  • The ethanolic extracts of two shallow water sponge species collected from the Aegean Sea afforded thirteen terpenoids in total, two of which were determined to be new. The structure elucidation of the terpenoids was carried out by spectroscopic techniques and comparison with related authentic compounds. The terpenoids have also been assayed for antibacterial activity. This is the first report about the metabolites isolated from the marine sponges of the Aegean Sea in Turkey.

  • The need to control the oil content in oily bilge water discharges to meet the increasing stringent seawater pollution standards has led to the development of gravity type separators. Among the several gravitational methods, a plate type oily water separator can be used as an assistant equipment for the oil filtering system to meet the present IMO standard of 15 ppm, because it is believed to be an efficient method dealing with a large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. The purpose of this paper is to examine the efficiency of oil/water separation with the characteristics of separating plate arrangement. An experimental study was carried out to analyse an efficient treatment oil-water mixture with variation of operating parameters, including flow rates, inlet oil concentrations and the height between the plates. The experimental results show that the height between the plates has a significant effect on the separation efficiency. The best efficiency was acquired when the ration of the height between the plates the plates to distance(H/Ci) was 2 with lower inlet oil concentration and lower flow rate.

  • The resistance and seakeeping performance of a high-speed monohull vessel were investigated through a series of model tests in a towing tank. The hull had a slender wave-piercing bow, round bilge, and small deadrise angle on stern. Tests on the bare hull in calm water were first conducted and tests on spray rails followed. The spray rails were designed to control the flow direction and induce a hydrodynamic lift force on the hull bottom to reduce trim angle and increase rise of the hull. The maximum trim of the bare hull was $4.65^{\circ}$ at the designed speed, but the spray rails at optimum location reduced trim by $0.97^{\circ}$. The ship motion in head seas was examined after the calm water tests. Attaching the rails on the optimum location effectively reduced the pitch and heave motion responses. The vertical acceleration at the fore perpendicular reduced by 11.3%. The effective power in full scale was extrapolated from the model test results and it was revealed that the spray rails did not have any negative effects on the resistance performance of the hull, while they effectively stabilized the vessel in calm water and waves.

  • This study was performed to investigate the contents characteristics of hazardous oil wastes and wastes of liquid fuels from different industrial process. In order to establish a hazardous waste list, samples of various industrial discharge have been analyzed for 16 non-regulated inorganic hazardous substances (i.e., Cu, Pb, Cd, CN, Hg, As, T-Cr, $Cr^{6+}$, Sb, Ni, F, V, Ba, Zn, Be, Se). In more detail, hazardous waste samples including waste hydraulic oils, waste engine, gear and lubricating oils, waste insulating and heat transmission oils, bilge oils, oil/water separator contents processing were collected from 37 workplaces and analyzed. We observed that the most of the inorganic substances exceeded the proposed criteria in many samples. Especially the concentration of Sb in heat transmission oil, bilge oil and gear & lubricating oils were ranged from 6 to 419 mg/kg whereas the proposed criteria is 50 mg/kg. The assessment result of hazardous waste in Korea according to the EWC showed that the out of 24 processes, 16 belongs to absolute entry and 8 belongs to mirror entry. In conclusion, we expect the outcome of this study to align the classification system of hazardous waste management in South Korea with international legislations, and consequently contribute to reduce environmental pollution as well as health risks by toxic wastes.

  • This study was conducted on a circulation system which can recycle waste water from EGCS(Exhaust Gas Cleaning System) using a wet scrubber that is used to treat air pollutants from ships. Though we developed a water treatment system that could remove effectively particulate matters and dispersed oil included in cleaning water for Ship Exhaust Gas Recycle System(DePM & DeSOx), we found that it is difficult to treat minutely dispersed oil only by means of centrifugal-typed purifier. Therefore, to this system, we applied a coalescer that coalesces emulsified minute oil particles in the 2nd phase of dispersion state after being filtered through the centrifugal-typed purifier. After we treated cleaning water drained out of Ship Exhaust Gas Recycle System(DePM & DeSOx) by using both purifier and coalescer, we found that particulate matters and dispersed oil were removed more than 55% and 99%, respectively, in comparison with those contained in cleaning water influent. Putting the results together, we conclude that the treated cleaning water can be recycled as normal cleaning water if this cleaning water treatment system is employed by the wet cleaning tower system for the reduction of air pollutants from ships.

  • Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) has waste oil facilities in 13 ports to collect and treat waste oil, bilge, etc. from ships based upon the Marine Environment Management Act of Korea and MARPOL 73/78 convention. Those facilities were designed and have been operated simply to discharge water under the level 15 ppm of oil contents. However, bad smells occurred from rotten organic matters in waste water and direct discharge of harmful substances to receiving water caused civil appeals. Therefore, KOEM tried to develop new process for treatment of oily waste water from ships, which could mitigate harmful substances, save cost, calm down civil appeals and contribute to marine environment preservation. This process consists of 3 steps to remove oil contents via gravity variation at first, $O_3$ input to contact water and organism deposition by inputting condensate deposits. Then finally upper water will be discharged, and the deposited substances in the bottom will be compressed through spinning machine to transfer to the designated contractors for treatment of wastes. This is very effective and innovative in that it could reduce 3 or 4 steps compared with existing process and mitigate not only waste oil concentration but also hard resolving materials such as colloid, ABS, phosphorus, nitrogen and bad smells. This method is expected to minimize bad smells and harmful gases, to save more than 10% of maintenance cost, and to arrange the good base for garbage treatment business dealing with waste water and bad smell.

