The evolution of deep-sea waves is driven by energy input from wind, nonlinear energy transfer between wave components, and dissipation through whitecaps. A comparative study was implemented by the use of two wave models in which only the computation methods of nonlinear wave-wave interactions are different from each other. It was reaffirmed that the nonlinear interaction plays a central role in such phenomena that occurred during the spectral growth of wind-seas as down-shift of the spectral peak frequency, overshoot, undershoot, and formation of self-similar spectrum. Specifically, the directional distribution at high frequencies develops into bimodal form, which is attributed to the nonlinear interactions. As saturation stage is reached, spectral density at high frequencies becomes proportional to negative 4 power to the frequency. Perturbations introduced into the spectrum quickly vanished through the actions of the self-similar mechanism. Thus, the nonlinear transfer has important contribution to the stability of numerical ocean wave models.

The image binarization is applied frequently as one part of the preprocessing phase for a variety of image processing techniques such as character recognition and image analysis, etc. The performance of binarization algorithms is determined by the selection of threshold value for binarization, and most of the previous binarization algorithms analyze the intensity distribution of the original images by using the histogram and determine the threshold value using the mean value of Intensity or the intensity value corresponding to the valley of the histogram. The previous algorithms could not get the proper threshold value in the case that doesn't show the bimodal characteristic in the intensity histogram or for the case that tries to separate the feature area from the original image. So, this paper proposed the novel algorithm for image binarization, which, first, segments the intensity range of grayscale images to several intervals and calculates mean value of intensity for each interval, and next, repeats the interval integration until getting the final threshold value. The interval integration of two neighborhood intervals calculates the ratio of the distances between mean value and adjacent boundary value of two intervals and determine as the threshold value of the new integrated interval the intensity value that divides the distance between mean values of two intervals according to the ratio. The experiment for performance evaluation of the proposed binarization algorithm showed that the proposed algorithm generates the more effective threshold value than the previous algorithms.
Copper powder dispersed with 4 vol.% of $Cr_2O_3$ was successfully produced by a simple milling at 210 K with a mixture of $Cu_2O$, Cu and Cr elemental powders, followed by Hot Pressing (HP) at 1123 K and 50 MPa for 2h to consolidate the milled powder. The microstructure of the HPed material was characterized by standard metallographic techniques such as XRD (X-ray Diffraction), TEM and STEM-EDS. The results of STEMEDS analysis showed that the HPed materials comprised a mixture of nanocrystalline Cu matrix and $Cr_2O_3$ dispersoid with a homogeneous bimodal size distribution. The mechanical properties of the HPed materials were characterized by micro Vickers hardness test at room temperature. The thermodynamic considerations on the heat of formation, the incubation time to ignite MSR (Mechanically induced Self-sustaining Reaction), and the adiabatic temperature for the heat of displacement reaction between the oxide-metal are made for the delayed formation of $Cr_2O_3$ dispersoid in terms of MSR suppression. The results of TEM observation and hardness test indicated that the relatively large dispersoids in the HPed materials are attributed to the significant coarsening for the high temperature consolidation; this leads to the low Vickers hardness value. Based on the thermodynamic calculation for the operating processes with a limited number of parameters, the formation kinetics and coarsening of the $Cr_2O_3$ dispersoid are discussed.
The objective of this study was to map gene/QTL for photoblastism in a weedy rice (photoblastic rice: PBR) using DNA markers. Light-induced effect on germination of seeds was compared among three accessions (Oryza sativa L.), PBR, Milyang 23 and Ilpum. Results showed that PBR seeds started to show photoblastism during seed development, different from Ilpum and Milyang 23. Frequency distribution of germination in the F4 lines from crosses between Ilpum and PBR and, Milyang 23 and PBR revealed bimodal distributions suggesting that photoblastism was controlled by a few genes. Bulked segregant analysis using $F_4$ populations derived from the above two crosses was conducted to identify gene/QTL for photoblastism. Two QTL were identified on chromosomes 1 and 12 explaining 11.2 and 12.8% of the phenotypic variance, respectively. Two QTL were further mapped between two SSR markers, RM8260 and RM246 on chromosome 1, and between RM270 and 1103 on chromosome 12. It is noteworthy that two QTL for photoblastism were colocalized with the QTL for seed dormancy reported in the previous QTL studies. The clustering of two genes for photoblastism and dormancy possibly indicates that these regions constitute rice phytochrome gene clusters related to germination. Because PBR has a low degree of dormancy, a pleiotropic effect of a single gene controlling dormancy and photoblastism can be ruled out. The linked markers will provide the foundation for positional cloning of the gene.
Objectives: In this study, a nine-stage cascade impactor was used to collect dust, and the concentration of $PM_{2.1}$ & $PM_{10}$ and alveolar deposition ratio were investigated. Methods: This study was conducted at Kunsan National University from May to June 2016. A nine-stage Cascade Impactor was used to analyze the concentrations of fine and ultrafine dust and to estimate the alveolar deposition rate by particle size of atmospheric dust particles. The pore size of each stage of the collector used in this study gradually increased from F to 0, with the F-stage as the last stage. Results: The mass fraction of PM showed a bimodal distribution divided into $PM_{2.1}$ & $PM_{10}$ based on $2.1-3.1{\mu}m$. The average mass fraction of particulate matter in the range of $2.1-3.1{\mu}m$ was 44%, and the area occupied by $PM_{2.1}$ was similar. Therefore, the Gunsan area is considered to be a region where there are similar effects from anthropogenic and natural sources. Conclusion: Dust collecting efficiency increased with the stage of collecting fine dust, and the efficiency of collection was very low at the stage of collecting ultra-fine dust. The seasonal overall efficiency of the Cascade Impactor was 44% in spring and 37.4% in summer, and the average overall efficiency was 40.7%. The alveolar deposition rate of $PM_{2.1}/PM_{10}$ during the sampling period was estimated to be about 75% deposited in the alveoli.
Particulate matter (PM) was collected using micro-orifice uniform deposit impactors from a residential (RES) site and an industrial (IND) site in Ulsan, South Korea, in September-October 2014. The PM samples were measured based on their size distributions (11 stages), ranging from $0.06{\mu}m$ to over $18.0{\mu}m$. Nine trace metals (As, Se, Cr, V, Cd, Pb, Ba, Sb, and Zn) associated with PM were analyzed. The PM samples exhibited weak bimodal distributions irrespective of sampling sites and events, and the mean concentrations of total PM (TPM) measured at the IND site ($56.7{\mu}g/m^3$) was higher than that measured at the RES site ($38.2{\mu}g/m^3$). The IND site also showed higher levels of nine trace metals, reflecting the influence of industrial activities and traffic emissions. At both sites, four trace metals (Ba, Zn, V, and Cr) contributed to over 80% of the total concentrations in TPM. The modality of individual trace metals was not strong except for Zn; however, the nine trace metals in $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$ accounted for approximately 50% and 90% of the total concentrations in TPM, respectively. This result indicates that the size distributions of PM and trace metals are important to understand how respirable PM affects public health.

