Approximations for the null distribution of a test statistic arising in multivariate analysis to test homogeneity of variances and a mixture of two beta distributions by making use of a product of beta baseline density function and a polynomial adjustment, so called beta-polynomial density approximant, are discussed. Explicit representations of density and distribution approximants of interest in each case can easily be obtained. Beta-polynomial density approximants produce good approximation over the entire range of the test statistic and also accommodate even the bimodal distribution using an artificial example of a mixture of two beta distributions.

A one dimensional cumulus cloud model has been developed to investigate the size distribution of hydrometeors at different heights and at different stages of cloud development. The model results show that the exponential distribution of droplet radius that was employed by many investigators can misinterpret the cloud dynamic fields during the life cycle of cumulus cloud. The results also show the bimodal distribution of cloud water mixing ratios at 25 $\mu$m and 645 $\mu$m in radius at 45 minutes of simulation time. The developed model can be applied in future on the parameterization of cloud microphysical processes and air pollution models.
Since water flow in the ground depends on the pore structure composed of soil grains, equations to predict the hydraulic properties based on the grain size have low accuracy. This paper presents a methodology to compute constriction-pore size distribution by Silveria's method and estimate saturated and unsaturated hydraulic properties of soils. Well-graded soil shows a uni-modal pore size distribution, and poor-graded soil does a bimodal distribution. Among theoretical models for saturated hydraulic conductivity using pore size distribution, Marshall model is well-matched with experimental results. Model formulas for soil-water characteristic curves and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity using the pore size distribution are proposed for hydraulic analysis of unsaturated soil. Continuous research is needed to select a model suitable to estimate hydraulic properties by applying the developed model formulas to various soils.
On the basis of vegetation data in the 9.12 ha (380 m ${\times}$ 240 m) permanent sample plot of the spruce-fir valley forest in Liangshui National Reserve of Xiaoxing'an Mountains, the study was conducted to evaluate spatial distribution pattern and spatial association by using point pattern analysis for living and dead trees of Larix gmelini by DBH size class. The number of L. gmelini were counted as 59 living stems/ha (6.42 $m^2$/ha of basal area) and 34 dead stems/ha (2.86 $m^2$/ha of basal area). The distributional curve of diameter class exhibited bimodal shape. The analysis of spatial distribution patterns of all living larch stems noted the clumped distribution on the whole. The size of larch aggregates of dead stems was decreased as diameter class was increased. The distribution of dead stems became gradually randomized with decreased clumped size as the scale increased. Living stems and dead stems of the larch had positive spatial association at most of scales, illustrating that the occurrence of mortality of the larch tree was closely related to the distribution pattern of living larch trees.
This study investigated the depositional environment of the area of Anmyeondo in the mid-western coast of Korea. A total of 142 surface sediments were analyzed, and leveling survey was conducted as well in 12 transects at the sandy tidal flat in the area. The surface sediments are classified into several different types (slightly gravelly Sand, Sand, slightly gravelly sandy Mud, etc.) and they show fining-distribution toward the offshore. Textural parameters are characterized by being coarse, well sorted, positively skewed in the supratidal and intertidal flat, whereas being finer, poorly sorted, negatively skewed in the subtidal flat. According to the C-M diagram, the sediment transport modes are characterized by the mixed mode of bedload and graded suspension in supratidal and intertidal flat, and by graded suspension or uniform suspension in the subtidal flat. Histogram shows a bimodal distribution in the lower subtidal flat which is indicative of two sediment transport modes.
The previous study of chemical evolution of the Galaxy is extended to the radial properties of the Galactic disk. The present model includes radial dependency of the time-dependent bimodal IMF, radial flow of material in the disk, and the change of type I supernova explosion rate with radial distance from the disk center as model parameters and observed gas and stellar density distributions and metallicity abundance gradient as observational constraints. The results of two models in this study explain the observed gas and stellar density distributions well, with the slope of the gas density gradient in the region of 4.5 kpc$Y_1$ and -0.123dex/kpc in model $Y_2$, respectively, which fit well the observed gradient of -0.l1dex/kpc. The abundance gradient reproduced in model $Y_1$ is getting flatter with decreasing radius, while that in model $Y_2$ is getting steeper, which fits better the observed abundance gradient. This result shows the necessity of exponentially increasing type I supernova explosion rate with decreasing radius in order to explain the observed abundance gradient in the disk. The fitness of observed density distribution and star formation rate distribution justifies the reliability of time-dependent bimodal IMF as a compound quantitative chemical evolution model of the Galaxy. The temporal variations of metallicity gradients for carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are also shown.
