  • Among the various activated carbons available in the market, an optimum mixing method of two kind activated carbons with different adsorbability was investigated in this study. The representative adsorption behaviors of the activated carbon are the adsorption isotherm plots obtained by the BET-Analysis which suggests also basic information of adsorption filter design. So we have tested three cases with certifications, the one was the extreme case of coal cokes based activated carbon with highest BET-model and coconut-shell based activated carbon with the lowest Langmuir-model, the other middle and cross case were applied this method to two kinds of activated carbons with higher and lower specific surface areas which are not available but supplied as research samples by an authority of an Korean Research Institute.

  • Pine bark was carbonized by using a small-scale experimental kiln and three different types of large-scale kilns (simple (400-$500^{\circ}C$), improved (600-$700^{\circ}C$) and special kiln (800-$1,000^{\circ}C$). The physical properties and pore structures of the bark charcoals prepared were analyzed. When the bark was carbonized at various temperatures ranging from 500 to $900^{\circ}C$in the presence of nitrogen, carbonization yield decreased rapidly with increasing carbonization temperature and it remained constant from 700 to $900^{\circ}C$. The carbonization yield of the bark was 16 - 18% higher than that of pine wood. The BET specific surface areas and iodine values increased with a decrease in carbonization yield. The BET specific surface areas of the bark charcoals reached about 400 -$500m^2/g$ for carbonization yield of 32-40%. The pine wood charcoal prepared at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 min resulted in a more microporous structure, whereas the bark charcoal prepared at the same condition was more mesoporous. The carbonization yields and physical properties such as iodine values and BET specific surface areas of bark charcoals prepared by using the large-scale kilns were very similar to those of the small-scale kiln. The results indicated that the pine bark could be used as starting material to produce good quality charcoal having a large specific surface area and a high carbonization yield.

  • In the present work, the thrust and torque of multicopter propellers in hovering are predicted based on BET method. The geometry information of the propellers is obtained using a three dimensional scanner and the airfoil section is extracted using CATIA. EDISON CFD is adopted to calculate the drag and lift of airfoil at a given geometry and flow conditions and then thrust is calculated with respect to a given RPMs based on BET. Two simulations with laminar and turbulent flows are considered. The predicted value is compared with the performance data from the Product Company and results from JavaProp software, which is used in the design and prediction of propellers. In the case of a 9-inch propeller, the thrust from the product company is corresponding to the results between the laminar and turbulent flow conditions. In the 16-inch case, the predicted thrust at turbulent flow conditions conformed well with reference one. The predicted torque shows a big difference with the reference data.

  • It was studied to utilize wasted food as a starting material to produce for activated carbon. The wasted food was chemically activated with zinc chloride. Experiments were carried out at different chemical ratios(activating agent/wasted foods), activation temperatures, and activation time. The activated products were characterized by measuring the iodine and methylene blue number, the BET surface area, the pore volume, the micropore ratio, the pore diameter, the yields and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). For the products activated by impregnation ratio of 1.0 of ZnCl$_2$ at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 60 min in a rotary kiln reactor had iodine number of 480 mg/g, methylene blue number of 95 mL/g, BET surface area of 410 m$^2$/g, pore volume of 0.248 cm$^3$/g, and average pore diameter of 2.43 nm, respectively. The activated carbon obtained had the contribution of micropore area of 70.7% to the total pore area and micropore volume of 53.2% to the total pore volume.

  • While the use of battery-powered embedded systems has been rapidly increasing, the current level of battery technology has not kept up with the drastic increase in power consumption by the system. In order to prolong system usage time, the battery size needs to be increased. The amounts of power consumption by embedded systems are determined by their hardware configuration and software for manipulating hardware resources. In spite of that, the hardware provides features for lowering power consumption, if those cannot be utilized efficiently by software including operating system, reduction in power consumption is not optimized. In this paper, we propose a BET(Break Even Time)-based scheduling method using task partition to reduce power consumption of multimedia applications in a mobile embedded system environment.

