  • We have successfully commercialized a novel optical compensation film, OCB-WV film, for OCB-LCD-TVs which has fast response time and wide viewing angle. The OCB-WV film consists of a 45degree-aligned discotic layer and a high Rth biaxial TAC film, which is suited for a roll-to-roll polarizer manufacturing process. This OCB-WV has brought out the excellent features that OCB intrinsically has, making nextgeneration fast-response LCD-TVs possible and free from image blurring in conjunction with an impulsive driving scheme.

  • A simple method to measure the elastic modulus E and Poisson's ratio v of diamod-like carbon (DLC) films deposited on Si wafer was suggested. Using the anisotropic etching technique of Si we could make the edge of DLC overhang free from constraint of Si substrate. DLC film is chemically so inert that we could not on-serve any surface damage after the etching process. The edge of DLC overhang free from constraint of Si substrate exhibited periodic sinusoidal shape. By measuring the amplitude and the wavelength of the sinu-soidal edge we could determine the stain of the film required to adhere to the substrate. Since the residual stress of film can be determine independently by measurement of the curvature of film-substrate com-posite we could calculated the biaxial elastic modulus E/(1-v) using stress-strain relation of thin films. By comparing the biaxial elastic modulus with the plane-strain modulus E/(1-{{{{ { v}^{2 } }}) measured by nano-in-dentation we could further determine the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio independently. This method was employed to measure the mechanical properties of DLC films deposited by {{{{ { {C }_{6 }H }_{6 } }} rf glow discharge. The was elastic modulus E increased from 94 to 169 GPa as the {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} increased from 127 to 221 V/{{{{ {mTorr }^{1/2 } }} Poisson's ratio was estimated to be abou 0.16∼0.22 in this {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} range. For the {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} less than 127V/{{{{ {mTorr }^{1/2 } }} where the plastic deformation can occur by the substrate etching process however the present method could not be applied.

  • [ $La_2Zr_2O_7$] (LZO) buffer layers were deposited on biaxially textured Ni-W substrates by chemical solution deposition method (CSD). In this study, the effect of $B_2O_3$ addition on texture and surface roughness of LZO films was investigated. The alkoxide-based precursor solution was employed to synthesize the precursor solution of LZO and the solution was coated on biaxially textured Ni-W substrates and subsequently annealed at $900^{\circ}C$ for crystallization. The pure LZO film without $B_2O_3$ addition showed a (222) reflection in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) profile. The intensity of (222) reflection was enhanced and more rough surface was obtained after further repetition of coating. Contrary to this, the LZO film prepared by $B_2O_3$ added precursor solution shows well-developed (400) reflection peak in the XRD profile and excellent biaxial texture (${\Delta}{\theta}=4.3^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}{\phi}=6.8^{\circ}$). The surface roughness of LZO films were also improved by addition of $B_2O_3$ even after multicoating ($R_{rms}{\sim}3.1nm$). It was shown that the LZO film with smooth surface and biaxial texture was grown on the biaxially textured Ni-W substrates with addition of $B_2O_3$ in the precursor solution.

  • A bulge testing system was developed to measure mechanical properties of thin film materials. A bulge pressure test system for pressurizing the bulge window of the film and a micro out-of-plane ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometric) system for measuring deflection of the film were included in the testing system developed. For the out-of-plane ESPI system, whole field speckle fringe pattern, corresponding to the out-of-plane deflection of the bulged film, was 3-dimensionally visualized using 4-bucket phase shifting algorithm and least square phase unwrapping algorithm. The bulge pressure for loading and unloading was controlled at a constant rate. From the pressure-deflection curve measured by this testing system, ain-plane stress-strain curve could be determined. In this study, elastic modulus of an electrolytic copper film 18 ${\mu}m$ was determined. The modulus was calculated from determining the plain-strain biaxial elastic modulus at the respective unloading slopes of the stress-strain curve and for the Poisson's ratio of 0.34.

  • The Cu sheets were selected for the substrate of the superconductor films. Pure Cu sheets with the thickness of 50${\mu}$m were fabricated using hot and cold rolling. The Cu sheets were heat treated to induce the biaxial texturing. The z-axis and x-y plane texturing of Cu sheets heat treated at different conditions were analyzed using XRD and a best heat treatment condition for the texturing was selected. ZrO$_2$ film was dip coated on Cu sheets heat treated at the best condition to prevent possible reaction between Cu sheets and YBCO superconductors, to reduce possible cracking due to thermal expansion mismatch and to decrease the lattice mismatch for biaxial texturing. The texturing of the oxide buffer layers were also studied.

  • ITO thin film was deposited on PC substrate in Facing Targets Sputtering (FTS) system with various sputtering conditions. After it is applied to external bending force, we investigated how change the surface and electrical property of as-deposited ITO thin film. As the L(face-plate distance) of substrate decreases, it found that the maximum crack density is increasing at the center position and decreasing crack density as goes to the edge. So to apply same curvature (r) and bending force to PC substrate with ITO thin film, we fixed the L that is equal to curvature radius (2r). Before bending test, ITO thin films that deposited in the input current of 0.4 A and thickness of 200 nm already had biaxial tensile failure because of each different CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) and Others had been shown no bending or crack. After bending test, all samples had been shown cracks at about 200 times and as increasing the crack density, resistivity increased.

  • The annealing temperature effect of transparent conducting oxide film grown on glass substrate for solar cell application was studied in this paper. Using pulsed DC magnetron sputtering with 1 at% Al-doped ZnO target, TCO films were deposited on coming 7059 glass at room temperature. Al:ZnO thin films were annealed at 200, 400, Al $600^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and annealing resulted in lower biaxial compressive stress of about 1GPa and increased average crystallite size in all films. The as-grown film shows the resistivity of $1{\times}10^{-2}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and transmittance under 80%, whereas the electrical and optical properties of film annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ are enhanced up to $5{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and 85%, respectively.

  • The elastic modulus and the structural evolution were examined with the film thickness in polymeric, hard, graphitic diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. The DLC films used in the present study were prepared by radio frequency plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (r.f.-PACVD) from $C_6H_6\;and\;CH_4$ gas. Elastic modulus of very thin DLC film was measured by free overhang method. This method has an advantage over the other methods. Because the substrate was removed by etching technique, the measured value is not affected by the mechanical property of the substrate. The structural evolution was investigated by the G-peak position of the Raman spectrum. The polymeric and graphitic films exhibited the decreased elastic modulus with decreasing film thickness. In polymeric films, the reason was that more polymeric film had been deposited in the initial stage of the film growth and in graphitic film more graphic films which had been deposited in the initial stage decreased the elastic modulus. The G-peak position of the Raman spectrum confirmed this result. On the other hand, the hard film showed the constant elastic modulus regardless to the film thickness. The structural change was not observed in this range of the film thickness.
