Superintendents have been used microbial fertilizers to improve turfgrass growth and quality and to decrease turfgrass diseases in golf course. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of compound fertilizer containing microbe (MF) on the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass with turf color index (TCI), chlorophyll index (ChI), root length, turfgrass density, clipping yield and nutrient content. Treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), compound fertilizer (21-17-17; CF) as control, compound fertilizer (14-6-17) containing microbe. In pot experiment, TCI and ChI of creeping bentgrass in MF plot were similar to those in CF. But clipping dry weight of MF plot increased by 39.1% compared to that of CF plot. At field experiment applied with MF treatment, TCI, ChI, root length, and nutrient content and uptake of creeping bentgrass were similar to those with CF treatment, but turfgrass density with MF higher about 7.9-15.8% than with CF. These results indicated that the application of MF improved growth and quality of creeping bentgrass by enhancing clipping yield and shoot number.

This study was conducted to investigate dry matter yield and quality of six turf grasses, and thus to apply its result into making mixed species in the mixtures. The six turf grasses were Kentucky bluegrass(Newport), red fescue(Salem), creeping bentgrass(Crenshaw), perennial ryegrass(Palmer Ⅱ), tall fescue(Rebell Jr.) and redtop(Barricuda). This experiment was carried out for 3-years at grassland experimental field of Chungnam National University. The dry matter(DM) yield obtained in tall fescue and redtop was higher than those of the other species(p<0.05). Consideration of crude protein content and dry matter digestibility(DMD), the species of high quality compared to the other species were creeping bentgrass, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass. The crude protein dry matter yield was higher in Kentucky bluegrass and redtop, it was lower in red fescue(p<0.05). On the other hand, digestible dry matter(DDM) yield was higher in tall fescue and redtop, but lower in creeping bentgrass and red fescue(p<0.05). Based on the result mentioned above, therefore, it is suggested that turf grasses such as tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and redtop are recommended as species of turf grass which could be used as bottom grasses in mixtures.

This study was initiated to investigate herbicidal selectivity margin with annual bluegrass and bentgrass according to growth stages through herbicidal spectrum of bispyribac-sodium and therefore to examine application possibility to prevent annual bluegrass selectively. The herbicidal efncacy by pre-emergence application was generally low. But a high herbicidal efficacy was observed over 90% for Shehpherd's purse. Foliar treatment resulted in a higher herbicidal efficacy in all tested plants except dallisgrass, lovegrass, curled dock and bentgrass as compared with pre-emergence application. We found bispyribac-sodium could be used as a selective weeding chemical between annual bluegrass and bentgrass. In regard to dose-responses to the growth stage, annual bluegrass was more susceptible to bispyribac-sodium than bentgrass for the same dosage. Particularly, bispyribac-sodium application in inflorescence emergence stage showed a greater herbicidal selectivity margin of 6.8 times with annual bluegrass over creeping bentgrass after 28 days from the application. These data demonstrated that annual bluegrass was more sensitive to bispyribac-sodium over creeping bentgrass.
This study conducted to evaluate the growth characteristics of creeping bentgrass in summer after application of the plant growth regulator, Trinecapac-ethyl, and these data may provide basic information to golf course turf maintenance. The results showed that the shoot density of creeping bentgrass was increased an average density of 1.7 $ea/cm^2$ with the trinexapac-ethyl application, especially about 2 $ea/cm^2$ during the growth retarded period of June and July. The root length increased also in June and August. The visual quality was improved significantly with trinexapac-ethyl treatment all the experimental periods, moreover, the effect was significant by reducing a summer decline stress of creeping bentgrass during the warm and humid period of summer. The green speed was significantly improved by this growth regulator treatment and those effect was prominent during stressed season of late June to mid July. Overall of the result, we found that shoot density, visual quality and green speed of bentgrass green were improved by trinexapac-ethyl treated from early growing season of spring and these effects were continued during summer. It should be very beneficial to manage the bentgrass green in stressed season. In future, the possibility and efficiency of mixture with fungicides and/or fertilizers might be needed. The spring green-up test with trinexapac-ethyl will be followed in next spring.
