인진호 열수 추출물이 thioacetamide에 의해 유발된 간손상에 미치는 간보호 효과 (Protective effect of Artemisiae Capillaris Herba water extract on liver injury induced by thioacetamide)

  • 본 연구는 TAA 복강투여로 유발된 간 손상 동물모델에서 인진호 열수 추출물의 간보호 효능을 평가하였으며 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. TAA로 인해 줄어드는 체중은 인진호 열수 추출물을 투여한 군에서 유의하게 증가하였으며, 간손상에 의해 증가한 혈중 암모니아 함량과 MPO 활성은 인진호 열수 추출물 투여군에서 유의하게 감소하였다. 간 조직의 western blotting 결과, 인진호 열수 추출물 투여가 산화적 스트레스 관련 인자들의 발현을 유의적으로 감소시키고, 항산화 관련 인자들의 발현을 유의하게 증가시켰으며, MMPs의 발현은 감소시키고 TIMP-1의 발현은 증가시킴을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 인진호 열수 추출물은 TAA로 유발된 간손상 동물모델에서 항산화 작용을 통해 산화적 스트레스를 억제하여 간보호 효과를 보이는 것으로 판단된다.

전남 보성군 일림산 일원 관속식물상 (The Flora of Vascular Plants in Mt. Ilimsan and Its Adjacent Areas (in Boseong-gun, Jeonnam-do, Korea))

  • 본 연구는 전남 보성군 일림산(664m)의 관속식물상 조사를 통해 자생식물의 분포와 유용 산림자원을 발굴하는데 목적이 있다. 현장조사는 2020년 3월 31일부터 2021년 9월 22일까지 총 27차례가 수행되어, 101과 304속 444종 11아종 42변종 3품종으로 총 500분류군, 853점의 식물표본이 수집되었다. 조사된 식물을 동정한 결과, 산림청 지정 한국특산식물 16분류군, 희귀식물 7분류군, 환경부 지정 적색식물 5분류군이 확인되었다. 식물구계학적 특정종은 총 69분류군으로 I등급 49분류군, II 등급 7분류군, III 등급 11분류군, IV 등급 2분류군이 확인되었다. 환경부 지정 국외반출 승인대상 생물자원 159 분류군이 목록에 포함되어 있으며, 외래식물은 총 49분류군으로 귀화율이 5.6%, 도시화지수는 7.9%이다. 외국으로부터 인위적으로 또는 자연적으로 유입되어 생태계 균형을 교란시킬 우려가 있는 생태계교란식물은 6분류군으로 조사되었다.

Effect of Different Packaging Atmosphere on Microbiological Shelf Life, Physicochemical Attributes, and Sensory Characteristics of Chilled Poultry Fillets

  • This trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of overwrap, vacuum, and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on poultry breast fillets' microbiological, biochemical shelf life and sensory attributes. The fillets were divided into 4 groups, and each of the treatments was replicated 3 times with 60 breast fillets. The first group was a control group with overwrap packaging; the second group was vacuum packed (VP); the third and fourth groups were MAP-1: 0% O2, 40% CO2, 60% N2, and MAP-2: 20% O2, 40% CO2, 40% N2. The microbiological and biochemical analyses were performed for the total viable count, coliform count, Pseudomonas count, Salmonella count, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), pH, cooking loss, color, lipid oxidation, tenderness, and sensory analysis. The data were analysed through two-way ANOVA by Minitab (Minitab 17.3.1). Meat treated with understudy MAP compositions and vacuum packaging reduced total viable count, Pseudomonas count, and total coliform count than control (p<0.05). TVB-N remained below the recommended limit throughout storage except aerobic packaging (p<0.05). Cooking loss (%) was lowered and showed non-significant results (p>0.05) between vacuum packaging and both MAP concentrations. The meat stored in MAP-2 was characterised by higher (p<0.05) visual scores. Whilst MAP-1 showed higher (p<0.05) L* values and overall acceptability. Sample packaged under aerobic packaging showed significant (p<0.05) results for b* and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Meat stored in aerobic packaging showed higher (p<0.05) shear force values. The outcome of this trial may help to promote the application of understudy MAP compositions and rapid detection of microbes by biochemical analysis under local conditions.

오픈액세스논문 통합서비스플랫폼의 경제성 평가 (An Economic Evaluation of an Integrated Service Platform of Open Access Research Papers)

  • 본 연구는 한국과학기술정보연구원의 OA논문 통합서비스플랫폼(Discover)에 대한 비용편익분석을 통해 사업의 경제성 평가를 수행하였다. 학술연구자 1,313명, 바이오산업 연구개발자 49명, 일반 산업체 연구개발자 102명 등 서비스 수혜 집단별로 설문조사를 실시하여 편익측정에 필요한 기초자료를 수집하였다. 시스템 구축과 운영에 소요되는 비용, 직접편익과 간접편익을 추정한 후, 이를 토대로 비용편익분석과 민감도 분석을 실시하였다. 우선 직접 편익에 한정한 비용편익분석 결과, 총 8년간 사업에 투입된 사업투자비용(약 56.3억)의 약 14배인 820억 원의 편익이 발생할 것으로 추정되었다. 직간접편익을 합산한 비용편익분석 결과 역시 BCR이 최소 98.9, NPV는 5,388억 원 등으로 추정되어 사업의 경제적 타당성이 충분히 확보되었다. 본 분석 결과는 국가 차원의 OA논문 통합서비스플랫폼 개발 및 구축의 타당성 확보에 기여할 수 있으며, 본 연구에서 개발된 편익추정모형은 향후 사업 진행 과정에서 평가도구로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

