In the present paper, the destructive behavior of distilled water, salty water, sulfuric acid, and heat on glass/vinyl ester composites was investigated by experimental methods. Hetron 922 vinyl ester resin and two types of mat and woven glass fibers as the reinforcements were used to fabricate composite test samples. All samples were immersed in distilled water, salty water, and sulfuric acid with three different concentrations. The tests were performed at 20℃ and 70℃ for the exposure duration of 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Bending tests were performed after aging for all composite samples to check the degradation of the bending modulus and strength. The results show that the effect of distilled water, in comparison with salty water, on the degradation of composite samples was significant. On the other hand, almost non-sensitivity of concentrations of salty water on the weight gain of specimens has been observed. In addition, it was also observed that the degradation of samples at 70℃ temperature is much more than that of at 20℃. Also, it was observed that the flexural modulus of virgin specimens exposed to salty water (2% concentration) has been recovered just after two weeks of immersion. Furthermore, in some cases, composite samples under the sulfuric acid solution have lost almost 80% of their mechanical properties.

For the complicated structural details in ships and offshore structures, the traditional hotspot stress approaches are known to be sensitive to the element variables of element topologies, sizes, and integration schemes. This motivated to develop a new approach for predicting reasonable hotspot stresses, which is less sensitive to the element variables and easy to be implemented the real marine structures. The three-point bending tests were conducted for the longitudinal attachments with the round and rectangular weld toes. The tests were reproduced in the numerical simulations using the solid and shell element models, and the simulation technique was validated by comparing the experimental stresses with the simulated ones. This paper considered three hotspot stress approaches: the ESM method based on surface stress extrapolation, the Dong's method based on nodal forces along a weld toe, and the proposed method based on nodal forces perpendicular to an imaginary vertical plane at a weld toe. In order to study the element sensitivities of each method, 16 solid element models and 8 shell element models were generated under the bending and tension loads, respectively. The element sensitivity was analyzed in terms of Stress Concentration Factors (SCFs) in viewpoints of two statistical quantities of mean and bias with respect to the reference SCFs. The average SCFs predicted by the proposed method were remarkably in good agreement with the reference SCFs based on the experiments and the ship rules. Negligibly small Coefficients of Variation (CVs) of the SCFs, which is measure of statistical bias, were drawn by the proposed method.
This study conducted aeromechanics modeling and structural load analyses of Tilt Rotor Aeroacoustic Model (TRAM), a 25% scaled V-22 tiltrotor model used in wind tunnel tests. A rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II, was used. Analysis results of this study in low-speed forward flights were compared with DNW test and previous analysis results. Blade flap bending moments were in good agreement with measured data. Mean values and oscillatory loads for lead-lag bending and torsion moments were slightly different from measured data. However, when mean values were removed, results of structural loads for one rotor revolution were moderately compared with wind tunnel tests and previous analyses. Total forces and half peak-to-peak forces of the pitch link reasonably well matched with previous analysis results and measured data. Finally, harmonic magnitudes of blade structural loads were investigated.
This paper shows the results of a series of model tests on the behavior of steel pipe pile which is subjected to lateral and inclined loads in homogeneous and non-homogeneous Nak-dong River sands. Non-homogeneous soil consisted of two layers, upper and lower layer. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the effect of ratio of lower layer height to embedded pile length, ratio of soil modules of upper layer to lower layer and inclined load on the behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. As a result. in non-homogeneous sand soil, it is shown that the lateral behavior depends upon the ratio of soil modules of upper layer to lower layer more than other factors. And it was found that the relationship between the deflection ratio of non-homogeneous sand to homogeneous sand and the ratio of lower layer height to embedded pile length can be fitted to exponential function of H/L by model tests results. For the inclined load applied, it is shown that the bending moment-depth relationship is not similar to the case of laterally loaded pile and the depth of maximum bending moment at relative density of 90% increases about 70% more than the pile only loaded laterally.
Without output covariance estimation, one reference-based Stochastic Subspace Technique (SST) for extracting modal parameters and flutter derivatives of bridge deck is developed and programmed. Compared with the covariance-driven SST and the oscillation signals incurred by oncoming or signature turbulence that adopted by previous investigators, the newly-presented identification scheme is less time-consuming in computation and a more desired accuracy should be contributed to high-quality free oscillated signals excited by specific initial displacement. The reliability and identification precision of this technique are confirmed by a numerical example. For the 3-DOF sectional models of Sutong Bridge deck (streamlined) and Suramadu Bridge deck (bluff) in wind tunnel tests, with different wind velocities, the lateral bending, vertical bending, torsional frequencies and damping ratios as well as 18 flutter derivatives are extracted by using SST. The flutter derivatives of two kinds of typical decks are compared with the pseudo-steady theoretical values, and the performance of $H_1{^*}$, $H_3{^*}$, $A_1{^*}$, $A_3{^*}$ is very stable and well-matched with each other, respectively. The lateral direct flutter derivatives $P_5{^*}$, $P_6{^*}$ are comparatively more accurate than other relevant lateral components. Experimental procedure seems to be more critical than identification technique for refining the estimation precision.
This paper presents an efficiency of various non-conforming (NC) modes in development of a series of new finite elements with the special emphasis on 4-node quadrilateral elements. The NC modes have been used as a key scheme to improve the behaviors of various types of new finite elements, i.e., Mindlin plate bending elements, membrane elements with drilling degrees of freedom, flat shell elements. The NC modes are classified into three groups according to the 'correction constants' of 'Direct Modification Method'. The first group is 'basic NC modes', which have been widely used by a number of researchers in the finite element communities. The basic NC modes are effective to improve the behaviors of regular shaped elements. The second group is 'hierarchical NC modes' which improve the behaviors of distorted elements effectively. The last group is 'higher order NC modes' which improve the behaviors of plate-bending elements. When the basic NC modes are combined with hierarchical or higher order NC modes, the elements become insensitive to mesh distortions. When the membrane component of a flat shell has 'hierarchical NC modes', the membrane locking can be suppressed. A number of numerical tests are carried out to show the positive effect of aforementioned various NC modes incorporated into various types of finite elements.
To study the effects of foam core density and face-sheet thickness on the mechanical properties and failure modes of aluminum foam sandwich (AFS) beam, especially when the aluminum foam core is made in aluminum alloy and the face sheet thickness is less than 1.5 mm, three-point bending tests were investigated experimentally by using WDW-50E electronic universal tensile testing machine. Load-displacement curves were recorded to understand the mechanical response and photographs were taken to capture the deformation process of the composite structures. Results demonstrated that when foam core was combined with face-sheet thickness of 0.8 mm, its carrying capacity improved with the increase of core density. But when the thickness of face-sheet increased from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm, result was opposite. For AFS with the same core density, their carrying capacity increased with the face-sheet thickness, but failure modes of thin face-sheet AFS were completely different from the thick face-sheet AFS. There were three failure modes in the present research: yield damage of both core and bottom face-sheet (Failure mode I), yield damage of foam core (Failure mode II), debonding between the adhesive interface (Failure mode III).

