Dewaterability, one of the important properties of wastewater sludge, was investigated using a simple capillary suction time (CST) measurement method. CST and SRF have a very close co-relation. It was convinced that CST method was quite effective, and compensating the time-consuming SRF of conventional drainage measuring method. It turned out that one could use the results of CST to find optimum flocculants ratio to improve drainage in wastewater treatment for the tissue paper production at a mill. Since the optimum ratio of flocculants could be determined with the value of CST and COD removal efficiency could be improved with precise ratio of flocculants. Thus, using CST for determining the optimum ratio of flocculants could be economical by reducing the amount of flocculants. Dewaterability might be measured within several seconds using the values of CST in a precise way. The dewaterability could also be useful in investigating the optimum ratio of flocculants.
The objective of this paper was to investigate the effect of dextran gel on preparation of nano-liposomes loaded with ginkgolide. During preparation, Sephadex G75, G50 and G25 were added in the aqueous phase respectively. From the experiment, nano-liposomes prepared by dextran gels were found spherical and smooth. The result indicated that aperture of dextran gels were narrower, particle size of nano-liposomes was smaller (207.13 ~ 89.16 nm) and zeta potential was greater (-36.2 ~ -29.5 mV) in more negative. The study also revealed that differences of the entrapment efficiency and drug loading among the three types of nano-liposomes were not significant. In vitro drug release test demonstrated that nano-liposomes had a better controlled release. To conclude, by using dextran gel in the preparation of nano-liposome loaded with ginkgolide, the particle size could be effectively controlled and the drug stability could be improved.
Cryopreservation of mouse embryos and spermatozoa has become the foremost technique for preserving large numbers of different strains of mice with induced mutations. In 1998, our mouse bank was established in the Center for Animal Resources and Development (CARD), Institute of Resource Development and Analysis, Kumamoto University, Japan, based on the Preservation, supply and development of genetically engineered animals report published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. We cryopreserve mouse embryos and sperm, supply these resources, organize training courses to educate people and form part of a domestic and international network of both mutagenesis and resource centers. We currently have over 1,500 mouse strains, 842,000 frozen embryos and 26,000 straws containing frozen sperm. Moreover, we disclose information about 1,300 deposited strains. Furthermore, over 400 strains of frozen embryos or mice produced from frozen embryos and sperm are being supplied to the requesters both domestically and internationally. Additionally we hold training courses on the cryopreservation of mouse germplasm 2~3 times a year, both domestically and internationally. In the course, we teach basic reproductive engineering techniques to trainees on a man-to-man basis. We have already held 28 training courses on the cryopreservation of mouse germplasm at our center and at other institutes.
The purposes of this study were to determine health consciousness and eating habits of dining business owners from Seongnam city. To figure out their health levels, this study focused on quality of sleep, current state of health, health care, smoking, drinking, regular exercise, working hours, dietary behavior pattern, dietary habits, and food intakes patterns. Out of 200 subjects, 104 (52.0%) were males and 96 (48.0%) were females. Their average age was 46.60. For education level, a majority of males graduated from college, whereas a majority of females graduated from high school. Average combined ratios of overweight and obese were 62.5% for males and 25% for females. A majority worked less than 3 years in the dining business area, but 37% of subjects worked more than 10 years. Average health level was favorable, but 38.9% of subjects had hypertension. Males' percentages for smoking and drinking were higher than those of females. Regular physical activity was high, but regular exercise rate was low. Males' average eating speed was faster than that of females and had low scores for desirable eating habits. The study shows that local business owners need to take care of their health.