Efficacy and safety of equine cartilage for rhinoplasty: a multicenter double-blind non-inferiority randomized confirmatory clinical trial

  • Background: The efficacy and safety of equine cartilage as a competent xenograft material for rhinoplasty were evaluated and compared to the outcomes of rhinoplasty using silicone implants. Methods: We performed a multicenter, double-blind, non-inferiority, and randomized confirmatory study. Fifty-six patients were randomized 1:1 to the study group (using MegaCartilage-E) and control group (using silicone implants). The Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation (ROE) score, photo documentation, Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS), and adverse event data were obtained until 12 months after surgery. The primary efficacy, which is the change in ROE score 6 months after surgery, was assessed in the modified intention-to-treat set. The secondary efficacy was evaluated in the per-protocol set by assessing the change in ROE score 6 and 12 months after surgery and nasofrontal angle, the height of the nasion, and GAIS 1, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Results: The change in ROE score of the study group was non-inferior to that of the control group; it increased by 24.26±17.24 in the study group and 18.27±17.60 in the control group (p= 0.213). In both groups, all secondary outcome measures increased, but there was no statistical difference. In the safety set, treatment-emergent adverse events occurred in 10 patients (35.71%) in the study group and six patients (21.43%) in the control group (p= 0.237). There were 13 adverse device events in the study group and six adverse device events in the control group (p= 0.515). Conclusion: Processed equine cartilage can be used effectively and safely as xenograft material for rhinoplasty.

Monosodium iodoacetate로 유발된 골관절염 쥐에 유향(乳香) 성분 3-Acetyl-11-Keto-Beta-Boswellic Acid의 연골보호 및 항염증 효과 (3-Acetyl-11-Keto-Beta-Boswellic Acid from Boswellia serrata Attenuates Monosodium Iodoacetate-induced Osteoarthritis by Chondroprotective and Anti-inflammatory Effects)

  • Objectives : 3-Acetyl-11-keto-𝛽-boswellic acid (AKBA) is a major active compound in Boswellia serrata. We investigated the arthritic changes following AKBA administration in monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis rats. Methods : All rats were randomly divided into five groups: Normal, Control, INDO (indomethacin 2 mg/kg treated), AKBA30 (AKBA 30 mg/kg treated), and AKBA60 (AKBA 60 mg/kg treated); drugs were given 2 weeks before MIA injection. For all groups except the normal group, 50 µL of sterile saline with MIA (80 mg/mL) was injected into the right knee joint 2 weeks after drug administration. The drug administration was continued for 4 weeks from 1 week after osteoarthritis induction. The histomorphological changes of knee joint cartilage were observed by H&E staining. Also, the levels of glycosaminoglycan (GAG), cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), 5-LOX-activating protein (FLAP), and leukotriene B4 (LTB4) in the knee joint were determined by the ELISA kits. The expressions of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), inflammatory cytokines, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in knee joint were detected by Western blot. Results : Data show that levels of 5-LOX, FLAP, LTB4, and COMP were downregulated significantly in the AKBA treated groups when compared to those in the Control group. On the other hand, GAG levels were significantly elevated. As a result of Western blot, the AKBA-treated groups significantly inhibited phosphorylation of MAPKs. In addition, significant downregulation of the expression of inflammatory cytokines and MMPs was found in the AKBA-treated groups. Conclusion : Our findings suggest that administration of AKBA could exert better chondroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects for MIA-induced osteoarthritis rats.

Receiver Operating Characteristic Analysis for Prediction of Postpartum Metabolic Diseases in Dairy Cows in an Organic Farm in Korea

  • Postpartum diseases should be predicted to prevent productivity loss before calving especially in organic dairy farms. This study was aimed to investigate the incidence of postpartum metabolic diseases in an organic dairy farm in Korea, to confirm the association between diseases and prepartum blood biochemical parameters, and to evaluate the accuracy of these parameters with a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for identifying vulnerable cows. Data were collected from 58 Holstein cows (16 primiparous and 42 multiparous) having calved for 2 years on an organic farm. During a transition period from 4 weeks prepartum to 4 weeks postpartum, blood biochemistry was performed through blood collection every 2 weeks with a physical examination. Thirty-one (53.4%) cows (9 primiparous and 22 multiparous) were diagnosed with at least one postpartum disease. Each incidence was 27.6% for subclinical ketosis, 22.4% for subclinical hypocalcemia, 12.1% for retained placenta, 10.3% for displaced abomasum and 5.2% for clinical ketosis. Between at least one disease and no disease, there were significant differences in the prepartum levels of parameters like body condition score (BCS), non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), total bilirubin (T-bil), direct bilirubin (D-bil) and NEFA to total cholesterol (T-chol) ratio (p < 0.05). The ROC analysis of each of these prepartum parameters had the area under the curve (AUC) <0.7. However, the ROC analysis with logistic regression including all these parameters revealed a higher AUC (0.769), sensitivity (71.0%), and specificity (77.8%). The ROC analysis with logistic regression including the prepartum BCS, NEFA, T-bil, D-bil, and NEFA to T-chol ratio can be used to identify cows that are vulnerable to postpartum diseases with moderate accuracy.

