  • A numerical model for the solidification of binary mixture is proposed. Numerical model, which employs enthalpy method, is modified from Continuum model, that is, improved relation is proposed for the Enthalpy - Temperature - Concentration - Liquid Mass Fraction. One dimensional example was selected to verify the proposed model. The results show that the new relation can be applied successfully to the solidification or melting of binary mixture.

  • Planetary ball mill was used to decrease and control the particle size of excipients. The effects of the weight of sample and the revolution number of mill, and grinding time on the particle size of the ground sample were analyzed by response surface methodology. The optimum conditions for the milling of microcrystalline cellulose were 38.82 g of the weight of sample and 259 rpm of the revolution number of mill, and 45 minutes of grinding time. The predicted value of the particle size at the these conditions was $19.02{\mu}m$, of which the experimental value at the similar conditions was $18.68{\mu}m$. The tensile strength of tablets of single-component powders, such as microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose and starch, binary mixtures and ground binary mixtures of these powder were measured at various relative densities. It was found that the logarithm of the tensile strength of the tablets was proportional to the relative density. A simple model, based upon Ryshkewitch-Duckworth equation that was originally proposed for porous materials, has been developed in order to predict the relationship between the tensile strength and relative density of ground binary tablets based on the properties of the constituent single-component powders. The validity of the model has been verified with experimental results for ground binary mixtures. It has demonstrated that this model can well predict the tensile strength of ground binary mixtures based upon the properties of single-component powders, such as true density, and the compositions. When the tensile strength of the mixture of microcrystalline cellulose hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (90:10) and the ground mixture of them were compared, the tensile strength of the ground mixture decreased widely from 45.3 to 5.6% compared to the mixture in case the relative density of tablets was in the range of $0.7{\sim}0.9$. When the tensile strength of the mixture of microcrystalline cellulose starch (80:20) and the ground mixture of them were compared, the tensile strength of the ground mixture decreased widely from 31.0 to 11.6% compared to the mixture in case the relative density of tablets was in the range of $0.7{\sim}0.9$.

  • In longitudinal studies missing data are common and require a complicated analysis. There are two popular modeling frameworks, pattern mixture model (PMM) and selection models (SM) to analyze the missing data. We focus on the PMM and we also propose Bayesian pattern mixture models using generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) for longitudinal binary data. Sensitivity analysis is used under the missing not at random assumption.

  • Impedance imaging for binary mixture is a kind of nonlinear inverse problem, which is usually solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method. Then, the ill-posedness of Hessian matrix often requires the use of a regularization method to stabilize the solution. In this study, the Levenberg-Marquredt regularization method is introduced for the binary-mixture system with various resistivity contrasts (1:2∼1:1000). Several mixture distribution are tested and the results show that the Newton-Raphson iteration combined with the Levenberg-Marquardt regularization can reconstruct reasonably good images.

  • If a liquid droplet evaporates on a solid substrate, when it completely dries, it leaves a peculiar pattern, which depends on the composition of the liquid. Not only a single component liquid but also complex liquids are studied for a different purpose. In particular, a binary mixture droplet has been widely studied and used for an ink-jet printing technology. In this study, we focus on investigating to visualize the internal flow field of an ethanol-water mixture by varying a concentration ratio between two liquids. We measure the in-plane velocity vector fields and vorticities. We believe that this fundamental study about the internal flow field provides a basic idea to understand the dried pattern of the binary mixture droplet.

  • This study explores the feasibility of granite waste aggregate (GWA) as a partial replacement of natural fine aggregate (NFA) in binary blend self-compacting concrete (SCC) prepared with fly ash. Total of nine SCC mixtures were prepared wherein one was Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) based control SCC mixture and remaining were fly ash based binary blend SCC mixtures which included the various percentages of GWA. Fresh properties tests such as slump flow, T500, V-funnel, J-ring, L-box, U-box, segregation resistance, bleeding, fresh density, and loss of slump flow (with time) were conducted. Compressive strength and percentage of permeable voids were evaluated in the hardened state. All the SCC mixtures exhibited sufficient flowability, passing ability, and resistance to segregation. Besides, all the binary blend SCC mixtures exhibited lower fresh density and bleeding, and better residual slump (up to 50% of GWA) compared to the OPC based control SCC mixture. Binary blend SCC mixture incorporating up to 40% GWA provided higher compressive strength than binary blend control SCC mixture. The findings of this study encourage the utilization of GWA in the development of binary blend SCC mixtures with satisfactory workability characteristics as a replacement of NFA.