  • Domestic laws such as Korea Marine Pollution Prevention Law which has been made and amended according to the conclusions and amendments of various international conventions, especially by MARPOL 73/78, were reviewed and compared with major contents of international conventions, and several alternative measures for legislating new laws or amending existing laws such as Korea Marine Pollution Prevention Law in accordance with new contents and recent amendments of existing and new international conventions were proposed. Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 has been recently accepted in Korea Marine Pollution Prevention Law which should be applied to ships which are the moving point sources of air pollution at Sea rather than in Korea Air Environment Conservation Law which should be applied to automobiles and industrial installations which are the line and/or point sources of air pollution in land. International Convention for Ship's Ballast Water/Sediment Management should be accepted in Korea Marine Pollution Prevention Law or by a new law in order to prevent domes marine ecosystem and costal environment from the invasion of harmful exotic species through the discharge of ship's ballast water. International Convention for the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on the Ships should be accepted in Korea Marine Pollution Prevention Law which should be applied to ships which are navigating in open sea and coastal waters rather than in Korea Noxious Chemicals Management Law. Basel Convention which shall regulate and prohibit inter-nations movements of noxious chemical substances should be accepted in Korea Marine Pollution Prevention Law in order to prevent the movement and transfer of scrap-purpose tanker ships containing bilge water of oil/water mixtures and chemicals remained on board from advanced countries to developing and/or underdeveloped countries and to conserve global marine environment after all.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of thermocycling and mechanical loading on the biaxial flexural strength and the phase transformation of one Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ and two Y-TZP core materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty disc-shaped specimens were obtained from each material. The specimens were randomly divided into three groups (control, thermocycled, and mechanically loaded). Thermocycling was subjected in distilled water for 10000 cycles. Mechanical loading was subjected with 200 N loads at a frequency of 2 Hz for 100000 times. The mean biaxial flexural strength and phase transformation of the specimens were tested. The Weibull modulus, characteristic strength, 10%, 5% and 1% probabilities of failure were calculated using the biaxial flexural strength data. RESULTS. The characteristic strengths of Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ specimens were significantly higher in all groups compared with the other tested materials (P<.001). Statistical results of X-ray diffraction showed that thermocycling and mechanical loading did not affect the monoclinic phase content of the materials. According to Raman spectroscopy results, at the same point and the same material, mechanical loading significantly affected the phase fraction of all materials (P<.05). CONCLUSION. It was concluded that thermocycling and mechanical loading did not show negative effect on the mean biaxial strength of the tested materials.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different modeling agents on the surface microhardness (Vickers hardness number; VHN), roughness (Ra), and color change (ΔE) of a nano-hybrid composite with or without exposure to discoloration by coffee. Materials and Methods: Sixty-four cylinder-shaped nano-hybrid composite specimens were prepared using a Teflon mold. The specimens' surfaces were prepared according to the following groups: group 1, no modeling agent; group 2, Modeling Liquid; group 3, a universal adhesive (G-Premio Bond); and group 4, the first step of a 2-step self-adhesive system (OptiBond XTR). Specimens were randomly allocated into 2 groups (n = 8) according to the storage medium (distilled water or coffee). VHN, Ra, and ΔE were measured at 24 hours, 1 week, and 6 weeks. The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Bonferroni correction for pairwise comparisons was used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). Results: Storage time did not influence the VHN of the nano-hybrid composite in any group (p > 0.05). OptiBond XTR Primer application affected the VHN negatively in all investigated storage medium and time conditions (p < 0.05). Modeling Liquid application yielded improved Ra values for the specimens stored in coffee at each time point (p < 0.05). Modeling Liquid application was associated with the lowest ΔE values in all investigated storage medium and time conditions (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Different types of modeling agents could affect the surface properties and discoloration of nano-hybrid composites.

  • That occur in the ocean and the efficient management of marine litter on marine pollution oil spill response one step further strategies are needed. Marine pollution accidents occurred in 2011, a total of 287 and was found in runoff 369 kL, respectively compared to the previous year decreased by 13% and 39%. Average amount of marine materials during 5-years represent the oil flow of 310.5 kL (heavy fuel oil of 106.0 kL, diesel of 178.9 kL, oily bilge water of 22.3 kL, other oil of 7.7 kL) and the waste of 62.3 tons, the hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) was 510.6 kL. Marine emissions in 2011 by type of waste that a total amount of dumping 3,972 $m^3$, and livestock manure 795 $m^3$(20%), waste water 1,431 $m^3$(36%), sewage sludge 887 $m^3$(22%), wastewater sludge, 813 $m^3$(21%), manure 5 $m^3$(0.1%), other 41 $m^3$(0.9%), respectively. The concept of marine waste and needs to be more clearly defined. Integrated management of hazardous chemicals according to the incident management system should be established. To remove of coastal pollution, response officer needs korean coast response system. Like the marine pollution response, coastal pollution response systems also require step response.