Turfgrass survival and ocurrence of brown patch disease during summer season were investigated the forty six cultivars of cool season grasses in 6 species, popularly used in golf courses in Korea. Ocurrence of brown patch disease was evaluated two times in July. The percentage of turfgrass survival was investigated on Aug. 20 and on Sep. 20 in 2010. There were significant difference for the percentage of turfgrass survival and brown patch disease occurrence among cultivars. Brown patch disease caused by Rhizoctonia spp. and Pythium aphanidermatum with rDNA ITS were showed most susceptible in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds) cultivars and chewings fescue (Festuca rubra var. commutata Gaud) cultivars. The percentage of turfgrass survival during August to September was showed lower creeping bentgrass cultivars and chewings fescue cultivars than another cultivars. Among of 20 cultivars in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) species were showed highest survival in cultivars of "Nuglade", "Cabernet", "Midnight II" and "Beyond". 6 cultivars of Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) were showed highest survival in cultivars of "Double sentry", "Inferno", and cultivars of "Accent II" in Perennial ryegrass (Lolium parenne L.) species.
The growth characteristics of creeping bentgrass seeded in the seaside landfill golf course are as follows. 1. As a result of analysis on the chemical characteristics of soil mixture used for turfgrass ground in this experiment, soil pH was 7.9, which is somewhat higher than the creeping bentgrass reference value of pH 5.5∼6.5; T-N(%) was 0.02, which is proper for the reference value, and trace element too lacked. 2. The cultivar with the fastest water infiltration was Seaside II recorded as 226.2cm/sec, while that with the slowest water infiltration was Pennlinks recorded as 141.1 cm/hr which was too faster than the USGA water infiltration reference value of 15∼30cm/hr. For the surface hardness of turfgrass ground with different cultivars, no statistically significant variation was found between the Penncross grass and the Pennlinks recorded as 18.6mm and 19.1 mm, respectively. The soil penetration was the highest in Pennlinks recorded as 7.6kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and lowest in Penn A-1 as 6.1kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 3. As a result of evaluation on visual quality at the early stage of growth, Penncross showed the most excellent visual quality compared to the others. However, Penn A-1 showed the most excellent visual quality at a late stage of growth around Sep. 17, 2003, and it was also excellent in the evaluation of visual color. Seaside II showed higher density around the root and the longest root length and was highly resistant to salt compared to others, but the initial sprouting rate was not satisfied, and the visual quality in the summer season was inferior to others. 4. As a result of measurement of the traffic injury, Penncross showed the most tolerant to the traffic stress and Pennlinks showed the most susceptible.
Eleven species of Pythium were identified from 125 isolates collected from leaf blight lesions on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), and zoysiagrasses (Zoysia japonica Steud., and Z. matrella (L.) Merr.) at 35 golf courses in Korea in $1990{\sim}1996$. The identified species included P. aphanidermatum, P. arrhenomanes, P. catenulatum, P. graminicola, P. myriotylum, P. oligandrum, P. periplocum, P. rostratum, P. torulosum, P. ultimum var. ultimum, and P. vanterpoolii. Mycological characteristics of sporangia, oogonia, antheridia, and oospores observed on the sucrose-asparagine bentgrass leaf culture medium were described for each species. Of the species, P. arrhenomanes, P. catenulatum, P. gmminicola, P. oligandrum, P. periplocum, P. rostratum, P. torulosum and P. vanterpoolii were reported for the first time in Korea. P. myriotylum, P. rostratum, P. torulosum and P. vanterpoolii showed characteristic colony patterns on the potato-carrot agar medium, which can be used as criteria for species identification of Pythium.
