  • In this study, we investigated the effects of the eco-friendly chemical bio-sulfur, on the citrus melanose-causing pathogen, Diaporthe citri, and on the pest, Panonychus citri. In an open field experiment with a plot-scale application of the chemicals: Mancozeb, lime sulfur, lime sulfur + machine oil, and bio-sulfur, the control group showed 70.6% disease severity compared with 10.3% for the Mancozeb-treated group. Among the eco-friendly treatments, disease severity was the lowest for the group treated with lime sulfur + machine oil (32.2%) and was 53.9%, 58.8%, and 58.1% following treatment with lime sulfur, and bio-sulfur diluted 500 and 1000 times, respectively. The proportion of diseased fruit showed similar results, suggesting that bio-sulfur is an effective alternative to lime sulfur. Three days after treatment acaricidal effects on P. citri showed a 197.6% control survival rate whereas the machine oil, and bio-sulfur diluted 500 and 1000 times treatments showed rates of 2.9%, 5.8%, and 9.0%, respectively. After three days, the control value for bio-sulfur diluted 1000 times was 73.2% compared with the values for the machine oil (96.4%) and bio-sulfur diluted 500 times (94.6%) treatments. Therefore, we suggest that additional research is needed on the combined application of bio-sulfur and oils to enhance the additive control effect on citrus melanose and Panonychus citri.

  • Purpose of this study was a development of a sprayer arm auto control system that could be operated according to distance from pear trees for automation of pest control. Auto control system included two parts, hardware and software. First, controller was made with an MCU and relay switches. Two types of ultra-sonic sensors were installed to measure distance from pear trees: one on/off type that detect up to 3 m, and the other continuous type providing 0~5 V output corresponding to distance of 0~3 m. Second, an auto control algorithm was developed to control. Each spraying arm was controlled according to the sensor-based distance from the pear trees. And it could dodge obstacles to protect itself. Max and min signal values were eliminated, when five sensor signals was collected, and then signals were averaged to reduce sensor's noises. According to results of field experiment, auto control test result was better than non auto control test result. Spraying rates were 69.25% (left line) and 98.09% (right line) under non auto control mode, because pear trees were not planted uniformly. But, auto control test's results were 92.66% (left line) and 94.64% (right line). Spraying rate was increased by maintaining distance from tree.

  • Conventional treatment techniques cannot meet the stringent modern water quality regulations emanating from the need to provide high quality drinking water. Therefore, a number of studies have suggested low pressure membrane filtration as a worthwhile alternative. However, a major constraint to the extensive use of this technology in low and middle income countries is the high operating and maintenance costs caused by the inherent predisposition to membrane fouling. Notwithstanding, pretreatment of feed water using techniques such as coagulation, adsorption, oxidation and bio-filtration is believed to control fouling. In this review paper, the existing scientific knowledge on membrane fouling and pretreatment techniques for controlling fouling in low pressure membranes is analyzed with the aim of providing new and valuable insights into such techniques, as well as unveiling crucial issues noteworthy for further studies. Among the techniques reviewed, coagulation was observed to be the most cost-effective and will remain the most dominant in the coming years. Although oxidants and magnetic ion exchange resins can also control fouling, the propensity of oxidants to form health treating precursors and the high economic implications of magnetic ion exchange resins will hinder their adoption in developing countries.

  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the visual bio-feedback training for 5 weeks on balance and postural control for patients with stroke. Methods : The 26 subjects were randomly selected from the patients of the E hospital in the S city who met the study conditions. They were divided into a visual bio-feedback training group of 13 patients and a self-resistance exercise group of 13 patients. The visual bio-feedback training group received visual bio-feedback and general physiotherapy for five weeks and the self-resistance exercise group received cycling and general physiotherapy for the same period. The subjects were measured and compared for stability index, weight distribution index, fall down index, functional reach test and timed up and go test before and after the program. Results : The visual bio-feedback training group showed significant changes after the experiment in stability index, weight distribution index, functional reach test and timed up and go test(p<0.05), and the self-resistance exercise group also showed significant differences(p<0.05). The changes between prior to and after the experiment show that the visual bio-feedback training group had more significant effects than the self-resistance exercise group(p<0.05). Conclusions : The visual bio-feedback training for five weeks had effects in the improvement of the balance and posture control of stroke patients. Based on these results, more effective training programs should be developed and propagated.

  • The effect of bio-logger tagging location on blood characteristics and bio-logger attachment efficiency in spotted sea bass (mean body weight 2356.7 g) was investigated. The fish were tagged at four different tagging locations: no-tag (control), operculum attachment (OA), dorsal muscle attachment (DA), and cauda peduncle muscle attachment (CA). The blood properties and bio-logger attachment efficiencies were examined on days 1, 7, 14, and 35 after tagging the bio-logger at each tagging location. During the experimental periods, the concentrations of hematocrit and hemoglobin in whole blood, and GOT (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase), GPT (glutamic pyruvic transaminase), total protein (TP), glucose, total cholesterol, cortisol, and superoxide dismutase in plasma were not affected by the attachment location of the bio-logger, however, the TP concentration was significantly lower in OA than in the control group on day 7. After tagging for 35 days, the efficiencies of bio-logger attachment in the OA, DA, and CA after tagging for 35 days were 33.3%, 100.0%, and 33.3%, respectively. These results indicate that, in our experimental condition, the most appropriate bio-logger attachment location is DA, providing basic information on bio-logger utilization methods for ecological and biological biotelemetry surveys of the spotted sea bass.