Currently, due to the widespread use of a smartphone, QR codes allow users to access a variety of added services. However, the QR codes posted on curved surfaces tend to be non-uniformly illuminated and bring about the decline of recognition rate. So, in this paper, the block-adaptive binarization policy is adopted to find an optimal threshold appropriate for bimodal image like QR codes. For a large block, its histogram distribution is found to get an initial threshold and then the block is partitioned to reflect the local characteristics of small blocks. Also, morphological operation is applied to their neighboring boundary at the discontinuous at the QR code junction. This paper proposes an authentication method based on the color code, uniquely painted within QR code. Through a variety of practical experiments, it is shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional method in detecting QR code and also maintains good recognition rate up to 40 degrees on curved surfaces.

S0 galaxies are mostly known to be formed in dense environments from spiral progenitors. Recently, however, a new formation scenario has been suggested that field S0s can be formed from elliptical progenitors. The Sombrero galaxy (M104, NGC 4594) is a massive disk galaxy located in the field environment, and its morphological type has been controversial from Sa to E. Thus, it is an ideal target to test the new scenario. We trace the giant halo of M104 with globular clusters to test this scenario. From the wide images obtained with CFHT/MegaCam, we find a large number of globular clusters in this galaxy. We also confirm their membership by measuring the radial velocities from the spectra obtained with MMT/Hectospec. The color distribution of these globular clusters is bimodal, and blue (metal-poor) globular clusters are more spatially widely spread than red (metal-rich) globular clusters. This indicates that M104 hosts a giant metal-poor halo as well as an inner metal-rich halo. Combining this result with the fact that M104 is unusually massive and brighter than other spiral galaxies, we infer that M104 was indeed a massive elliptical galaxy that had formed a metal-rich halo by gas-rich mergers and a metal-poor halo by gas-poor mergers. In addition, we find young star clusters around the disk of M104, which shows that the disk formed after the spheroidal halos had formed. In conclusion, we suggest that M104 was originally a massive elliptical galaxy and was transformed to a lenticular galaxy by acquiring its disk later.

