Bending Performances and Collapse Mechanisms of Light-weight Aluminum-GERP Hybrid Square Tube Beams (경량화 알루미늄-GFRP 혼성 사각관 보의 굽힘성능 및 붕괴 메커니즘)

  • Bending collapse of light-weight square tubes used for vehicle structure components is a dominant failure mode in oblique collision and rollover of vehicles. In this paper bending performances of aluminum-GFRP hybrid tube beams were evaluated in relation with bending deformation behavior and energy absorption characteristics. Aluminum/GFRP hybrid tube beams fabricated by inserting adhesive film between prepreg and metal layer were used in the bending test. Failure mechanisms of hybrid tubes under a bending load were experimentally investigated to analyze the bending performance as a function of ply orientation and composite layer thickness. Ultimate bending moments and energy absorption capacity of hybrid tube beams were obtained from the measured load-displacement corves. It was found that aluminum/GFRP hybrid tubes could be converted to rather stable collapse mode showing excellent energy absorption capacity in comparison to the pure aluminum tube beams. In particular, the hybrid tube beam with $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]s$ composite layer showed a large improvement by about 78% in energy absorption capacity and by 29% in specific energy absorption.

  • Bellows are suggested as energy absorbing elements for automotive steering systems. A metallic bellows has nearly constant axial collapse load which is desirable as an energy absorbing element for a steering column. Axial collapsability and bending flexibility of bellows can be utilized to reduce upward tilting and backward displacement of steering columns in the early stage of high speed crash. Since bending flexibility of bellows has negative effects on the vibration characteristics of steering columns it is necessary to maximize the first natural frequency of a bellows while maintaining its plastic bending flexibility and axial collapse load. An effort is made to attain optimum design of bellows based upon the Taguchi method. A general guideline for design of bellows is suggested.

  • In this study, the collapse characteristic of CFRP/Al compound square tube was investigated experimentally. The conclusions are as follows; The impact collapse characteristic of CFRP/Al compound square tube was found to be the most superior stacking conditions $[90^{\circ}]_8$. It showed that a very stable collapse mode was crushing. In the member with $[0_2{^{\circ}}/90_2{^{\circ}}]_s$ and $[90_2{^{\circ}}/0_2{^{\circ}}]_s$, stacking conditions, $0^{\circ}$ fibers were splayed to the external by laminar bending, while the $90^{\circ}$ fibers were held between the folds of the aluminum member by laminar bending, local buckling and transverse crack. In the member with $[45_2{^{\circ}}/45_2{^{\circ}}]_s$ stacking conditions, fibers were held between the folds of the aluminum member by local buckling and transverse crack.

A Benchmark Study of Design Codes on Offshore Pipeline Collapse for Ultra-Deepwater

  • The objective of this paper is to summarize current ultra-deepwater (i.e., up to 3,500 meters water depth) pipeline mechanical design methodologies as part of the limit state design. The standard mechanical design for ultra-deepwater pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is based on API RP 1111. API code also has been used for deepwater projects in west Africa. DNV code OS-F101 was mostly used for deepwater projects in offshore Brazil and Europe. Some pipeline designs in the GOM have started to incorporate parts of the DNV design methodology. A discussion of failure under collapse only and combined loading (i.e. pressure + bending) is presented. The best design criteria are obtained from physical full-scale collapse testing. The comparison of the physical test data and collapse calculations using the DNV and API codes will be presented. It was found that the conservatism still exists in the collapse prediction for ultra-deepwater pipeline using modem design codes such as DNV OS-F101 and API RP 1111.