Eleven species of Pythium were isolated from leaf blight symptoms on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustirs Huds.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratenisis L.) and zoysiagrasses (Zoysia japonica Steud., and Z. matrella (L.) Merr.) planted on golf courses in Korea. Mycelial growth on potato carrot agar medium under various temperature conditions indicated that Pythium species obtained in this study could be divided into four groups based on their responses to temperature conditions. P. vanterpoolii was found to favor low temperature conditions with the optimum temperature of $25^{\circ}$, whereas P. aphanidermatum and P. myriotylum favored relatively high temperature conditions with the optimum temperature of $35^{\circ}$. Other species including P. arrhenomanes, P. catenulatum, P. graminicola, P. oligandrum, P. rostratum, P. torulosum, and P. ultimum were the intermediate group with the optimum temperature of 25~$35^{\circ}$. P. periplocum was similar to the intermediate group but the minimum temperature for its mycelial growth was $15^{\circ}$, which was approximately $5^{\circ}$ above that for the intermediate Pythium spp.group. In the pathogenicity tests conducted in the lab using potted plants, P. aphanidermatum, P.a arrhenomanes, P. catenulatum, P. graminicola, P. myriotylum, P. periplocum, P. rostratum, P. torulosum, P. ultimum, and P. vanterpoolii were found to be pathogenic to creeping bentgrass and Kentucky bluegrass. P. aphanidermatum, P. catenulatum, and P. graminicola were frequently isolated from leaf blight symptoms of creeping bentgrass and Kentucky bluegrass in golf courses during the warm and humid periods in July-August. On the other hand, P. vanterpoolii and P. torulosum were frequently isolated during the cool and humid periods in March-May, suggesting both species might be the major causes of leaf blight occurring in the spring time. Zoysiagrass was susceptible to P. arrhenomanes and the heterothallic Pythium sp. (Ht-F), showing stem and crown rot of turf-grasses at poorly drained areas under coool and humid or rainy conditions. P. oligandrum and the heterothallic Pythium sp. (Ht-L) isolated from creeping bentgrass were avirulent to all species of turfgrasses tested in this study.

It was previously pointed out that mutation is the ultimate source of variation. Adequate variation is needed for plant breeding if there is a limitation in natural genetic resources. When the ionizing radiation has been known to cause chromosomal and genomic alternations, it is widely used for inducing mutagenesis. The electron beam as an ionizing radiation is the principal physical mutagens that induces mutation and effectively used in plant breeding. Since dose-response relationships of electron beam in plant species are rarely known, we investigated the seed germination rate and early seedling growth of irradiated seeds of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds., cv Penn-A1) with various electron beam irradiating conditions (1, 1.3, 2 MeV at both 0.03 mA and 0.06 mA with dose of 100 Gy (Gray) and 0.03, 1, 1.3, 2 MeV at 0.03 mA with dose of 200 Gy, respectively) using electron accelerator at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The growth parameters in terms of shoot length, primary root length, and secondary root length showed similar response between 0.06 / 1 (mA / MeV) at 100 Gy and 0.03 / 0.3 (mA / MeV) at 200 Gy. Bentgrass seed germination was mainly affected by the intensity of irradiated dose (Gray). Germination rate was lowered as the irradiated dose increased. On the other hand, early seedling growth was mainly governed not by the dose of radiation but by voltage.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of soil microbial fertilizer (SMF) containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae HS-1 and Streptococcus thermophiles HS-2 on the growth of creeping bentgrass. For the pot experiment, the treatments were as follows: no fertilizer (NF), control (3 N g/m2/month), SMF-1 (control+SMF 2 mL/m2/time), and SMF-2 (control+SMF 4 mL/m2/time). For the plot experiment, the treatments were as follows: NF, control, SMFp-1 (control+SMF 1 mL/m2/time), SMFp-2 (control+SMF 2 mL/m2/time), and SMFp-3 (control+SMF 4 mL/m2/time). In the pot experiment, visual turfgrass quality and the uptake amount of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) were increased under the SMF treatments, whereas the content of chlorophyll (a, b, and a+b) and clipping yield were not considerably different compared with the control. In the pot experiment, the amount of SMF positively correlated with visual turfgrass quality and uptake amount of N and K. In the plot experiment, turfgrass density was increased by 12.9-19.2% under SMFp treatments compared with the control. These results indicated that the application of SMF containing Sa. cerevisiae HS-1 and St. thermophiles HS-2 improved the quality, density, and growth of creeping bentgrass via prompting the uptake of N and K.
