As Korean government has activated the renewable portfolio standard (RPS) since 2012, producers have been seeking and using the various renewable resources to meet the RPS quota. One of these efforts, Power Bio-Fuel oil demonstration project is being conducted to check the operability and compatibility with fossil fuel, Fuel oil (B-C) from 2014. The oil is a mixture of vegetable oil and animal fat or fatty acid ester of them and should satisfy some specification to use the power generation. The oil's quality and combustion characteristics are different from conventional oil, Fuel oil (B-C) in current power plant facility. In this study, it was investigated the storage stability and malodor intensity of Bio-Fuel oil.

Korea, which has a high dependency on energy imports, is greatly affected by fluctuations in international oil prices. In order to offset these effects, various policies such as 'diversification of energy sources' and 'energy mix' are being pursued. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is a policy promoted for this purpose, and a compulsory mixing system is applied only to the diesel. In order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in various countries, they are concentrating on the dissemination of bio-alcohol as well as bio-diesel, and commercialization through various verification. In this study, evaluation of domestic materials and vehicles was carried out to promote domestic bio alcohol fuel. We analyzed the fuel characteristics of domestic quality standard items by mixing them with gasoline of automobile at a certain mixing ratio (0%, 3%, 6%, and 10%).

Modern diesel vehicle has to comply with the EURO IV, V regulation with low level of particulate matter and smoke emission Moreover, emission standards of each countries are becoming stringent in advanced countries such as USA and Europe. Because Bio-diesel is similar to diesel fuel, it is essential to judge the environmental and health effects deriving from the use of Bio-diesel in diesel engine. The deterioration characteristics of emission in accordance with aging vehicles must be regulated for Bio-diesel. Therefore, under 1200 driving hours, 220,000km driving distance condition and full load, the deterioration characteristics of emission were estimated. We could reduce sulfur contents of fuel, particulate matter and smoke emission by using Bio-diesel and conform the influence of engine performance, emission, and fuel consumption by Bio-diesel deterioration
The usage of jet fuel has been increasing with increasing passenger and logistics movements under globalization. CO2, which is the main global warming gas from aircraft, was charged about 3.5% of total global CO2 emissions and 12% of transportation fuel emissions. For these reasons, a lot of governments and the international civil aviation organization (ICAO) are trying to reduce CO2 emissions via the introduction of bio-jet fuel. In this paper, we showed the jet fuel properties, specifications, and presentative production methods of bio-jet fuel such as alcohol to jet (ATJ), oil to jet (OTJ), gas to jet (GTJ) and sugar to jet (STJ). Also, we described the status of global and domestic bio-jet fuel usage and the policy plan for efficient distribution.
Microbial fuel cells (MFC) stacked with bipolar plates have been constructed and their performance was tested. In this design, single fuel cell unit was connected in series by bipolar plates where an anode and a cathode were made in one graphite block. Two types of bipolar plate stacked MFCs were constructed. Both utilized the same glucose oxidation reaction catalyzed by Gram negative bacteria, Proteus vulgaris as a biocatalyst in an anodic compartment, but two different cathodic reactions were employed: One with ferricyanide reduction and the other with oxygen reduction reactions. In both cases, the total voltage was the mathematical sum of individual
fuel cells and no degradation in performance was found. Electricity from these MFCs was stored in a supercapacitor to drive external loads such as a motor and electric bulb.

The combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a spark ignition (SI) engine with various test fuels (bioethanol - gasoline blends) and air-fuel ratio were investigated in this research. To investigate the influence of the excess air ratio and ethanol blends on the combustion characteristics such as the cylinder pressure, rate of heat release (ROHR), and fuel consumption rate were analyzed. In addition, the reduction effects of exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) were compared with those of neat gasoline fuel under the various excess-air ratios. The results showed that the peak combustion pressures and the ROHR of bioethanol fuel cases were slightly higher than those of gasoline fuel at all test ranges and fuel ratio. As compared with gasoline fuel (G100) at each given excess air ratio, BSFC of bio-ethanol was increased. The CO, HC, NOx emissions of bio-ethanol blends were lower than those of gasoline fuel under overall experimental conditions.

