  • Wetland areas have characteristics of dynamic cycling of materials in relation to land and water. Although having great potential for providing unique natural environments, they are vulnurable to human land use activities and some places are in danger of being eliminated. This study had an objective of investigating vegetation changes in Ilwol reservoir to provide basic information for the preservation and ecological restoration of the wetland area. Wetland vegetation was investigated along with the site conditions which may affect the vegetation development. There were 10 vegetation types with various species composition. Humulus japonicus, Zizania latifolia, Phragmites japonica, Bidens frondosa, Typha orientalis, Scirpus tabernaemontari, Phragmites communis, Persicaria thunbergii were the major wetland plants found at the reservoir area. Precipitation and water level were the elements mostly affecting the distribution of the plants. Phragmites japonica was closest to the water front, followed by Zizania latifolia, Humulus japonicus and Bidens frondosa. Most plant zones were predominated by one or a few species.

  • This study was conducted to predict the rice yield loss and to determine the economic threshold levels for direct-seeding flooded rice cultivation from competition to the most serious weeds, Sagittaria trifolia L. and Bidens frondosa L. The rice yield loss models of S. trifolia and B. frondosa were predicted as Y = 497.0/(1+0.003760x), $R^2$=0.869 and Y = 486.0/(1+0.007612x), $R^2$ = 0.887, respectively. In comparison of the competitiveness represented by parameter ${\beta}$, it was 0.003760 in S. trifolia and 0.007612 in B. frondosa, respectively. Economic thresholds calculated using Cousens' equation was negatively related with the competitiveness of weed. The economic thresholds of S. trifolia and B. frondosa were 7.6 and 3.9 plants per $m^2$, respectively.

  • the phytotoxic effects of volatile substances emitted from the tomato plant (Lycopersicon esculentum) on receptor plants such as Bidens bipinnata, Plantago asiatica, Lactuca sativa, Eragrositis ferruginea and Achyranthes japonica were investigated. Bolatile substances from the leaves inhibited seedling growth of receptor plants in the laboratory tests. The inhibition response varied with the concentration of compounds. To identify the phytotoxic compounds from tomato plant a GC/MS method was employed. Forth compounds, such as trans-2-hexeal, linalool, phenylacetaldehyde, methlsalicylic acid and tetradecanaic acid were identified from the essential oil of tomato plants. The findings suggest that the tomato plant may have allelopathic potential.

  • To confirm the taxonomic identity of taxa described by $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$, H. H. A, a French plant taxonomist, in the serial papers of Decades plantarum novarum based on the collections of Fathers Faurie and Taquet from the Korean peninsula, we examined the numerous references that contained taxonomic opinions about $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}^{\prime}s$ taxa. Among them, 146 taxa were confirmed as conspecific with other existing taxa. Of them, 79 taxa, including Ajuga devestita, were listed as a synonym of only one species. Sixty-seven taxa, including Bidens robertianifolia, were listed as synonyms of two or more species according to taxonomists. Eight taxa, including Aconitum coreanum, were considered illegitimate names because of later homonym, or other problems. Five taxa, including Rhododendron hallaisanense, were treated either as distinct or conspecific taxa depending on taxonomists.