백두대간의 사찰림 황악산과 직지사의 식물상 (The Flora of Mt. Hwang-ak and Jikjisa, Temple Forest in Baekdudaegan)

  • 본 연구는 황악산(경상북도, 김천시)과 직지사 경내 식재종에 대한 식물상 조사로 2019년 4월부터 10월까지 총 12회에 걸쳐 관속식물 분포를 조사하였다. 조사된 전체 분류군은 96과 312속 462종 4아종 59변종 9품종 총 534분류군이 자생하는 것으로 확인되었다. 조사된 식물 중 한국특산식물이 13분류군, 산림청지정 희귀식물 멸종위기종 1분류군, 위기종 2분류군, 취약종 4분류군, 약관심종 10분류군, 자료부족종 1분류군 총 14분류군으로 확인됐다. 침입외래식물은 광분포 등급14분류군, 심각한 확산등급 5분류군, 우려되는 확산등급 3분류군, 경미한 확산등급 7분류군, 잠재적 확산등급 5분류군, 총 34분류군으로 귀화율은 6%, 도시화지수는 10%로 나타났으며, 약용식물은 167분류군으로 종합되었다. 직지사 경내에 식재종은 43과 64속 68종 6변종 7품종 총 81분류군으로 일부 희귀 및 특산식물 7분류군, 약용식물 44분류군으로 다른 사찰과 중복되는 종은 41분류군(51%), 빈번 중복종 7분류군(9%)으로 한국의 불교식물에 해당하는 식물은 33분류군으로 확인되었다.

전통적인 한방 처방 경옥고의 면역 증강 효과 (Immune-enhancing effects of a traditional herbal prescription, Kyung-Ok-Ko)

  • Objectives : A traditional herbal prescription, Kyung-Ok-Ko (KOK), has long been used in oriental medicine as an invigorant for age-related diseases, such as amnesia and stroke. However, the beneficial value of KOK for immune responses is largely unknown. Based on the above mentioned effects of KOK, other previous reports, and its use in traditional medicine, we hypothesized that KOK displays beneficial effects against methotrexate (MTX)-induced immune suppression. Methods : We investigated the effects of KOK (0.6 g/kg/day, oral (p.o.)) on deteriorated immunity caused by MTX (2 mg/kg/day, p.o.) in an immune suppression mouse model. MTX was fed to mice once a day for 7 days. After the immune responses of the mice deteriorated by MTX treatment, KOK in water was fed to the mice once a day for 14 days. We then measured the expression levels of various cytokines, such as T helper cell (Th1, Th2) cytokines, and the number of immune cells, such as spleen T cells, B cells, and macrophages. Results : The data showed that MTX decreased Th1 profiles (interferon $(IFN)-{\gamma}$, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-12) and the number of immune cells, and increased Th2 profiles (IL-4, IL-5, IL-13), which were normalized significantly by post-administration of KOK. However, there was no significant difference in body-weight gain between MTX- and KOK-treated mice. Conclusion : These results indicate that KOK has immune-enhancing functions and reduces immunotoxicity of MTX, suggesting that supplementation with KOK will improve immune responses clinically and be useful for the prevention of immune-related diseases.

Effects and safety of COVID-19 vaccination on assisted reproductive technology and pregnancy: A comprehensive review and joint statements of the KSRM, the KSRI, and the KOSAR

  • Humanity is in the midst of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and vaccines-including mRNA vaccines-have been developed at an unprecedented speed. It is necessary to develop guidelines for vaccination for people undergoing treatment with assisted reproductive technology (ART) and for pregnancy-related situations based on the extant laboratory and clinical data. COVID-19 vaccines do not appear to adversely affect gametes, embryos, or implantation; therefore, active vaccination is recommended for women or men who are preparing for ART. The use of intravenous immunoglobulin G (IVIG) for the treatment of immune-related infertility is unlikely to impact the effectiveness of the vaccines, so COVID-19 vaccines can be administered around ART cycles in which IVIG is scheduled. Pregnant women have been proven to be at risk of severe maternal and neonatal complications from COVID-19. It does not appear that COVID-19 vaccines harm pregnant women or fetuses; instead, they have been observed to deliver antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) to the fetus. Accordingly, it is recommended that pregnant women receive COVID-19 vaccination. There is no rationale for adverse effects, or clinical cases of adverse reactions, in mothers or neonates after COVID-19 vaccination in lactating women. Instead, antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 can be delivered through breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers should consider vaccination. In summary, active administration of COVID-19 vaccines will help ensure the safe implementation of ART, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