Background: Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder that often causes functional disability. There have been very few investigations about the clinical characteristics of ET in Korea. Therefore, we performed a study showing the clinical features and electrophysiological findings of ET. Methods: We analyzed medical records and accelerometry data of 152 patients (male vs female; 79 vs 73) with ET, who visited the Neurology Clinic of Hospital from 2000 to 2003. Clinical characteristics of ET were summarized including the age of onset, family history, tremor type, body part involved, and associated symptoms. The frequency of tremor was recorded and the spectral analysis of tremor was performed. Results: The age of tremor onset showed bimodal distribution with peaks in the 2nd and 5th decades. Family history was found in 46 patients (30.3%). The patients with the family history presented earlier onset of tremor than patients without the history (mean age of onset, y: 35.2 vs. 49.9, P < 0.001). Tremor appeared most frequently in hands (94%), and followed by head (25%). In head tremor, "no-no" pattern was mainly observed and the head tremor was more frequently observed in female. The frequency of tremor was negatively correlated with age (r=-0.49, P<0.001). Conclusions: The present study indicated some important findings about ET: (1) bimodal distribution for an age of onset, (2) younger age of onset in patients with a family history, (3) decreasing frequency of the tremor according to age, and (4) higher prevalence of head tremor in female patients.
For non-linear solution of the Boltzmann equation, the cumulant moment method has been studied. To apply the method to the normal shock wave problem, we restricted ourselves to the monatomic Maxwell molecular gases. The method is based on the iterative approach developed by Maxwell-Ikenberry-Truesdell (MIT). The original MIT approach employs the equilibrium distribution function for the initial values in beginning the iteration. In the present work, we use the Mott-Smith bimodal distribution function to calculate the initial values and follow the MIT iteration procedure. Calculations have been carried out up to the second iteration for the profiles of density, temperature, stress, heat flux, and shock thickness of strong shocks, including the weak shock thickness of Mach range less than 1.4. The first iteration gives a simple analytic expression for the shock profile, and the weak shock thickness limiting law which is in exact accord with the Navier-Stokes theory. The second iteration shows that the calculated strong shock profiles are consistent with the Monte Carlo values quantitatively.
In the binary system of SiC and carbon, porosity and pore size distribution of green body was controlled by varying pH, by the addition of polyelectrolyte dispersants, and by using different particle size of starting powders. The preforms having different green microstructure were fabricated by slip casting from suspensions having different dispersion condition. The reaction bonding process was carried out for these preforms. The condition of reaction bonding was 1600$^{\circ}C$ and 20 min. under vacuum atmosphere. The analyses of optical and SEM were studied to investigate the effect of green microstructure on that of reaction bonded silicon carbide and subsequently the mechanical properties of sintered body was investigated. Different green microstructures were obtained from suspensions having different dispersion condition. It was found that the pore size could be remarkably reduced for a fine SiC(0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$). The bimodal microstructure was not found in the present study, which is frequently observed in the typical reaction bonded silicon carbide. It is considered that the ratio between SiC and C was responsible for the formation of bimodal microstructure. For the preform fabricated from the well dispersed suspension, the 3-point bending strength of reaction-bonded silicon carbide was 310${\pm}$40 MPa compared to the specimen fabricated from relatively agglomerated particles having lower value 260${\pm}$MPa.

The bedform stability diagram indicates the shape and size of bedforms that will occur to a given grain size and flow velocity. The diagram has been constructed from experimental data which have been mostly acquired by flume experiments. Generally, the flume experiments have been performed on well sorted sediments with unimodal grain size distribution, in order to understand relationship between grain size and flow velocity. According to the diagram, a ripple structure initiates to be formed from lower flow regime flat bed, as the flow velocity increases on the surface of fine-sand or medium-sand sediments. This study aims to verify that the experimental result of bedform stability diagram will be reproduced in our flume experimental systems, and also to confirm that the result is consistent not only on well-sorted sand sediments but also on poorly-sorted sand sediments with bimodal grain size distribution. The experimental results in this study show that initiation of 2D or 3D ripple structure on poorly-sorted sand sediments requires higher flow velocity and shear stress than those for initiation of the structure on well-sorted sand sediments. In general, carbonate sediments are characterized by poor sorting due to inactive hydraulic sorting and bimodal grain size distribution with allochems and matrices. The results suggest that the carbonate depositional system possibly need a higher flow velocity for initial formation of 2D or 3D bedform structures. The reason might be the fact that pulling off and lifting of a grain in poorly sorted sediments require more energy due to sorting, friction, stabilization, armour effects, and their complex interaction. This preliminary study warrants additional experiments under various conditions and more accurate analysis on the relationship between formation of bedforms and grain size distribution.