  • Colloid Formation and Migration (CFM) project is being carried out within the Grimsel Test Site (GTS) Phase Ⅵ. Since 2008, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has joined CFM to investigate the behavior of colloid-facilitated radionuclide transport in a generic Underground Research Laboratory (URL). The CFM project includes a long-term in-situ test (LIT) and an in-rock bentonite erosion test (i-BET) to assess the in-situ colloid-facilitated radionuclide transport through the bentonite erosion in the natural flow field. In the LIT experiment, radionuclide-containing compacted bentonite was equipped with a triple-packer system and then positioned at the borehole in the shear zone. It was observed that colloid transport was limited owing to the low swelling pressure and low hydraulic conductivity. Therefore, a postmortem analysis is being conducted to estimate the partial migration and diffusion of radionuclides. The i-BET experiment, that focuses more on bentonite erosion, was newly designed to assess colloid formation in another flow field. The i-BET experiment started with the placement of compacted bentonite rings in the double-packer system, and the hydraulic parameters and bentonite erosion have been monitored since December 2018.

  • Using a pinus koraiensis and pinus rigida which are normally being discarded in South Korea, the optimal condition of producing charcoals has been studied to develop activated carbons which can be recycled as a higher value-added product. A study on manufacture of activated carbons from a discarded timber consists of two processes, the production process of charcoals from a discarded timber by low temperature pyrolysis process and the production process of activated carbons from the charcoals by chemical activation reaction. This study deals with the production process of charcoals from a discarded timber by low temperature pyrolysis process. As a results of experiment, it was investigated that charcoals produced through drying at $150^{\circ}C$ for 6hr and pyrolysis process at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr had the highest values in physical properties such as iodine number and BET surface area. Furthermore, through observing SEM images, the maximum development of porosity had been founded in this condition. It was confirmed that values of physical properties on using a pinus koraiensis are superior to the ones when using a pinus rigida. When charcoals were produced from a pinus koraiensis in this condition, BET surface area was approx. $640m^2/g$.

  • In this study, activated carbon fabric was prepared from a cellulose-based polymer (viscose rayon) via a combination of physical and chemical activation (mixed activation) processes by means of $CO_2$ as a gasifying agent and surface and adsorption properties were evaluated. Experiments were performed to investigate the consequence of activation temperature (750, 800, 850 and $925^{\circ}C$), activation time (15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes) and $CO_2$ flow rate (100, 200, 300 and 400 mL/min) on the surface and adsorption properties of ACF. The nitrogen adsorption isotherm at 77 K was measured and used for the determination of surface area, total pore volume, micropore volume, mesopore volume and pore size distribution using BET, t-plot, DR, BJH and DFT methods, respectively. It was observed that BET surface area and TPV increase with rising activation temperature and time due to the formation of new pores and the alteration of micropores into mesopores. It was also found that activation temperature dominantly affects the surface properties of ACF. The adsorption of iodine and $CCl_4$ onto ACF was investigated and both were found to correlate with surface area.

  • A total of twenty-four multiparous sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) and their litters were used in this 21-day experimental trial. Based on their body weight, sows were randomly allocated into one of three treatments with eight replicates. The dietary betaine supplementation contained three levels: (i) CON (Basal diet + 0% Bet), (ii) Bet 0.05% (CON + 0.05% Betaine), and (iii) Bet 0.15% (CON + 0.15% Betaine). The supplementation of betaine had no effect (p > 0.05) on body weight and feed intake of lactating sow. Moreover, no significant response was observed on backfat thickness, body condition score, and weaning of the estrus interval with the dietary supplementation of betaine. In addition, the litter weaning weight, litter weight gain, average litter daily gain, and survivability rate at birth showed no significant difference with the dietary betaine supplementation of the sow diet. Fecal scores of the lactating sows and suckling piglets were not affected (p > 0.05) with the dietary betaine supplementation compared with the control diet during the experimental periods. The findings of this study showed that betaine supplementation does not boost growth performance, feed intake, body conditions, and fecal score in lactating sows and suckling piglets fed a corn-soybean meal-based diet.