Non-esterified bio-diesel fuel saves cost by no esterified process and its performance was more similar to diesel oil than esterified bio-diesel fuel when the fuel blended 95% diesel oil and 5% it was used on diesel engine with electronic control system. A performance optimization is necessary for application of non-esterified bio-diesel fuel blended with diesel oil 95% on the latest diesel engine. In this study, test using fractional factorial design was accomplished at 25% and 50% partial load in order to evaluate influence of controllable 6 factors on responses such as specific fuel consumption, nitrogen oxides and coefficiency of variation of indicated mean effective pressure as basic experiment for performance optimization of this fuel. It is cleared that the injection timing and common rail pressure of 6 factors are mainly effective and its effect level is different according to load.
In this study, the ignition characteristics of petroleum-based aviation fuel (Jet A-1), bio aviation fuel (Bio-6308), and blended aviation fuel (50:50, v:v) were analyzed in accordance with change of temperature and pressure. The ignition delay time of each aviation fuel was measured by combustion research unit (CRU) and the compositions of the fuels were analyzed by GC/MS and GC/FID for qualitative and quantitative results. From the results, it was confirmed that the ignition delay times of all aviation fuels were shortened with increasing temperature and pressure. In particular, the effect of temperature was larger than the effect of pressure. Also, the ignition delay time of Jet A-1 was the longest at all measurement conditions, and it was judged that this result is because of the structurally stable characteristics of the benzyl radical generated during the oxidation reaction of the aromatic compound (about 22.48%) in Jet A-1. Also, it was confirmed that Jet A-1 had no section where the degree of shortening of ignition delay time was decreased by increasing temperature, which was because the benzyl radical inhibits the response that can affect the negative temperature coefficient (NTC). The ignition characteristics of blended aviation fuel (50:50, v:v) showed a similar tendency to those of Jet A-1, rather than to those of Bio-6308, so that the blended aviation fuel (50:50, v:v) can be applied to the existing system without any change.
In a mediator-aided microbial fuel cell, the choice of a proper mediator is one of the most important factors for the development of a better fuel cell system as it transfers electrons from bacteria to the electrode. The electrochemical behaviors within the lipid layer of two representative mediators, thionin and safranine O both of which exhibit reversible electron transfer reactions, were compared with the fuel cell efficiency. Thionin was found to be much more effective than safranine O though it has lower negative formal potential. Cyclic voltammetric and fluorescence spectroscopic analyses indicated that both mediators easily penetrated the lipid layer to pick up the electrons produced inside bacteria. While thionin could pass through the lipid layer, the gradual accumulation of safranine O was observed within the layer. This restricted dynamic behavior of safranine O led to the poor fuel cell operation despite its good negative formal potential.

Bio-heavy oil for power generation is a product made by mixing animal fat, vegetable oil and fatty acid methyl ester or its residues and is being used as steam heavy fuel(B-C) for power generation in Korea. However, if the fuel supply system of the fuel pump, the flow pump, the injector, etc., which is transferred to the boiler of the generator due to the composition of the raw material of the bio-heavy oi, causes abrasive wear, it can cause serious damage. Therefore, this study evaluates the fuel characteristics and lubricity properties of various raw materials of bio-heavy oil for power generation, and suggests fuel composition of biofuel for power generation to reduce frictional wear of generator. The average value of lubricity (HFRR abrasion) for bio-heavy oil feedstocks for power generation is $137{\mu}m$, and it varies from $60{\mu}m$ to $214{\mu}m$ depending on the raw materials. The order of lubricity is Oleo pitch> BD pitch> CNSL> Animal fat> RBDPO> PAO> Dark oil> Food waste oil. The average lubricity for the five bio-heavy oil samples is $151{\mu}m$ and the distribution is $101{\mu}m$ to $185{\mu}m$. The order of lubricity is Fuel 1> Fuel 3> Fuel 4> Fuel 2> Fuel 5. Bio-heavy oil samples (average $151{\mu}m$) show lower lubricity than heavy oil C ($128{\mu}m$). It is believed that bio-heavy oil for power generation is composed of fatty acid material, which is lower in paraffin and aromatics content than heavy oil(B-C) and has a low viscosity and high acid value, resulting in inhibition of the formation of lubricating film by acidic component. Therefore, in order to reduce friction and abrasion, it is expected to increase the lubrication of fuel when it contains more than 60% Oleo pitch and BD pitch as raw materials of bio-heavy oil for power generation.