Materials that can be used for 3D printing have been developed in terms of phase and functionality. Materials should also be easily printed with high accuracy. In recent years, the concept of 4D printing has been extended to materials whose physical properties such as shape or volume can change depending on the environment. Typically, such high-performance 3D printing materials include bio-inks and inks for sensors. This study deals with the optimization of the manufacturing method to improve the functional properties of the pressure sensitive material, which can be used as a sensor based on change of the resistance according to the pressure. Specifically, the number of milling for dispersion, the ratio of hardener for controlling elasticity, and the content of MWCNTs were optimized. As a result, a method of manufacturing a highly sensitive pressure-sensitive ink capable of use in 3D printing was introduced.
For the collection of indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, 35 strains within the class Actinobacteria were isolated from various environmental samples (animals and clinical specimens) in 2017. Each strain showed high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.8%) and formed a robust clade with recognized actinobacterial species. The isolates were assigned to 35 species, 22 genera, 15 families, and 8 orders of the class Actinobacteria. There are no official descriptions of these 35 bacterial species in Korea. Morphological properties, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and strain IDs are included in the species descriptions.

The primary objective of this study was to analyze the delivery ratio using Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran (HSPF) in Okdong-cheon watershed. Model parameters related to hydrology and water quality were calibrated and validated by comparing model predictions with the 8-day interval filed data collected for ten years from the Korea Ministry of Environment. The results indicated that hydrology and water quality parameters appeared to be reasonably comparable to the field data. The pollutant delivery loads of the watershed in 2015 were simulated using the HSPF model. The delivery ratios of each subwatershed were also estimated by the simple ratio calculation of pollutant discharge load and pollutant delivery load. Coefficients of the regression equation between the delivery ratio and specific discharge were also computed using the delivery ratio. Based on the results, multiple regression analysis was performed using the discharge and the physical characteristics of the subwatershed such as the area. The equation of delivery ratio derived in this study is only for the Okdong-cheon watershed, so the larger studies are needed to apply the findings to other watersheds.

Suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) is known to be as a negative feedback regulator in Janus kinase signal transducer and activator of transcription signaling. Highly conserved SOCS box domain was cloned from a Korean malaria vector, Anopheles sinensis. Sequence analysis indicates that it has identity to Anopheles gambiae (96%), Aedes aegypti (94%), Drosophila melanogaster (78%), Mus musculus (72%) and Homo sapiens (72%), respectively. Tissue specificity RT-PCR demonstrated that the expression level of AsSOCS transcript was high at abdomen, midgut, and ovary, whereas developmental expression patterns showed that the level of AsSOCS was high at egg, early pupae, and adult female. On the other hand, RT-PCR analysis after bacterial challenge showed that SOCS mRNA was strongly induced in larvae. In addition, it was also induced by various immune elicitors such as lipoteicoic acid, CpG-DNA, and laminarin. It seems that AsSOCS, repressor of JAK-STAT pathway, is highly conserved in mosquito, and may play an important role in mosquito innate immune response.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Timing of almond intake during a day may result differently in the perspectives of body composition and changes of lipid profile. The current study was conducted to compare the effects of daily almond intake as a preload versus as a snack on body composition, blood lipid profile, and oxidative and inflammation indicators among young Korean adults aged 20-39 years old. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a pre-meal almond group (PM), a snack almond group (SN) in which participants were instructed to consume 56 g of almonds either as a preload before meals or as a snack between meals, respectively, and a control group (CL) in which participants were provided high-carbohydrate iso-caloric control food. Measurements were performed at baseline, weeks 8 and 16. RESULTS: A total of 169 (M 77 / F 92) out of the 227 participants completed the study between June 2014 and June 2015 (n = 58 for PM; 55 for SN; and 56 for CL). A significant decrease in body fat mass was observed in the PM group at both weeks 8 and 16 compared with the CL. There were significant intervention effects on changes of body fat mass (P = 0.025), body fat percentages (P = 0.019), and visceral fat levels (P < 0.001). Consuming almonds as a daily snack reduced the levels of total cholesterol (P = 0.043) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (P = 0.011) without changing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol compared with the CL. CONCLUSION: Almond consumption as a preload modified body fat percentages, whereas snacking on almonds between meals improved blood lipid profiles. This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT03014531.
