Inonotus obliquus could be isolated from Betula platyphylla var. japonica with diameter in the range of 6$\sim$13 cm that artificially inoculated by the fungus. The diameter and/or inoculation point of tree did not show any significant relationships with the infection rate of the fungus. Inonotus obliquus showed rapid growth on vertical direction of the infected tree while the growth was quite low on radial direction. The isolated fungus from the infected tree did not show vegetative incompatibility with the original fungus used for inoculation. We could isolate 8 contaminants from the inoculated area; Trichoderma reesei, T. atroviride, Cryptococcus neoformans, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium sp. and 3 unknown species.

Populus euramericana and Betula platyphylla var. japonica have been identified as possible species for use for phytoremediation of landfills. To identify the capacity of waste leachate absorption in Populus euramericana and Betula platyphylla var, japonica, four different treatments were applied to these seedlings: leachate solution (100% leachate), 50% dilution (50% leachate: 50% water, v/v) and 25% dilution (25% leachate: 75% water, v/v) were applied to these two species. After the experiment, concentrations of heavy metals in tree biomass were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma emission spectrometer (ICP). These two species can take up the hazardous parts of the leachate such as heavy metals. Especially, these species showed good absorption capacity of Al, Cr, and Fe elements. The result of this study suggested that these two species can take up the toxic materials through their roots and transport them to stems or leaves.
In woody plant germplasms, using prefrozen dormant buds for materials is one way to achieve successful cryopreservation. The protocol of cryopreservation for White birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica) winter vegetative buds is the following. First, the branches of White birch were collected in January 20, when the vegetative buds were still in a state of quiescence. The winter buds with about 5㎜ of xylem tissue were removed from the branches. They were dehydrated to moisture contents about 44% by air dry treatment. The buds were prefrozen, with the temperature being decreased by 5∼-20$\^{C}$ and then transfered to the LN(liquid nitrogen) maintained below -l96$\^{C}$. After cryopreservation, the vegetative buds were rapidly thawed in a water bath at 40$\pm$5$\^{C}$. In this case, the cell survival rate of samples was about 86%. After sterilization, buds were then cultured on MS medium. These results demonstrate the feasibility for cryopreservation of winter vegetation buds of Betula platyphylla var. japonica.
The sap of the white birch is one of the most widely used herbal medicines to treat gastrointestinal tract, jaundice, and various periodontal diseases. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of white birch sap on in vivo immune agents in mice. The treatment of white birch sap on the forced swimming test has been used as a screening model for new immune enhancement agents. The hematological examination was significantly different in neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte counts between treatment and control groups. Moreover the white birch sap changed the phagocytic index, immobility duration time, and leukocyte counts in mice.
The objective of this study was to develop a management strategy for the recovery of carbon storage capacity of abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation area. For the purpose, the biomass and stand carbon storage over time after the forest rehabilitation by tree type for Betula platyphylla, Pinus densiflora, and Alnus hirsuta trees which are major tree species widely planted for the forest rehabilitation in the abandoned coal mine were calculated, and compared them with general forest. The carbon storage in abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation areas was lower than that in general forests, and based on tree species, Pinus densiflora stored 48.9%, Alnus hirsuta 41.1%, and Betula platyphylla 27.0%. This low carbon storage is thought to be caused by poor growth because soil chemical properties, such as low TOC and total nitrogen content, in the soil of abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation areas, were adverse to vegetation growth compared to those in general forests. DBH, stand biomass, and stand carbon storage tended to increase after forest rehabilitation over time, whereas stand density decreased. Stand' biomass and carbon storage increased as DBH and stand density increased, but there was a negative correlation between stand density and DBH. Therefore, after forest rehabilitation, growth status should be monitored, an appropriate growth space for trees should be maintained by thinning and pruning, and the soil chemical properties such as fertilization must be managed. It is expected that the carbon storage capacity the forest rehabilitation area could be restored to a level similar to that of general forests.
