  • As the usage of information resources produced in various media and forms has been increased, the importance of metadata as a tool of information organization to describe the information resources becomes increasingly crucial. The purposes of this study are to analyze and to demonstrate the intellectual structure in the field of metadata through co-word analysis. The data set was collected from the journals which were registered in the Core collection of Web of Science citation database during the period from January 1, 1998 to July 8, 2016. Among them, the bibliographic data from 727 journals was collected using Topic category search with the query word 'metadata'. From 727 journal articles, 410 journals with author keywords were selected and after data preprocessing, 1,137 author keywords were extracted. Finally, a total of 37 final keywords which had more than 6 frequency were selected for analysis. In order to demonstrate the intellectual structure of metadata field, network analysis was conducted. As a result, 2 domains and 9 clusters were derived, and intellectual relations among keywords from metadata field were visualized, and proposed keywords with high global centrality and local centrality. Six clusters from cluster analysis were shown in the map of multidimensional scaling, and the knowledge structure was proposed based on the correlations among each keywords. The results of this study are expected to help to understand the intellectual structure of metadata field through visualization and to guide directions in new approaches of metadata related studies.

  • Application areas of Knowledge Discovery in Database (KDD) have been expanded into many R&D management processes including technology trends analysis, forecasting and evaluation etc. Established research field such as informetrics (or scientometrics) has recently fully utilized techniques or methods of KDD. Various systems have been developed to support works of analyzing large-scale R&D related databases such as patent DB or bibliographic DB by a few researchers or institutions. But extant systems have some problems for korean users to use. Their prices is not cheap, korean language process not available, and user's demands not reflected. To solve these problems, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) developed stand-alone type information analysis system named as KnowledgeMatrix. KnowledgeMatrix system offer various functions to analyze retrieved data set from databases. Knowledge Matrix main operation unit is composed of user-defined lists and matrix generation, cluster analysis, visualization, data pre-processing. • The objective of this study is to catch hold of the problem occurring in the process in which librarians have obtained government publications and to show the method that can construct the rational distribution system of government publications. For this study, total 56 librarians who work for 44 institutes sponsored by central government and 12 institutes sponsored by local government were chosen as the objects of research and questionnaire survey to know how to obtain government publications. How to construct the rational distribution system of government publications is as follows. (1) The exclusive organization to manage overall service for government publications should be established newly or previous similar organization should be reorganized. (2) As reinforcing the law concerning deposit copy, government publications should be distributed obligatorily to all of the depository agency, and the depository library system of government publications should be introduced and managed newly. Especially the management of deposit copy and the depository library system of government publications should be undertaken by the exclusive agency of government publications. (3) Free-government publications should be converted to pay-government publications as much as possible so that everyone can purchase government publications easily. And free-government publications which are difficult to convert to pay-government publications should be distributed according to rational standard by the exclusive agency of government publications. (4) Pay-government publications should be sold by private distribution organization under exclusive agency of government publications. Also printing, editing and pricing of pay-government publications should be done by private distribution organization to compete with general books. (5) In order to promote the sales of pay-government publications, the sales centers of government publications must be established even in city and county. • Scholarly monographs have been a main vehicle for knowledge representation and transfer as well as an important research outcome. University presses have long been considered as the last bastion for scholarly monographs that have low commercial prospect. Until now there has not been a systematic data analysis regarding scholarly monograph production by university presses in Korea. In this paper, we collected bibliographic records of university presses' monograph publications between 1950 and 2015 using the National Library of Korea's online catalog system. A total of 21,015 records were used in the analysis. In particular, for monographs published between 2001 and 2015, we categorized them into scholarly monographs and non-scholarly monographs. University presses' publishing showed sharp increase during the 1990's but is in decline after its peak in 2005. University presses seem to have engaged in publishing more non-scholarly monographs than scholarly monographs by a ratio of 6:4. Large university presses in size seem to produce higher proportions of scholarly monographs than smaller presses. In terms of authoring types, single authorship accounts for the highest proportion and on the increase. However, edited books are losing ground as translated books seem to hold steady. Monographs in social sciences have been published more frequently than any other subject areas as there seem to be significant discrepancies among subject areas in terms of the scholarly monograph proportion.

