  • It is a challenge from an industrial point of view to fabricate silicon nitride substrates with high thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties for power devices from high-purity Si scrap powder by means of thick film processes such as tape casting. We characterize the residual carbon and oxygen content after the binder burnout followed by nitridation as a function of the temperature in the temperature range of $300^{\circ}C-700^{\circ}C$ and the atmosphere in a green tape sample which consists of high-purity Si powder and polymer binders such as polyvinyl butyral and dioctyl phthalate. The optimum condition of binder burnout is suggested in terms of the binder removal temperature and atmosphere. If considering nitridation, the burnout of the organic binder in air compared to that in a nitrogen atmosphere could offer an advantage when fabricating reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ substrates for power devices to enable low carbon and oxygen contents in green tape samples.

  • Copper phthalocyanine(CuPc) thick film solar cells were fabgricated byspin coating and their photovoltaic behavior was studied. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) was used for the binder. Aluminum and indium were employed as electrode metals to form Schottky contact to CuPc layer. The cells showed rectifying J-V characteristics in the dark and photovoltaic effect associated with white light irradiation. The photovoltaic performance of the cells strongly depended on contact metals, in which the formation of oxide layer between binder layer and electrode interface affected the solar cell. Influnce of the CuPc layer thickness, CuPc/PVdF ratio on the photovoltaic performance of the cells were also examined.

  • In this study, we synthesized novel UV-curable binders and applied for negative photoresist of display device. First, we synthesized UV-curable binders by radical polymerization with a mixture of Styrene/Methyl methacrylate/Methacrylic acid/Glycidyl methacrylate/N-Cyclohexylmaleimide at a fixed composition. Following the first step, we prepared a negative photoresist mixture optimized with photo sensitive initiator and others for the litho test. And then, we studied resolution and film retention with molecular weight of each binders and numerical value of Alkaline Desolution Rate(ADR). As a result of the litho test, we found that if the novel polymers have same numerical value of ADR, the resolution decreased and the film retention increased with the increasing of molecular weight of photoresist binder.

  • Sol-gel binder was prepared by hydrolysis and condensation reaction using boehmite sol and methyltrimethoxysilane as a function of aging-time. The coating slurry was composed of a plate-shape alumina in the sol-gel binder for the EPD process, in which particles dispersed in the slurry were deposited on the electrode under an electric field due to the surface charge. We studied the effects of three parameters: the content of boehmite, the aging time, and the applied voltage, on the physical, thermal, and electrical properties of the hybrid composite films by EPD. The amount of boehmite was 10 ~ 20 wt% and the aging time was 0.5 ~ 72, with a fixed amount of plate-shape alumina of 10 wt%. The condition of applied voltage was 5 ~ 30 V with a distance of 2 cm between the electrode during the EPD process. We confirmed that a structure of hybrid composite films of well-ordered plate alumina was deposited on the substrate when the film was prepared using a sol-gel binder composed of 15 wt% boehmite with 1 hr aging time and EPD at 10 V. The process shows a weight loss of 7% at $500^{\circ}C$ in TGA and a breakdown voltage of 8 kV at $87{\mu}m$.

  • As am economical and effective way of antimicrobial film fabrication , antimicrobial agents were coated on the LDPE film with a binder mediu. the fabricated films were then applied tomodified atmosphere packaging of fresh strawberries. A binder of polyamide was selected for the coating medium, based on the stability in water. 1% grapefruit seed extract-coated film showed the antimicrobial activity on the plate media against EScherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, bacillus subtilis , Bacillus cereus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Micrococcus flavus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, while one with 10% Coptis chinesis extract inhibited only M. 림편 and one coated with 10% rheum palmatum extract did not inhibit any of 10 strains tested. The packages of fresh strawberries by using antimicrobial agents-coated films created the gas compositions of O2 1.4-5.5% and CO2 5.7-7.9%, and contributed to reduced growth of total aerobic bacteria and yeast/molds on the produced. However, their lower microbial count was not correlated directly with the reduced decay of the fruits.

