  • The mechanical properties of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete (SFRHSC) made with binary and ternary blends of metakaolin (MK) and ground pumice (GP) are investigated in this study. The investigated properties are ultrasonic pulse velocity ($U_{pv}$), compressive strength ($f_c$), flexural strength ($f_f$) and splitting tensile strength ($f_{st}$) of SFRHSC. A total of 16 steel fiber reinforced concrete mixtures were produced by a total binder content of $500kg/m^3$ for determining the effects of MK and GP on the mechanical properties. The design $f_c$ was acquired from 70 to 100 MPa by using a low water-binder ratio of 0.2. The test results exhibit that high strength concrete can be obtained by replacing the cement with MK and GP. Besides, correlations between these results are executed for comprehending the relationship between mechanical properties of SFRHSC and the strong correlations are observed between these properties. Moreover, two models in the gene expression programming (GEP) for predicting the $f_c$ of SFRHSC made with binary and ternary blends of MK and GP have been developed. The results obtained from these models are compared with the experimental results. These comparisons proved that the results of equations obtained from these models seem to agree with the experimental results.

  • This paper analyzes properties of the recently developed nonlinear optimization method, Dynamic Encoding Algorithm for Searches (DEAS) [1]. DEAS locates local minima with binary strings (or binary matrices for multi-dimensional problems) by iterating the two operators; bisectional search (BSS) and unidirectional search (UDS). BSS increases binary strings by one digit (i.e., zero or one), while UDS performs increment or decrement to binary strings with no change of string length. Owing to these search routines, DEAS retains the optimization capability that combines the special features of several conventional optimization methods. In this paper, a special feature of BSS and UDS in DEAS is analyzed. In addition, a effective global search strategy is established by using information of DEAS. Effectiveness of the proposed global search strategy is validated through the well-known benchmark functions.

  • Clinical researchers often analyze survival data as binary outcomes using the logistic regression method. This paper examines the information loss resulting from analyzing survival time as binary outcomes. We first demonstrate that, under the proportional hazard assumption, this binary discretization does result in a significant information loss. Second, when fitting a logistic model to survival time data, researchers inadvertently use the maximal statistic. We implement a numerical study to examine the properties of the reference distribution for this statistic, finally, we show that the logistic regression method can still be a useful tool for analyzing survival data in particular when the proportional hazard assumption is questionable.

  • This paper presents a binary clustering network (BCN) and a heuristic algorithm to detect pitch for recognition of keywords in continuous speech. In order to classify nonlinear patterns, BCN separates patterns into binary clusters hierarchically and links same patterns at root level by using the supervised learning and the unsupervised learning. BCN has many desirable properties such as flexibility of dynamic structure, high classification accuracy, short learning time, and short recall time. Pitch Detection algorithm is a heuristic model that can solve the difficulties such as scaling invariance, time warping, time-shift invariance, and redundance. This recognition algorithm has shown recognition rates as high as 95% for speaker-dependent as well as multispeaker-dependent tests.

  • A binary-coupled dipole approximation (BCDA) is described for designing metal nanoparticles with nonperiodic structures in one, two, and three dimensions. This method can be used to simulate the variation of near- and far-field properties through the interactions of metal nanoparticles. An advantage of this method is in its combination with the binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) algorithm to find the best array of nanoparticles from all possible arrays. The BPSO algorithm has been used to design an array of plasmonic nanospheres to achieve maximum absorption, scattering, and extinction coefficient spectra. In BPSO, a swarm consists of a matrix with binary entries controlling the presence ('1') or the absence ('0') of nanospheres in the array. This approach is useful in optical applications such as solar cells, biosensors, and plasmonic nanoantennae, and optical cloaking.

  • Binary control with integral COFB is presented to alleviate the chattering. Binary control system consists of the main loop and the external loop which transforms the gain of main loop smoothly, and can generate the continuous control input under the existence of the delay and the switching frequency limitation of the controller. Therefore, it has the properties of chattering alleviation, in addition, advantages of the conventional variable structure control. To confirm the validity of the developed controller, position control of brushless DC motor with binary controller as a position controller is performed.

  • In this study, binary blended concrete mix with fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag was prepared according to 3 level of water reduction performance of chemical admixture (0%, 8% and 16%) and 3 level of water-cement ratio (40%, 45% and 50%) for evaluation of quality properties of binary blended concrete according to performance of chemical admixture. concrete mix was carried out repetition test of three times in order to secure the reliability. As a result, compressive strength according to performance of chemical admixture was found that difference of strength was about 20% occurred, chemical admixture was showed that a great influence on qualities of concrete. In addition, reflected the effect of performance of chemiacal admixture, prediction model equations for concrete compressive strength was proposed, it was found that more than 85% of the high correlation.

  • The structural properties of varistors surface studied by fractal phenomenon were investigated to verify the relations of electrical characteristics. The SEM photograph of varistors surface were changed by binary code and the grain shape of that were analyzed by fractal dimension. The void of varistors surface was found by fractal program. The relation between grain density and electrical properties depend on fractal dimension. The grain size in varistors surface was decreased by increasing of oxide antimony addition. The grain size of devices by oxide antimony addition were from 5 to $10[{\mu}m]$. The fractal dimension and electrical properties of varistors surface was related to between grain boundary and grain density. The grain size was decreased by increasing of fractal dimensions.

  • We model lattice-mismatched group III-V semiconductor $In_{x}Ga_{1-x}$ alloys with the three-parameter anharmonic Kirkwood-Keating potential, which includes realistic distortion effect by introducing anharmonicity. Although the potential parameters were determined based on optical properties of the binary parent alloys InAs and GaAs, simulated dielectric functions, reflectance, and Raman spectra of alloys agree excellently with experimental data for any arbitrary atomic composition. For a wide range of atomic composition, InAs- and GaAs-bond retain their respective properties of binary parent crystals despite lattice and charge mismatch. It implies that use of the anharmonic Kirkwood-Keating potential may provide an optimal model system to investigate diverse and unique optical properties of quantum dot heterostructures by circumventing potential parameter searches for particular local structures.

  • In this study, the fundamental properties of $M_xP$ (M = Ti, V, Fe; x = 2, 3) binary compounds were investigated in terms of the FLAPW method within GGA. The calculated lattice parameters are well consistent with experimental values. Among considered systems, only the FM state of $Fe_xP$ compounds found to be more stable compared to the NM one. Discussion on the fundamental properties of $M_xP$ ternary compounds also will be given.
