  • Movie ratings are crucial for recommendation engines that track the behavior of all users and utilize the information to suggest items the users might like. It is intuitively appealing that information about the viewing preferences in terms of movie genres is sufficient for predicting a genre of an unlabeled movie. In order to predict movie genres, we treat ratings as a feature vector, apply a Bernoulli event model to estimate the likelihood of a movie being assigned a certain genre, and evaluate the posterior probability of the genre of a given movie by using the Bayes rule. The goal of the proposed technique is to efficiently use movie ratings for the task of predicting movie genres. In our approach, we attempted to answer the question: "Given the set of users who watched a movie, is it possible to predict the genre of a movie on the basis of its ratings?" The simulation results with MovieLens 1M data demonstrated the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed technique, achieving an 83.8% prediction rate for exact prediction and 84.8% when including correlated genres.

  • In this paper, the investigation about the elevation control and the formation of the free surface of magnetic fluids is carried out theoretically and experimentally on the basis of magnetic fluids is carried out theoretically and experimentally on the basis of Rosensweig' Ferrohydrodynamic Bernoulli Equation. Governing equations of magnetic fields are solved using the concept of vector potential. While applied magnetic fields are induced by 4$\times$4 electromagnet located under the magnetic fluid, the fee surface of the magnetic fluid is formed the balance of surface force, gravity, pressure difference, magnetic normal pressure and magnetic body force. The results of numerical simulation and experiment show the formation of the free surface of the magnetic fluid. Using PID control, an experiment for the elevation control of the free surface of magnetic fluids is performed.

  • We use both theoretical analysis and simulations to study the impact of crosspoint-queued (CQ) buffer size on CQ switch throughput and delay performance under different traffic models, input loads, and scheduling algorithms. In this paper, we present the following. 1) We prove the stability of CQ switch using any work-conserving scheduling algorithm. 2) We present an exact closed-form formula for the CQ switch throughput and a non-closed-form but convergent formula for its delay using static non-work-conserving random scheduling algorithms with any given buffer size under independent Bernoulli traffic. 3) We show that the above results can serve as a conservative guide on deciding the required buffer size in pure CQ switches using work-conserving algorithms such as the random scheduling, under independent Bernoulli traffic. 4) Furthermore, our simulation results under real-trace traffic show that simple round-robin and random work-conserving algorithms can achieve quite good throughput and delay performance with a feasible crosspoint buffer size. Our work reveals the impact of buffer size on the CQ switch performance and provides a theoretical guide on designing the buffer size in pure CQ switch, which is an important step toward building ultra-high-speed switch fabrics.

  • Multiple target tracking mainly focuses on tracking unknown number of targets in the complex environment of clutter and missed detection. The generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli (GLMB) filter has been shown to be an effective approach and attracted extensive attention. However, in the scenarios where the clutter rate is high or measurement-outliers often occur, the performance of the GLMB filter will significantly decline due to the Gaussian-based likelihood function is sensitive to clutter. To solve this problem, this paper presents a robust GLMB filter and smoother to improve the tracking performance in the scenarios with high clutter rate, low detection probability, and measurement-outliers. Firstly, a Student-T distribution variational Bayesian (TDVB) filtering technology is employed to update targets' states. Then, The likelihood weight in the tracking process is deduced again. Finally, a trajectory smoothing method is proposed to improve the integrative tracking performance. The proposed method are compared with recent multiple target tracking filters, and the simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively improve tracking accuracy in the scenarios with high clutter rate, low detection rate and measurement-outliers. • An ATM switch must deal with various kinds of input sources having different traffic characteristics and it must guarantee very small value of cel loss probability, about 10$^{8}$ -10$^{12}$ , to deal with loss-sensitive traffics. In order to estimate such a rate event probability with simulation procedure, a variance reduction technique is essential for obtaining an appropriate level of precision with reduced cost. In this paper, we propose a hybrid simulation technique to achieve reduction of variance of cell loss probability estimator, where hybrid means the combination of analytical method and simulation procedure. A discrete time queueing model with multiple input sources and a finite shared buffer is considered, where the arrival process at an input source and a finite shared buffer is considered, where the arrival process at an input source is governed by an Interrupted Bernoulli Process and the service rate is constant. We deal with heterogeneous input sources as well as homogeneous case. The performance of the proposed hybrid simulation estimator is compared with those of the raw simulation estimator and the importance sampling estimator in terms of variance reduction ratios.

  • Since traditional derivative-based optimization for noisy simulation shows bad performance, evolutionary algorithms are considered as substitutes. Especially in case when outputs are binary, more simulation trials are needed to get near-optimal solution since the outputs are discrete and have high and heterogeneous variance. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm called SARAGA which adopts dynamic resampling and fitness approximation using surrogate. SARAGA reduces unnecessary numbers of expensive simulations to estimate success probabilities estimated from binary simulation outputs. SARAGA allocates number of samples to each solution dynamically and sometimes approximates the fitness without additional expensive experiments. Experimental results show that this novel approach is effective and proper hyper parameter choice of surrogate and resampling can improve the performance of algorithm.

  • Free vibration analysis for continuous bridge under any number of vehicles is conducted in this paper. Calculation strategy for natural frequency and mode shape is proposed based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and numerical assembly method. Firstly, a half-car planar model is adopted; equations of motion and displacement functions for bridge and vehicle are established, respectively. Secondly, the undermined coefficient matrices for wheels, vehicles, intermediate support, left-end support and right-end support are derived. Then, the numerical assembly technique for conventional finite element method is adopted to construct the overall matrix of coefficients for whole system. Finally, natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are determined based on iterative method and overall matrix solution. Numerical simulation is presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results reveal that the solutions of present method are exact ones. Natural frequencies and associate modal shapes of continuous bridge under different conditions of vehicles are investigated. The influences of vehicle parameters on natural frequencies are also demonstrated.

  • The paper presents a stability analysis of uniform Timoshenko beams resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The two-parameter elastic foundations were considered as a shearing layer and Winkler springs in soil models. Governing equations of motion were derived using the Hamilton's principle and finite element analysis was performed and the eigenvalues were obtained for the stability analysis. The numerical results for the buckling stability of beams under axial forces are demonstrated and compared with the exact or available confirmed solutions. Finally, several examples were given for Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams with various boundary conditions.

  • The dynamic and sensing performances of nanomechanical resonators with their different boundary conditions are studied based on surface elasticity-based modeling and simulation. Specifically, the effect of surface stress is included in Euler-Bernoulli beam model for different boundary conditions. It is shown that the surface effect on the intrinsic elastic property of nanowire is independent of boundary conditions, while these boundary conditions affect the frequency behavior of nanowire resonator. The detection sensitivity of nanowire resonator is remarkably found to depend on the boundary conditions such that double-clamping boundary condition results in the higher mass sensitivity of the resonator in comparison with simple-support or cantilever boundary condition. Furthermore, we show that the frequency shift of nanowire resonator due to mass adsorption is determined by its length, whereas the frequency shift is almost independent of its thickness. This study enables a design principle providing an insight into how the dynamic and sensing performances of nanomechanical resonator is determined and tuned.