  • The adsorption equilibrium data for the binary gas mixture system from the pure gas adsorption data of carbon dioxide and ethylene on ZSM-5 prepared were predicted. The binary gas mixture adsorption data have been examined against predicted values by two models-the vacancy solution model(VSM) and the statistical thermodynamic model(STM), using parameters obtained from the single component isotherm. The binary gas mixture data for the carbon dioxide-ethylene system were obtained for cation exchanged forms of ZSM-5 for the gas phase carbon dioxide mole fraction of 0.752 at $37^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The experimental adsorption phase diagrams were obtained for carbon dioxide-ethylene on sodium form ZSM-5 synthesized. The single component adsorption isotherms for carbon dioxide and ethylene were also obtained for this zeolite. The single component data were used to obtain parameters derived in two models. These parameters were, in turn, used to predict the binary mixture isotherms for this zeolite. Both the vacancy solution and the statistical thermodynamic models give satisfactory predictions of adsorption phase diagrams for the binary gas mixtures of carbon dioxide and ethylene on sodium exchanged ZSM-5. Also the correlation between the experimental data and the predicted values is generally in good agreement. The system appears to show ideal behavior with a relatively constant separation factor. The slight increase in adsorption capacity with an increase in ionic radius is due, in part, to the higher polarizability associated with larger cations.

  • The objective of this research was to evaluate the toxicity of the industial xenobiotic Aroclor 1248 (A) and natural origin substances~elemental sulfur (S80) and oleic acid (OA) and their binary mixtures to V. fischeri bioluminescence during the prolonged exposure time (up to 60 min). The bioluminescence quenching test was used to determine the toxic effects. Full factorial experiment design and multiple regression analysis and the comparison of binary mixture effect with the sum of effects of individual chemicals were used for the evaluation of combined effects of toxicants. The analysis of general trend of mixture toxicity to bioluminescence showed that mixture toxic effects were reversible up to 60 min. Data analysis revealed different joint effects, which were depended on mixture composition. S80 enhanced toxic effect of A and acted additively with synergistic interaction. Hydrophobic OA in mixture with A acted antagonistically and in mixture with sulfur caused an additive effect with antagonistic component of interaction. It was concluded that low concentrations of natural toxic substances present in environmental samples as mixtures of chemicals can define the toxicodynamic character of industrial xenobiotics.

  • Objectives: It was known that workers in synthetic leather company are mainly co-exposed to dimethylformamide(DMF) with methyl ethyl ketone(MEK) or toluene(TOL) instead of a single dimethylformamide. This study was examined to the physico-chemical properties in single DMF and binary mixture DMF with MEK or TOL. Materials: Physico-chemical properties were measured by Korean and American Standard Test Methods. Results: Boiling point, specific gravity and flash point in single DMF were significantly higher than binary mixture DMF with MEK or TOL and such difference was dependent on the mixing ratio of MEK and TOL, and low explosion limit in binary mixture DMF with TOL was only significantly lower than single DMF. However, Reid vapor pressure had significantly higher in binary mixture DMF with MEK or TOL compared with single DMF. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that the binary mixture DMF with MEK or TOL synergistically increases volatilization of DMF. It was concluded that the interaction between DMF and MEK and/or TOL might play a key role in the volatilization process of DMF under environmental conditions of workplace.

  • In this paper, heat transfer and pressure oscillation characteristics on oscillating capillary tube heat pipe(OCHP) according to input heat flux, mixture ratio of working fluid and inclination angle were investigated and were compared single working fluid(R-142b) with binary mixture working fluid(R-142b-Ethano1). OCHP was made to serpentine structure of loop type with 10 turns by drilling the channels of length 220mm, width 1.5mm, and depth 1.5mm on the surface of brass plate. In this study, R-l42b and R-l42b-Ethanol were used as working fluids, the charging ratio of working fluids was 40(vol.%), the input heat flux to evaporating section was changed from 0.3W/㎠ to 1.8W/㎠, and mixture ratio of working fluid was R(100%), R(95%)-E(5%), R(90%)-E(10%), and R(85%)-E(15%). From the experimental results, it was found that the effective thermal conductivity of single working fluid was better than that of binary mixture working fluid. But, in case of binary mixture working fluid, critical heat flux was higher than that of single working fluid. And, the higher the mixture ratios of working fluid, the lower heat transfer performance. In case of pressure oscillation, as the inclination angle was lower, pressure wave was more irregular. These phenomena were more serious when the working fluid was binary mixture. Besides, when mixture ratio was higher, saturated pressure was increased, more irregular wave was observed and the mean amplitude was increased. For the same input heat flux, inclination angle and charging ratio, when pressure oscillation has sinusoidal wave, mean amplitude was small, and saturated pressure was low value, the heat transfer was excellent.
