Using theoretical analysis based on Landau theory, it is shown that only five phenomenological parameters are necessary to describe the twelve bulk elastic constants of a biaxial nematic phase. Further, a simple method for determining the values of these five parameters experimentally is given. Comparison with the values of the well-known splay, twist, and bend elastic constants of the uniaial nematic is made.

The conventional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have been using optically uniaxial liquid crystal (LC) medium and this often causes a significant image change at oblique viewing angles. We simulated the viewing angle properties of the biaxial nematic (N_b) phase of a bent-core liquid crystal (BLC) and compared the results with the vertically aligned (VA)- and the in-plane switching (IPS)-LCDs. The N_b phase of the BLC showed a smaller transmittance at the dark state as well as a greater contrast ratio at wide viewing angle. The viewing angle property of the N_b-mode without any compensation film was slightly superior to the IPS-mode with the compensation films eliminating the decross of the polarizers at oblique viewing angle.

Novel X-shaped molecules containing perfluoroalkyl alkanes as a side chain have been synthesized and characterized. The properties of mesophases were investigated by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and electro-optical measurements.

New liquid crystalline Y-shaped molecules containing 1,3,4-oxadizoles have been synthesized with variation of terminal groups (R = H, $OCH_3$ or $OC_8H_{17}$). The structures of obtained compounds were identified by FT/IR and NMR spectrometry, and their thermal and liquid crystalline properties were investigated by DSC and polarizing optical microscope.

Banana-shaped molecules were synthesized introducing ester linking group into mesogenic unit, varying the central unit with 1,6-, 2,3-naphthylenes, and introducing the hexyloxy group as the terminal flexible unit. The properties of the compounds were characterized by FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, DSC, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry.