A newly cloned 4-α-glucanotransferase (αGT) from Deinococcus geothermalis and two typical bacterial αGTs from Thermus scotoductus and Escherichia coli (MalQ) were investigated. Among 4 types of catalysis, the cyclization activity of αGTs that produces cycloamylose (CA), a valuable carbohydrate making inclusion complexes, was intensively studied. The new αGT, DgαGT, showed close protein sequence to the αGT from T. scotoductus (TsαGT). MalQ was clearly separated from the other two αGTs in the phylogenetic and the conserved regions analyses. The reaction velocities of disproportionation, cyclization, coupling, and hydrolysis of three αGTs were determined. Intriguingly, MalQ exhibited more than 100-fold lower cyclization activity than the others. To lesser extent, the disproportionation activity of MalQ was relatively low. DgαGT and TsαGT showed similar kinetics results, but TsαGT had nearly 10-fold lower hydrolysis activity than DgαGT. Due to the very low cyclizing activity of MalQ, DgαGT and TsαGT were selected for further analyses. When amylose was treated with DgαGT or TsαGT, CA with a broad DP range was generated immediately. The DP distribution of CA had a bimodal shape (DP 7 and 27 as peaks) for the both enzymes, but larger DPs of CA quickly decreased in the DgαGT. Cyclomaltopentaose, a rare cyclic sugar, was produced at early reaction stage and accumulated as the reactions went on in the both enzymes, but the increase was more profound in the TsαGT. Taken together, we clearly demonstrated the catalytic differences between αGT groups from thermophilic and pathogenic bacteria that and showed that αGTs play different roles depending on their lifestyle.

This study was performed to estimate quartz contents in the both bulk and airborne dust samples and to determine particle size distribution of airborne dust from the selected foundry operations. Total dust samples were collected by a 37mm cassette and respirable by a 10 mm nylon cyclone. Particle size distributions were determined by a Marple's 8-stage cascade impactor at the melting, molding, shakeout and finishing operations. The presence of elements in the dust samples were confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy equipped with the energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The quartz contents were estimated using the intensity of the absorption peak of quartz at 799 cm-l by the Fourie Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results were as follows: 1. The analysis of data from cascade Impactor showed bimodal distributions of particle size at the melting, molding and shakeout operations. Mass median aerodynamic diameters for the distributions determined by histogram were $0.48-1.65{\mu}m$ for small and $13.43-19.58{\mu}m$ for large modes. In the dust samples collected at the finishing operations, however, only a large mode of $18.89{\mu}m$ was found. 2. The percentages of total to respirable dust concentration calculated from the impactor data ranged from 42 % to 66 %. The average concentrations of respirable dust by cyclone were $0.85-1.28mg/m^3$ collected from the workers, and were $0.23-0.56mg/m^3$ from the areas surveyed. Dust concentrations of personal samples were statistically significantly higher than those of area samples. The highest dust concentration was obtained from the personal samples of the finishing operation. 3. The mean percentages of silicon and oxygen estimated by SEM-EDXA in the bulk samples ranged from 35.83 % to 36.02 % and from 39.93 %-41.64 %, respectively. 4. The average quartz contents estimated by FTIR in the respirable dust from personal samples ranged from 4.32 % to 5.36 % and 4.54 % to 4.70 % in the bulk samples. No statistical difference of quartz content was found between foundry operations. In this study, quartz content was quantified by FTIR. Although no statistically significant difference in quartz content between airborne and bulk, samples and between different foundry operations was found, it is recommended that quartz content in the individual sample of respirable dust be analyzed and the results be used either to select an applicable quartz limits or to calculate the exposure limit. Further studies, however, are needed to compare the results by FTIR and XRD since it is reported that the quartz content determined by FTIR is different from that by XRD.