The present study reports the protective properties of a total methanol extract of B. platyphylla var. japonica against ultraviolet (UV)-C irradiation. Pretreatment of Chinese hamster fibroblast (V79-4) cells with a total methanol extract significantly increased cell survival following $300\;J/m^2$ of UV-C irradiation. The total methanol extract was further fractionated into 5 fractions: n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, n-butanol and water fractions. Among these fractions, B. platyphylla var. japonica ethylacetate, butanol and water fractions showed significant protective effects against the cellular damage induced by UV-C irradiation. In order to elucidate the mechanism underlying this protective effect, DPPH (Editor note: abbreviations should be spelled out at first use.) radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity were measured. Significant radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities were observed for the ethylacetate fraction. In summary, the present data demonstrate that an extract of B. platyphylla var. japonica has a significant protective effect against UV-C irradiation. The underlying mechanism of this protective effect may involve radical scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation by the B. platyphylla var. japonica extract.
This study was carried out to improve the method of tapping sap from Betula platyphylla Sukatschev, Betula costata Trautv., Betula schmidtii Regel, Betula davurica Pallas, Betula ermanii Cham, Acer mono Maxim and Acer pseudo-sieboldianum Kom and to use it to natural drinks. The mal or results are as follows: 1. It is no difference of the amount of sap by tapping methods and species of trees. The larger D.B.H. is, the more amount of sap can be gotten. So we thought that the best tapping method is hole-drilling to prevent trees from damage. 2. Sap contains sugars and mineral materials. Birches have glucose and fructose, much more mineral materials than maples. Sugar of maples is mainly sucrose. 3. We assume that mineral materials of birches are effective to urination, to make a stong dody and sucrose of maples is effective to recover from one's fatigue by controlling the blood sugar. 4. In vacuum packing after sterilizing the sap in low temperature, it could be stored more 1 year. So, it is possible that sap will be commercialized.
Radial immunodiffusion, rocket immunoelectrophoresis, and Boyden procedure have been employed as quantitative analysis of pollen proteins in a systematic investigation of selected amentiferous plant taxa. Data presented here are continued and supplementary to the previous qualitative analysis of immunoprecipitin systems for the same purpose. Although the number of taxa tested has been limited, the serological evidence indicates that the Betulaceae has the greatest similarity to the Fagaceae, next to the Juglandaceae, the least to the Salicaceae, when antisera against Alnus hirsuta and Betula platyphylla var. japonica were used for tests. Within the Betulaceae Alnus and Betula show greatly similar affinities together, but less similar to the rest of genera: Carpinus, Carya and Corylus. When antisera against Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, and Q. glauca were used for tests, the following decreasing order to serological affinities was obtained: Quercus Alnus, Betula Carpinus, Carya, Corylus Juglans, Pterocarya Populus. Overall serological data come closer to supportint the classification systems of Cronquist, Takhtajan, and Hutchinson; but less of Thorne and Bessey. In addition this investigation indicated that pollen, with its high protein content, provided an excellent source of extractable antigens for serosystematic researches.
A review of taxonomic treatments of the amentiferous plant taxa reveals diverse classification. It appears to be necessary to investigate new characteristics and attempt to determine the significance of these characteristics in terms of amentiferous systematics. Serological techniques have been empolyed in a systematic investigation of selected taxa of the Amentiferae: Betulaceae, Fagaceae, Juglandaceae, Myricaceae, and Salicaceae. Data by qualitative analysis of pollen proteins, double immunodiffusion and conventional immunoelectrophoresis, have proved to be valuable in delimitation of taxa tested. When the antisera against Alnus hirsuta, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, Q. glauca were tested; Alnus and Betula have the greatest protein similarity to one another; and next to the rest of betulaceous genera. Relatively strong protein similarity obtained with most representatives of Quercus and Fagus when reacted with antisera against Alnus and Betula is very much in contrast to the weak protein similarity obtained for the genera of Juglandaceae, Myricaceae, particularly of Salicaceae Tested with the same antisera. When Quercus antisera were used for various genera, the weakest protein similarity was obtained with Populus.
