  • $Al_2O_3$/SiC particulate reinforced (Metal Matrix Composites) MMCs which were produced by using stir casting process, bending strength and hardening behaviour were obtained using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique that uses full factorial design. Factor variables and their ranges were: particle size $2-60{\mu}m$; the stirring speed 450 rpm, 500 rpm and the stirring temperature $620^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$. An empirical equation was derived from test results to describe the relationship between the test parameters. This model for the tensile strength of the hybrid composite materials with $R^2$ adj = 80% for the bending strength $R^2$ adj = 89% were generated from the data. The regression coefficients of this model quantify the tensile strength and bending strengths of the effects of each of the factors. The interactions of all three factors do not present significant percentage contributions on the tensile strength and bending strengths of hybrid composite materials. Analysis of the residuals versus was predicted the tensile strength and bending strengths show a normalized distribution and thereby confirms the suitability of this model. Particle size was found to have the strongest influence on the tensile strength and bending strength.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations of aluminum tubular members subjected to combined bending and web crippling. A series of tests was performed on square hollow sections (SHS) fabricated by extrusion using 6061-T6 heat-treated aluminum alloy. Different specimen lengths were tested to obtain the interaction relationship between moment and concentrated load. The non-linear finite element models were developed and verified against the experimental results obtained in this study and test data from existing literature for aluminum tubular sections subjected to pure bending, pure web crippling, and combined bending and web crippling. Geometric and material non-linearities were included in the finite element models. The finite element models closely predicted the strengths and failure modes of the tested specimens. Hence, the models were used for an extensive parametric study of cross-section geometries, and the web slenderness values ranged from 6.0 to 86.2. The combined bending and web crippling test results and strengths predicted from the finite element analysis were compared with the design strengths obtained using the current American Specification, Australian/New Zealand Standard and European Code for aluminum structures. The findings suggest that the current specifications are either quite conservative or unconservative for aluminum square hollow sections subjected to combined bending and web crippling. Hence, a bending and web crippling interaction equation for aluminum square hollow section specimens is proposed in this paper.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of internal holes on the bending strength of PB. The diameters of holes are 0mm to 13mm. The locations of holes are 1/8 to 4/5 point horizontally from sample end and are 1/5 to 4/5 vertically from sample surface, the numbers of holes are 1 to 4 pcs. In the size of internal holes, the bending strengths of PB were decreased significantly with the increase of diameter of holes, and the relationship between diameters(D) of holes and bending strength (${\sigma}_b$) of PB was ${\sigma}_b=-11D+168.8$ ($r^2=-0.99^{**}$). The effects of hole-locations and hole-numbers on the bending strengths of PB were large. and so they should be considered as major factors for the jointing design of PB.

  • The present work deals with the prediction, through models and experimental evaluation, of the bending strength of roller compacted concrete (RCC) for pavement applications. This concrete was manufactured using low cement proportioning (150 to $250\;kg/m^3$). The characterization of hardened RCC was carried out by experimental measurements of bending strengths. The predictions of these characteristics were achieved using empirical models. Comparison, of the values found in experiments with those empirically obtained, was made in order to choose and to propose the adapted and the most reliable models of prediction. The study showed that the bending strengths of the RCC mixture, experimentally found, can be also identified by models.

  • Fibre-added concretes are frequently used in large site applications such as slab and airports as well as in bearing system elements or prefabricated elements. It is very difficult to determine the mechanical properties of the fibre-added concretes by experimental methods in situ. The purpose of this study is to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model in order to predict the compressive and bending strengths of hybrid fibre-added and non-added concretes. The strengths have been predicted by means of the data that has been obtained from destructive (DT) and non-destructive tests (NDT) on the samples. NDTs are ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and Rebound Hammer Tests (RH). 105 pieces of cylinder samples with a dimension of $150{\times}300mm$, 105 pieces of bending samples with a dimension of $100{\times}100{\times}400mm$ have been manufactured. The first set has been manufactured without fibre addition, the second set with the addition of %0.5 polypropylene and %0.5 steel fibre in terms of volume, and the third set with the addition of %0.5 polypropylene, %1 steel fibre. The water/cement (w/c) ratio of samples parametrically varies between 0.3-0.9. The experimentally measured compressive and bending strengths have been compared with predicted results by use of ANN method.

  • For effective applicability of reinforced cork, cork composites reinforced with metal, glass fiber, and carbon fiber were developed, and the effects of the reinforcing materials on the mechanical properties of cork composites were investigated. The bending moduli of elasticity (MOE) of cork composites were in the 32.7-35.9 MPa range, while the bending strength values were in the 1.62-1.73 MPa range. The strength performance decreased in the order cork-metal > cork-carbon fiber > cork-glass fiber. The bending MOEs were improved by 29%-41% compared with simple cork boards, while the bending strengths of reinforced cork were 35%-45% higher. The strength performance significantly improved following the incorporation of thin mesh materials into the middle layer of the studied cork composites. The bending strains of the cork composites were remarkably higher compared with oak wood, making them promising for applications that require bending processing, such as curved jointing. The internal bond strengths of the cork composites were 0.26-0.44 MPa, approximately 0.36-0.60 times lower compared with medium-density fiber boards.

  • In order to deeply reveal the working mechanism of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) filled steel tubular columns (UHPCFSTs) under cyclic loading, a three-dimension (3D) macro-mesoscale finite element (FE) model was established considering the randomness of steel fibers and the damage of UHPC. Model correctness and reliability were verified based on the experimental results. Next, the whole failure process of UHPC reinforced with steel fibers, passive confinement effect and internal force distribution laws were comprehensively analyzed and discussed. Finally, a simplified and practical method was proposed for predicting the ultimate bending strengths of UHPCFSTs. It was found that the non-uniform confinement effect of steel tube occurred when the drift ratio exceeded 0.5%, while the confining stress increased then decreased afterwards. There was preferable synergy between the steel tube and UHPC until failure. Compared with experimental results, the ultimate bending strengths of UHPCFSTs were undervalued by the current code provisions such as AISC360-10, EC4 and GB50936 with computed mean values (MVs) of 0.855, 0.880 and 0.836, respectively. The proposed practical method was highly accurate, as evidenced by a mean value of 1.058.

  • The thermal residual stresses were estimated for brazed Si3N4/S.S.316 joints with Cu/Mo multi-interlayers using FEM, and their bending strengths at room temperature were measured for various interlayer configura-tions. The Cu, Mo multi-interlayer decreased the maximum residual stress in Si3N4 and caused the residual stress redistribution rsulting in the high residual stress at Mo interlayer. The stress distribution in the joints as well as the maximum residual stress in silicon nitride were found to be main factors for determining bending strengths and Weibull modulous of the joints. The bending strength of the brazed Si3N4/S.S.316 joints with specific Cu, Mo multi-interlayer system were found to be above 400 MPa.

  • This paper evaluates the static and fatigue bending strengths of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) laminates subjected to hygrothermals. The specimens which had different stacking composition, orthotropic and quasi-isotropic laminated plates, were prepared for this experiment. A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages, and the 3-point fatigue bending test is carried out by using the impacted laminates to investigate the influence of hygrothermals on the effect on the residual bending fatigue strength of CFRP laminates.