A Theoretical Investigation on Shakedown Analysis of Framed Structures (강뼈대 구조물의 소성안정 해석에 관한 이론적 연구)

  • For the collapse of structures due to the variable repeated load, two types of collapse mechanisms, i.e., incremental collapse and alternating plasticity, exist. Under the similar variable repeated loading conditions there exists shakedown state in the structures. In shakedown state, the number of plastic hinges are not increased and all further loading will be resulted in the elastic moment changes. Namely, under the shakedown state, structures do not collapse. In this investigation, shakedown analysis are performed by composing new computer programs. Basic theories employed to compose the programs are as follows. 1. Newton-Raphson methods are added to the existing matrix method for the plastic analysis. 2. An effort to construct the stiffness of axial and bending springs attached at both ends of the member has been made. By using the programs developed, it is possible to anticipate the collapse mechanisms (Incremental collapse, alternating plasticity). Lastly for the verification of performance of the program, demonstration examples have been solved and the results are compared with other sources.

Evaluation of Plastic Collapse Bending Load of Elbows with Thinning Area of Various Shapes (여러 형상의 감육부를 가진 엘보우의 소성붕괴 굽힘 하중의 평가)

  • Elbows with various shapes of local wall thinning were numerically analyzed by finite element method to get load-displacement curves and the maximum loads. Results were compared with the experimental data obtained by another study. Elastic-plastic analysis were carried out under the combined loading conditions of internal pressure and in-plane bending loads. Two types of bending loads were considered such as elbow opening mode and elbow closing mode. Also, two different wall thinning geometries were modeled. Wall thinning area located extrados or intrados of elbow inner surface was considered. Longitudinal and circumferential lengths of the thinning area and the thinned thickness were varied for analysis. The results showed that the maximum load of the wall-thinned elbow decreased with increasing of the circumferential thinning length and the thinned thickness in both of extrados and intrados thinning locations in both loading types. The maximum load obtained by the analysis were in good agreement with the experimentally measured maximum load with the same wall thinning type and dimensions. This supports accuracy of the analysis results obtained in this study.

Fabrication of Metallic Sandwich Plates with Inner Dimpled Shell Structure and Static Bending Test (딤플형 내부구조 금속 샌드위치 판재의 제작 및 정적 굽힘 실험)

  • Metallic sandwich plates with various inner cores have important new features with not only ultra-light material characteristics and load bearing function but also multifunctional characteristics. Because of production possibility on the large scale and a good geometric precision, sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell structure from a single material have advantages as compared with other solid sandwich plates. Inner dimpled shell structures can be fabricated with press or roll forming process, and then bonded with two face sheets by multi-point resistance welding or adhesive bonding. Elasto-plastic bending behavior of sandwich plates have been predicted analytically and measured. The measurements have shown that elastic perfectly plastic approximation can be conveniently employed with less than 10% error in elastic stiffness, collapse load, and energy absorption. The dominant collapse modes are face buckling and bonding failure after yielding. Sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell structure can absorb more energy than other types of sandwich plates during the bending behavior.

Effect of Wall Thinning Defect on the Collapse Moment of Elbow (엘보우의 붕괴모멘트에 미치는 감육결함의 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of local wall thinning on the collapse of elbow subjected to internal pressure and bending moment. Thus, the nonlinear 3D finite element analyses were performed to obtained collapse moment of elbow containing various wall thinning defects under two loading; modes (closing and opening modes) and defect locations (intrados and extrados). From the results of analyses, the influence of wall thinning defect on the global moment-rotation behavior of elbow was discussed, and the dependance of collapse moment of elbow on wall thinning depth, length, and circumferential angle was investigated under different loading mode and defect location.

Progressive collapse analysis of steel frame structure based on the energy principle

  • The progressive collapse potential of steel moment framed structures due to abrupt removal of a column is investigated based on the energy principle. Based on the changes of component's internal energy, this paper analyzes structural member's sensitivity to abrupt removal of a column to determine a sub-structure resisting progressive collapse. An energy-based structural damage index is defined to judge whether progressive collapse occurs in a structure. Then, a simplified beam damage model is proposed to analyze the energies absorbed and dissipated by structural beams at large deflections, and a simplified modified plastic hinges model is developed to consider catenary action in beams. In addition, the correlation between bending moment and axial force in a beam during the whole deformation development process is analyzed and modified, which shows good agreement with the experimental results.