  • Library standards have been the source of considerable controversy, whereas many problems are involved in developing stardard for university library collections. For evaluation purposes, standards should be precise, quantifiable and measurable. In the United States, however, standards for academic libraries are limited to qualitative statements and principles. Quantitative standards, when given, are ususally related to the number of population in the institution being served, or the prescribed quantitative objectives are often arbitrarily formulated by value judgements. The study in this paper attempts to explain the problems involved in developing quantitative standard for academic library collections. Two problems facing in the formulation of the optimal size of collection are identified. One is the theoretically faulty concept of adequacy of collection to meet the situations of diversity of university libraies, and the other is the difficulties in quantification and measurement, along with the lack of concept of adequacy of collection. However, quantification of adequate size of collection is proved to be useful on the pratical level, even though not valid theoretically. ACRL, Clapp/Jordan and Voigt developed formulas or models for setting the optimal size of a library collection for any particular university library. The main purpose of this study is the analysis of the above formulas. ACRL standard was drawn from obervation and analysis of statistcs in leading library collections. In academic field, this judgement appears to have been based on the assumption that a high-grade institution would be apt to have a good library collection. This study criticizes ACRL standard for its failure to include some determinants of measurements, and points out the limitations of the standard. In contrast. Clapp/Jordan developed a formula rather scientifically based upon bibliographical sources. This is similarly empirical but has the advantage of bringing into play the elements which make universities diverse in nature. Both ACRL and Clapp/Jordan formulas share two major defects. (1) the specific subject needs of the collection are not indiacted directly, and (2) percentage rate of growth is an indicator in measuring the potential utility of a collection. Thus both formulas failed to provide a basis for meaningful evaluation. Voigt further developed a model for determining acquisition rates for currently published materials based on bibliographic technique. Voigt model encourages experimentation with different programs and different allocations of input resources, designed to meet the needs of the library's particular population. Standard for university library collections can be formulated in terms of input(traditional indicator), or additionally, in terms of output(cost-effectiveness). Cost effectiveness is expressed as user satisfaction, ability to provide wanted materials within a reasonable time period. Thus simple quantitative method does not cover all the situations of diversity of university library collections, nor measures the effectiveness of collections. Valid standard could not be established without further research.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine and propose to improve the features of a simple keyword search box and faceted navigations of KOLIS-NET operated by the National Library of Korea. A record group of '2011-2020 (776)' under 'Publication date' facet, out of 3,702 records retrieved from a search of '김훈', were examined. Major findings are as follows: (1) Five facets including 'Format', 'Publication date', 'Subject', 'Language' and 'Country' are used to limit search results only in the first step, and multiple facets cannot be simultaneously used; (2) With 'Publication date' facet formed in the span of ten years, a separate publication year cannot be identified; (3) 'Subject' facet based on KDC limits the results only in broad subject classes without sub-facets; (4) Under 'Format' facet, a special format such as large print texts cannot be identified; (5) Without 'Author' facet, authors cannot be identified; and (6) 'Publication date missing', 'Language missing', and 'Miscellaneous subject' record groups cannot be clicked and displayed, a navigation to-and-fro between a brief list and bibliographic records is not smooth, etc. Therefore an application of multiple facets in all stages of limiting the search result, a construction of sub-facets for 'Publication date' and 'Subject' facets, an accurate description and coding of 'General Material Designation', etc. are suggested to improve KOLIS-NET's faceted navigation.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a scholarly paper recommendation system based on metadata attribute similarity with excellent performance. This study suggests a scholarly paper recommendation method that combines techniques from two sub-fields of Library and Information Science, namely metadata use in Information Organization and co-citation analysis, author bibliographic coupling, co-occurrence frequency, and cosine similarity in Bibliometrics. To conduct experiments, a total of 9,643 paper metadata related to "inequality" and "divide" were collected and refined to derive relative coordinate values between author, keyword, and title attributes using cosine similarity. The study then conducted experiments to select weight conditions and dimension numbers that resulted in a good performance. The results were presented and evaluated by users, and based on this, the study conducted discussions centered on the research questions through reference node and recommendation combination characteristic analysis, conjoint analysis, and results from comparative analysis. Overall, the study showed that the performance was excellent when author-related attributes were used alone or in combination with title-related attributes. If the technique proposed in this study is utilized and a wide range of samples are secured, it could help improve the performance of recommendation techniques not only in the field of literature recommendation in information services but also in various other fields in society.

  • The rapid digitalization has highlighted the importance of identifying and managing online resources. Especially, the need for a systematic identification system for the efficient distribution and preservation of digital content is growing. This study aims to respond to these contemporary demands by investigating the current state of identification systems for online resources and exploring more systematic management and utilization methods through linking these systems with legal deposit. To achieve this, the study surveyed the identification systems and their issuance status for online resources and analyzed prior research related to these online resources. Based on the analysis, the proposed strategies for linking with legal deposit can be summarized into three categories: First, to prioritize and enhance the utilization of legal deposit, strategies are required to strengthen the mutual complementarity of deposit and use, to assign priorities to certain deposits, and to increase the usability of deposited materials. Second, as strategies based on international standard numbers for linking with legal deposit, it is necessary to integrate ISBN and UCI in the deposit process, to link international standard resource numbers with deposit, to interconnect metadata between international standard numbers and UCI, to integrate UCI and ICN, and to introduce automation technology for upgrading the deposit system. Third, to effectively implement the aforementioned strategies, policy support is essential. This includes enhancing the role of the Korean Bibliographic Standards Center, strengthening cooperation with publishers, compensating for deposited materials, and increasing awareness and institutional compensation for the legal deposit system.
