  • This paper introduces the bidirectional dc-dc converter design case study, which employs silicon-carbide (SiC) MOSFETs for battery energy storage system (BESS). This converter topology is selected as bidirectional synchronous buck converter, which is composed of a half bridge converter, an inductor, and a capacitor, where the converter has less conduction loss than that of a unidirectional buck and boost converter, and to improve the converter efficiency, both the power stage design and power conversion architecture are described in detail. The conduction and switching losses are compared among three different SiC devices in this paper. In addition, the thermal analysis using Maxwell software of each switching device supports the loss analyses, in which both the 2 kW prototype analyses and experimental results show very good agreement.

  • This paper proposes synchronous bidirectional DC-DC converter applying soft-switching technique. The proposed converter integrates two advantages which are conduction loss minimization and switching loss elimination by applying interleaved synchronous buck and ZVT-cell with a single resonant inductor. ZVS is guaranteed for wide load range in CCM(Continuous Conduction Mode) as well as wide output voltage range by current injection method. Also, reverse recovery effects of body diode can be minimized. In addition, it is possible to significantly reduce diode drop voltage occurred during dead time of conventional synchronous buck converter. The validity of the proposed converter is verified through experimental results.

  • This paper presents a new isolated soft-switching bidirectional buck-boost inverter for fuel cell applications. The buck-boost inverter combines an isolated DC-DC converter with a conventional inverter to implement buck-boost DC-DC and DC-AC conversion. The main switches achieve zero voltage switching and zero current switching by using a novel synchronous switching SVPWM and the volume of the transformer in the forward and fly-back mode is also minimized. This inverter is suitable for wide input voltage applications due to its high efficiency under all conditions. An active clamping circuit reduces the switch's spike voltage and regenerates the energy stored in the leakage inductance of the transformer; therefore, the overall efficiency is improved. This paper presents the operating principle, a theoretical analysis and design guidelines. Simulation and experimental results have validated the characteristics of the buck-boost inverter.

  • Bidirectional DC-DC converters allow transfer of power between two dc sources, in either direction. Due to their ability to reverse the direction of flow of power, Dey are being increasingly used in many applications such as battery charge/dischargers, do uninterruptible power supplies, electrical vehicle motor drives, aerospace power systems, telecom power supplies, etc. This Paper Proposes a new bidirectional Sepic/Zeta converter. It has low switching loss and low conduction loss due to auxiliary communicated circuit and synchronous rectifier operation, respectively Because of positive and buck/boost-like DC voltage transfer function(M=D/1-D), the proposed converter is very desirable for use in distributed power system. The proposed converter also has both transformer-less version and transformer one.

  • In order to match the voltages between high voltage battery stacks and low voltage super-capacitors with a high conversion efficiency in hybrid energy sources electric vehicles (HESEVs), a high ratio bidirectional DC-DC converter with a synchronous rectification H-Bridge is proposed in this paper. The principles of high ratio step-down and step-up operations are analyzed. In terms of the bidirectional characteristic of the H-Bridge, the bidirectional synchronous rectification (SR) operation is presented without any extra hardware. Then the SR power switches can achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on and turn-off during dead time, and the power conversion efficiency is improved compared to that of the diode rectification (DR) operation, as well as the utilization of power switches. Experimental results show that the proposed converter can operate bidirectionally in the wide ratio range of 3~10, when the low voltage continuously varies between 15V and 50V. The maximum efficiencies are 94.1% in the Buck mode, and 93.6% in the Boost mode. In addition, the corresponding largest efficiency variations between SR and DR operations are 4.8% and 3.4%. This converter is suitable for use as a power interface between the battery stacks and super-capacitors in HESEVs.

  • The conventional way to implement a bidirectional converter with boost/buck has been to use two general purpose PWM ICs with a single supply voltage. In this case, when one direction mode is in operation, the other is disabled and the output of the error amplifier of the disabled IC may be saturated to a maximum value or zero. Therefore, during mode transition, a circuit which can disable the switching operation for a certain time interval is required making it impossible to get a seamless transition. In this paper, the limitations of the conventional 42V/14V bi-directional DC/DC converter implemented with general current mode PWM ICs with a single supply voltage are reviewed and a new current mode PWM controller circuit with a dual voltage system is proposed. The validity of the proposed circuit is investigated through simulation. and experiments.

  • The control method of the bidirectional DC/DC converter for instantaneous regenerative current control is described in this paper. The general method to control the DC/DC converter is the output voltage control. However, the regenerative current cannot be controlled to be constant with this control method. To improve the performance of the conventional control method, the DC-link voltage of the inverter is controlled within the tolerance range by the instantaneous boost and buck operations of the bidirectional DC/DC converter. By the proposed control method, the battery current can be controlled to be constant regardless of the motor speed variation. The improved performance of the DC/DC converter controlled by the proposed control method is verified by the experiment and simulation of the system with the inverter and IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) which is operated by the reduced practical speed profile.