  • The applicability of the white LED from the blue LED of the coating film as a binder for surface and curved coatings were confirmed. The particle size of YAG is D50: 9~10 ㎛, and the crystal structure is garnet (Y3Al5O12), cubic. The coating film had no cracks, at the same time, the silica sol was uniformly coated with YAG phosphor, and the YAG content and thickness in the coating film showed a tendency to increase up to 40 ㎛ in proportion to the increase in the amount added. Furthermore, as the YAG content increased, the PL emission intensity increased and the color coordinate shift toward the end of the chromatic locus curve was confirmed.

  • For the preparation of hardened films which can be applied as a binder for flame-resistant materials such as silica, linseed oil was subjected to a low temperature plasma treatment with argon, or oxygen gas. The film was produced much faster than so-called drying of oil in air. The SEM analysis for silica particles embedded in the hardened film after plasma treatment showed that the silica particles were immobilized on substrate and were evenly dispersed. The FT-IR spectral analysis for the plasma-treated linseed oil films demonstrated that the radicals which were formed during the plasma treatments caused the linseed oil to be cross-linked, and the plasmas attacked carbon chains of the oil randomly without focusing on specific vulnerable bonds such carbon double and carbonyl bonds intensively unless exposure times of the plasmas were prolonged too much, while the cross-linking of the air-dried film was considered to occur at the well-known typical sites, i.e., carbon-carbon double bond and ${\alpha}$-methylene carbon. Burning times, as a measure of flame/fire resistance, of silica-filled cellulose substrates, increased with increasing contents of silica.

  • We fabricated a printed Ag:CNT film as a liquid sensor for the detection of HNS (hazardous and noxious substances) in seawater. The paste required for printing was prepared using Ag powder, MWCNTs (multi-walled carbon nanotubes), and an organic binder. The heat treatment process for binder removal was optimized. In order to confirm that the sensor was operational, the resistance change characteristics in brine (3.5%) and methanol (99.8%) were assessed at $20^{\circ}C$. EDL (electrical double layer) formation and redox reactivity were confirmed as the most important reactions affect each electrical property of sensor in brine and methanol. From these results, it was determined that printed Ag:CNT film can be applied as a sensor to detect HNS in seawater.

  • EVA Powder modified high strength concretes were prepared by varying polymer/binder mass ratio with a constant water/binder mass ratio of 0.3. The effect of EVA powder on the slump, hydration heat, compressive and flexural strength, toughness and water absorption ratio was studied. In hydration heat test, temperature of hydration reaction displayed almost fixed level regardless of containing rate of EVA powder, but peak time of hydration reaction displayed late inclination as containing rate of powder increases. With the same water/binder mass ratio, the compressive strength and water absorption of EVA powder modified concretes decreased slightly when EVA powder was added and the flexural strength of EVA powder modified concretes rised slightly when EVA powder was added. Also, the toughness of the modified concretes can be improved markedly. The interpenetrating structure between the polymeric phase and cement hydrates formed at a $2{\sim}6%$(containing rate of EVA powder). The properties of the polymer modified concretes were influenced by the polymer film, cement hydrates and the combined structure between the organic and inorganic phases.

  • YBaCuO oxide superconductor-shows superconductive at Liquid Nitrogen temperature-must be preparate wire or thin film form for utility. The wiring is possible with heat treatment after appropriate mixture of polymeric binder and YBaCuO oxide superconductor has fabricated. This study, analyzed the characteristics of fabricated superconductor and extruded wire after application to each of a mixed at different rate in the superconductor and compared with an original pure sample. From the result, we knew that the binder component influences superconducting characteristics. The best condition for superconductivity occurred at a criticla temperature of 86.4K (8:2 rate) and at a critical current density of 100.27A/cmy with a binder packing ratio of about 20~25 percent.
