  • A TEM study on proeutectoid ${\alpha}$ reaction at sub-eutectoid temperatures has been made in hypoeutectoid Ti-3.gw/o Co and Ti-5.2w/o Fe alloys. Widmanstatten ${\alpha}$ plates were formed in both alloys within the ${\beta}$ matrix with some modification of degenerate forms. These degenerate plates were formed by the sympathetic nucleation of ${\alpha}$ plates at ${\alpha}:{\beta}$ interphase boundaries. Three types of sympathetic nucleation, i.e., edge-to-edge, face-to-edge, face-to-face, were found in both alloys. The edge-to-edge sympathetically nucleated crystals formed a low-angle boundary between two crystals. The ${\alpha}:{\beta}$ interphase boundaries were found to be partially coherent interfaces which consist of regularly spaced misfit dislocations. The growth of these interphase boundaries were accomplished by the lateral movement of growth ledges. The intersection points of two ${\alpha}$ plates or the low angle boundaries which had formed by edge-to-edge sympathetic nucleation played a role as the potential sources of growth ledges during the growth of plate. The interfacial structures and the spatial morphologies of the degenerate proeutectoid ${\alpha}$ plates would be expected to influence the nucleation and growth of the succeeding eutectoid decomposition process.

  • Nanotubular structure formation on the Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-Ta alloy surfaces by electrochemical methods has been studied using the anodizing method. A nanotube layer was formed on Ti alloys in 1.0 M $H_3PO_4$ electrolyte with small additions of $F^-$ ions. The nanotube nucleation and growth of the ${\alpha}$-phase and ${\beta}$-phase appeared differently, and showed different morphology for Cp-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-Ta alloys. In the ${\alpha}$-phase of Cp-Ti and martensite ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and in the ${\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ and ${\beta}$-phase of the Ti-Ta alloy, the nanotube showed a clearly highly ordered $TiO_2$ layer. In the case of the Ti-Ta alloy, the pore size of the nanotube was smaller than that of the Cp-Ti due to the ${\beta}$-stabilizing Ta element. In the case of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the ${\alpha}$-phase showed a stable porous structure; the ${\beta}$-phase was dissolved entirely. The nanotube with two-size scale and high order showed itself on Ti-Ta alloys with increasing Ta content.

  • Titanum and its alloys have been used as the important materials of eyewear frame because of its light weight, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. This study investigated the characteristics of P-Ti and ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$-Ti alloys in accordance with joining conditions by electric resistance brazing. Hardness of P-Ti and ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$-Ti has been reduced because of an increase of grain size by the growth of brazing current. Especially, hardness reduction was largely appeared in P-Ti than ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$-Ti. It was considered that a little decrease of hardness in ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$-Ti was due to formation of detailed ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$ lamella.

  • Ta and Hf added Ti-l5Sn-4Nb alloys without V and Al elements for biomaterial were melted by arc furnace in response to recent concerns about the long term safety of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. All specimens were homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ and solution treatment was performed at $812^{\circ}C$ and aging treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. The microstructure and mechanical properties were analysed by optical micrograph, hardness tester and instron. Ti-l5Sn-4Nb system alloys showed widmanstatten microstructure which is typical microstructure in $\alpha$$\beta$ type Ti alloys. The Ti-l5Sn-4Nb-2Hf and Ti-l5Sn-4Nb-2Ta alloys showed better hardness and tensile strength compared with Ti-6Al-4V. The result of XPS analysis, Ti-l5Sn-4Nb alloy in air atmosphere consisted of $TiO_2$, SnO and NbO.

  • Electrochemical properties of Ti-30Ta-$(3{\sim}15)$Nb alloys coated by HA/Ti compound layer have been studied by various electrochemical method. Ti-30Ta binary alloys contained 3, 7, 10, and 15 wt% Nb contents were manufactured by the vacuum furnace system. The specimens were homogenized for 24 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The samples were cut and polished for corrosion test and coating. It was coated with HA/Ti compound layer by magnetron sputter. The HA/Ti non-coated and coated morphology of Ti alloy were analyzed by x-ray diffractometer(XRD) and filed emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM). The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiodynamic method in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The homoginazed Ti-30Ta-$(3{\sim}15wt%$)Nb alloys showed the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase, and ${\beta}$ phase peak was predominantly appeared with increasing Nb content. The microstructure of Ti alloy was transformed from needle-like structure to equiaxed structure as Nb content increased. HA/Ti composite surface showed uniform coating layer with 750 nm thickness. The corrosion resistance of HA/Ti composite coated Ti-alloys were higher than those of the non-coated samples in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Especially, corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-Nb system increased as Nb content increased.

  • In order to investigate nanotube morphology change of Ti-6Al-4V alloys by heat treatments, the Ti-6Al-4V alloys were used in this study. In non-treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy case, nanotubes only exhibited at ${\alpha}$ phase region with dissolved V-oxide area of ${\beta}$ phase. However, in Ti-6Al-4V alloy at $800^{\circ}C$ WQ case, nanotubes exhibited at both ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phase region. Electrochemical corrosion studies showed that the nanotubular alloy at $800^{\circ}C$WQ possesses slightly higher corrosion resistance than non-treated nanotubular alloy.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate corrosion characteristics of Ti-xTa alloys with Ta contents. Ti-xTa alloys used as samples (x=30, 40%) were arc-melted under argon atmosphere of 99.9% purity. Ti-xTa alloys were homogenized for 12hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ and then water quenched. The surface characteristics of Ti-xTa alloys were investigated using optical microscopy (OM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The anodic corrosion behaviors of the specimens were examined through potentiodynamic, potentiostatic and galvanostatic test in 0.9 % NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. After corrosion test, the surface characteristics of Ti-xTa alloys were investigated using OM. The microstructure of Ti-Ta alloy showed the beta structure with Ta content. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloy was improved by increasing Ta content and the corrosion morphology of Ti-Ta alloy showed that the site attacked by chloride ion decreased from the active to passive region with Ta content. Potential of Ti-40Ta alloy increased as time increased, whereas, current density of Ti-40Ta alloy decreased as time increased compared to Ti-30 alloy.

  • Directional solidification of Al-Ti peritetic alloys was carried out using Upward Continuous Casting Process. The morphology of a solid-liquid interface and solidification microstructures were investigated under various crystal growing conditions. The experimental results were compared with those attained by the Bridgman method. The cell spacing of the Al-Ti peritetic alloys and the primary dendrite arm spacing of the Al-Ti peritetic alloys decreased with an increase in pulling speed. The primary ${\beta}$ phase of the Al-Cr and Al-Ti peritectic alloys did not appear in solidification microstructures because of the depleted solute contents in the melt ahead of the solid-liquid interface.

  • In the present study, microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Ti-Fe-Sn ultrafine eutectic alloys have been investigated. Ultrafine eutectic microstructure consisting of a mixture of ${\beta}$-Ti solid solution and TiFe intermetallic compound homogeneously formed in $(Ti_{70.5}Fe_{29.5})_{100-x}Sn_x$ alloys with x = 0, 1 and 3. Addition of Sn is effective to modify the eutectic colony into the spherical shape with decreasing the lamellar spacing and colony size. This results in enhancing the macroscopic plasticity up to 3.1% of the Ti-Fe-Sn ultrafine eutectic alloys.
