/nano mechanical sensors.
Recently, an air-lift bio-reactor operated by micro bubbles has been utilized to product hydrogen fuel. To enhance the performance, characteristics of hydrodynamics inside the bio-reactor were analyzed using a numerical simulation for two-phase flow. An Eulerian model was employed for both of liquid and gas phases. The standard k-ε model was used for turbulence induced by micro bubbles. A Population Balance Model was employed to consider size distribution of bubbles. A hollow cylinder was introduced at the center of the reactor to reduce a dead area which disturbs circulation of CO bubbles. An appropriate diameter of the draft tube and hollow cylinder were optimized for better performance of the bio-reactor. The optimum model could be obtained when the cross-sectional area ratio of the hollow cylinder to the reactor, and the width ratio of the riser to the downcomer approached 0.4 and 3.5, respectively. Consequently, it is expected that the optimum model could enhance the performance of the bio-reactor with the homogeneous distribution and higher density of CO, and more effective mixing.
Earth is facing a serious problem of pollution and scarcity of energy sources. The synthetic fibers used in automobile and Aerospace manufacturing sectors are non-renewable and harmful to environment. International Agency such as FAA and SAE is forcing for green fuel, green materials and structures. Further exploration is much needed to understand its potential in structural applications. In the current study, hemp and Jute fibre based composites were developed and tested for assessing their suitability for possible applications in automobile and aerospace sectors. Composites were undergone tensile test, water absorption test, and fatigue analysis to understand its behavior under various loading conditions. The finite element analysis has been carried out to understand the fatigue behaviour of composites. The results revealed that the usage of hemp and jute fibre reinforced composites can improve mechanical properties and have shown a viable alternative to replace synthetic fibres such as glass fibres for specific applications. Hemp reinforced bio-composites have shown better performance as compared to Jute reinforced bio-composites while water resistance characteristics for hemp is poorer to jute fibres.
