  • A series of mono- and 1,1'-bis(heteroaryl)-substituted ferrocenes were prepared by employing Frielander reaction of acetyl- and 1,1'-diacetylferrocene with a series of o-aminoaldehydes. Reactions of 1,1'-diacetylferrocene with two equivalents of 1-aminonaphthalene-2-carbaldehyde and 8-aminoquinoline-7-carbaldehyde afforded a mixture of mono- and 1,1'-bis(heteroaryl)-substituted ferrocenes in a ratio of 1 : 3.1 - 3.8, while the reaction with 4-aminoacridine-3-carbaldehyde did not provide any characterizable product presumably due to the redox instability of the product induced by low reduction potential of benzo[b]-1,10-phenanthroline. Structural and optical properties of the compounds prepared were described.

  • By using the liquid -phase-deposition (LPD) process, which has a potetnial of preparing organic inorganic composite materials, samples doped with benzo[f]quinoline (BfQ)into silica thia films wre prepared. We observed the fluorescene and fluorescene excitation spectra of the samples, as well as the fluorescence lifetimes and time-resoluved fluorescence spectra. The comparison of thefluorescence spectra in pH-controlled buffer solutions yields the results that the dominant species of BfQ in the LPD silica films is a protonated one. The fluorescence band assigned to a hydrogen-bonded species was observed on the samples prepared from the dipping solutions of 3 and 2 M hexafluorosilicic acid. The band assignment was confirmed by the fluorescence lifetime measurement. The FT-IR M hexaflurosilicic acid. The band assignment was confirmed by the flurescence lifetime meausurement. The FT-IR data proved the existence of included water in silica films prepared from the LPD process. The appearance of the band corresponding to the hydrogen-bonded species within LPD silica phases was explained by the proesence of included water. Depending on the preparation conditions of LPD silica films, the band assigned to protonated species shows bad shifts in a wavenumber region between the peak of hydrogen-bonded and typical protonated species. This implies that there is some distribution of steric conformation of protonated species of BfQ interacting with adsorbing sites of LPD silica. The time -resolved fluorescence spectra suggest that some relaxation process is involved in the conformation of BfQ doped into the solid phase of LPD silica.

  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), when incorporated into mouse liver microsomal membranes, selectively inhibits the mutagenesis of 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoline (IQ). Nine-week old female ICR mice were given (p.o.) 0.1 mL olive oil alone (control), 0.1 mL olive oil plus 0.1 mL linoleic acid, or 0.1 mL olive oil plus 0.1 mL CLA, twice weekly for four weeks. The animals were then sacrificed and liver S-9 fractions were prepared. Activation of IQ for mutagenesis by the liver S-9 from CLA-treated mice was significantly reduced in comparison wit liver S-9 from control or linolic acid-treated mice. By contrast, the activation of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a] anthracene (DMBA) and benzo[a] pyrene (BP) was unaffected. Hence, CLA incorporated into phospholipids may selectively affect cytochrome P450 isozymes responsible for activating IQ, but not those which activate BP or DMBA. The addition of free CLA or the methyl esters of CLA, linoleic acid, or oleic acid, to control S-9 inhibited the activation of all three mutagens (IQ, BP, and DMBA).
