We report a newly naturalized species of the genus Bidens L. (Asteraceae) in Korea, specifically Bidens subalternans DC. var. subalternans. This naturalized plant was discovered Geumjung-gu in Busan; Gyeongsan-si, Jillyang-eup in Gyeongbuk-do; and in Buk-gu in Daegu. Bidens subalternans var. subalternans is distinguishable from other Bidens in Korea by the following combination of characteristics: an odd-pinnate leaf, deeply lobed, narrow lanceolate, four lobes in the corolla, an oblong achene shape. This taxon is termed 'Wang-do-kka-bi-ba-neul' as a common Korean name based on its large size (in particular, the size of leaf). The key for all taxa of the genus Bidens in Korea is also provided here.
During the systematic study of the genus Bidens L. (Asteraceae) in Korea, we found two specimens collected from Bujeon Plateau, Hamgyungnam-do, which are recognized as a new taxon (B. radiata Thill. var. radiata) for the flora of Korea. The Korean name for this taxon is newly designated as 'Sam-ip-gu-wa-ga-mak-sa-ri'. The close relative of this taxon is B. radiata Thill. var. pinnatifida (Turcz. ex DC.) Kitam., but B. radiata var. radiata can be distinguished from B. radiata var. pinnatifida by having mostly 3-parted and lanceolate lobe of leaf. The key for varieties of B. radiata is given.

Two newly naturalized species were recorded from Incheon (Youngjong-do) and Ulsan. Among them, Bidens polylepis S.F. Blake (Asteraceae) was widespread and was found in the following locations: Unbuk bridge, Unbuk-dong, Jung-gu in Incheon, and Chuiseosan, Banggi-ri, Samnam-myeon as well as a Saemmul mountain cabin on Jaeaksan, Sangbuk-myeon in Ulju-gun, Ulsan. Bidens polylepis can be distinguished from congeneric species by its larger ray-flowers. The Korean name of Bidens polylepis was newly formulated based on the characteristic of its yellow ray-flowers and on the Korean name of the genus Bidens (Asteraceae). The other species, numerous populations of Saponaria officinalis L. (Caryophyllaceae) were found in two areas in Jeotgae village, Unseo-dong, Jung-gu, Incheon. Saponaria officinalis can be distinguished from congeneric species in the family by two features, shallow calyx teeth and a petal with appendages at the base of the blade.

Parasesarma bidens(De Haan, 1835) has been designated as a marine protected species by the Act on conservation and management of marine ecosystems. This crab has been recorded only from Jeju-do and Geomun-do, Republic of Korea. In this study, we describe for the first time the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) sequences of P. bidens. The intra-specific genetic distance among the Korean populations and between the Korean and Chinese populations ranged from 0% to 0.9% and 1.9% to 2.7%, respectively. The inter-specific genetic distances among the four Parasesarma species ranged from 10.9% to 12.8%. The finding of this study will be helpful to better describe P. bidens using COI DNA barcodes and can be used as basic data for their restoration and conservation research.
The experiments were conducted to determine the factors such as light and darkness, phytohormone and seed coat, influencing on seed germination of Bidens tripartita L. and B. frondosa. The seeds of both species were germinated when seed coat was damaged and weakened. $GA_3$ and BA stimulated germination of both species but ABA and IAA had no effect on germination of them, which ranged 50.0% to 80.0%. In B. forndosa, when inner layer of seed coat was removed, germination was highly promoted up to 96.7% compared with 10.0% germination rate in another treatments.
Variation of morphological and physiological traits of 50 Bidens tripartita accessions were studied and the accessions were grouped through cluster analysis based on four major characters; plant type, leaf partition, achene length, days to flowering. Bidens tripartite accessions have shown significant variations in plant type, stem length, days to flowering, leaf shape, leaf partition, chlorophyll content, leaf color, stem color, achene color, achene length and achene shape. Most of Bidens tripartite accessions appeared to have strong dormancy and also photodormancy with some exceptions. Plants could be classified into 5 types from straight(I) to triangle(V), and intermediate diamond type(III) was prevalent. The plant type score has negative correlation with the stem length. None, three, and five part leaved plants were observed and most of them were three or five parted. Leaf partition had negative correlation with achene length and chlorophyll content. Average days to flowering was 108 days in the range of 94~141 days. It had positive correlation with achene length and leaf shape and negative correlation with achene color. Average achene length was 10.0mm and it had positive correlation with achene shape, stem length, days to flowering and leaf shape. It also had negative correlation with leaf color, stem color, achene color, leaf partition. Bidens tripartite accessions could be divided into identifiable six groups from the cluster analysis at the distance 0.06 using Ward's minimum-variance method.
As a part of an ongoing search for natural plants with antioxidant compounds by measuring the radical scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), a total extract of the aerial parts of Bidens frondosa L. (Compositae) was found to show potent antioxidant activity. Subsequent activity-guided fractionation of the methanolic extract led to the isolation of five compounds, quercetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (1), luteolin-7-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (2), 7,8,3',4'-tertrahydroxy-flavanone (3), okanin-4-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (4), and okanin (5). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic studies. Compounds 3-5 were isolated for the first time from this plant. Among them, compounds 3 and 5 showed the significant radical scavenging effects on DPPH, and compounds 3 and 5 also showed the potent riboflavin and xanthine originated superoxide quenching activities.
- Type A: 장타원형이고, 까끄라기 수는 2개(B. parviflora); Type B: 장타원형이고, 까끄라기 수는 3개 이상(B. bipinnata, B. biternata, B. pilosa var. pilosa, B. pilosa var. minor) Type C: 도란형이고, 까끄라기의 수는 2개(B. frondosa, B. radiata var. radiata, B. radiata var. pinnatifida, B. tripartita var. tripartita); Type D: 도란형이고, 까끄라기의 수는 3개 이상(B. cernua).
This study was carried out to evaluate the interaction effect between molinate(S-ethyl N,N-hexamethylene-thiocarbamate) and simetryn(N,N'-diethyl-6-(methythio)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) on weed bioefficacy and rice phytotoxicity in green house and paddy field. Combined application of molinate and simetryn showed synergistic herbicidal effect to Echinochloa crus-galli and additive herbicidal effect to Bidens tripartita, However, it showed synergistic phytotoxicity to rice. Combined application of molinate and simetryn reduced the flooding period desirable for controlling Echinochloa crus-galli by about 2~4days as compared to single application of molinate. It was concluded that the optimum combination of molinate and simetryn was 150g and 9g to 18g a.i./10a, respectively in viewpoint of bioefficacy and phytotoxicity.