A straight pipe is used after complicated bending work in a mechanical system. In this work process, the plastic deformation of the pipe produces residual stress in the pipe. This residual stress significantly affects the behavior of pipe fracture. For this reason, residual stress must be evaluated. Measuring the residual stress of a U-shaped pipe is difficult with existing destructive and nondestructive measurement methods. In this paper, the residual stress of a U-shaped aluminum pipe (99.7% pure aluminum) was evaluated from the Raman shift by Raman spectroscopy and FEM(Finite Element Method, FEM) analysis. The results of the stiffness test by FEM analysis are compared with those by experiments. The analyzed results of the Raman spectra showed a similar tendency with the results of the FEM analysis with respect to the residual stress distributions in U-shaped pipes. Also, the results of the bending tests showed resemblance to each other.

In order to improve the vibration characteristics of mid sized passenger car automatic transmission at idle experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out. Idle shake in "D" range occurs by various reasons such as characteristics of body bending resonance between subsystems and engine mounts etc. Using full vehicle finite element analyses and modal tests we introduce the way to reduce the idle shake in the early design stage. It shows that the exciting forces are the 2nd order torque and force of engine. A powertrain system modes in "D" range are entirely effected by the additional boundary conditions of drive line. As a result the frequencies of subsystems are arranged to be lined up at the idle frequency range in order to avoid the resonances with subsystems To reduce the idle shake mounts of radiator are tuned to act as a dynamic damper to 1st bending frequency of the body. In addition a hydraulic mount which is optimized by Phase Shift Method is applied to the rear engine mount.e rear engine mount.
SiC fiber reinforced $Si_3N_4$ matrix composites combined with electrical conductive phases of carbon fiber and WC powder fabricated by hot pressing at 1773K. The ability to predict fracture in the ceramic matrix composites was evaluated by measuring simultaneous load-deflection and electrical resistanc difference-deflection curves in four point bending tests. The changes in electrical resistance differences closely corresponded to the fracture behavior of the composites. Different electrical conductive phases are suited to predicting different stages and rates of fracture. These obsevations how that it is possible to perform "in situ" fracture detection in ceramic composites.
