  • According to deformation features of pre-twisted bar, its elastic bending and torsion buckling equation is developed in the paper. The equation indicates that the bending buckling deformations in two main bending directions are coupled with each other, bending and twist buckling deformations are coupled with each other as well. However, for pre-twisted bar with dual-axis symmetry cross-section, bending buckling deformations are independent to the twist buckling deformation. The research indicates that the elastic torsion buckling load is not related to the pre-twisted angle, and equals to the torsion buckling load of the straight bar. Finite element analysis to pre-twisted bar with different pre-twisted angle is performed, the prediction shows that the assumption of a plane elastic bending buckling deformation curve proposed in previous literature (Shadnam and Abbasnia 2002) may not be accurate, and the curve deviates more from a plane with increasing of the pre-twisting angle. Finally, the parameters analysis is carried out to obtain the relationships between elastic bending buckling critical capacity, the effect of different pre-twisted angles and bending rigidity ratios are studied. The numerical results show that the existence of the pre-twisted angle leads to "resistance" effect of the stronger axis on buckling deformation, and enhances the elastic bending buckling critical capacity. It is noted that the "resistance" is getting stronger and the elastic buckling capacity is higher as the cross section bending rigidity ratio increases.

  • Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) restrict the bend-width of single mode optical filer, and it is important parameter in the optical fiber having long-length. Although fiber has perfect circular symmetry, fiber bending, twisting and laws governing manufacture cause additional Polarization mode dispersion. The effect of polarization mode dispersion in general single mode fiber of long length is discussed in this paper. Measurement of PMD with random mode coupling were conducted in two kind of fibers using different laws governing manufacture and interferometric method.

  • This paper developed the theoretical method to predict structural performances and weight reduction rates of a carbody when its materials should be substituted. For the material substitution design of the carbody, the bending, axial and twisting deformations are evaluated under the constant stiffness and strength conditions. For the design of the primary structures such as the center beams, the cross beams and the cantrails, the bending and axial deformations are investigated under the condition of the constant bending stiffness, the constant bending or buckling strength by considering both the material properties and the cross sectional shapes. The developed indices to measure the weight reduction by the material substitution give good informations on the weak and strong points of a carbody design.

  • Beam-columns are structural members subjected to a combination of axial and bending forces. Lateral-torsional buckling is one of the main failure modes. Beam-columns that are bent about its strong axis may buckle out of the plane by deflecting laterally and twisting as the values of the applied loads reach a limiting state. Lateral-torsional buckling failure occurs suddenly in beam-column elements with a much greater in-plane bending stiffness than torsional or lateral bending stiffness. This study intends to establish a unique convenient closed-form equation that it can be used for calculating critical elastic lateral-torsional buckling load of beam-column in the presence of a known axial load. The presented equation includes first order bending distribution, the position of the loads acting transversely on the beam-column and mono-symmetry property of the section. Effects of axial loads, slenderness and load positions on lateral torsional buckling behavior of beam-columns are investigated. The proposed solutions are compared to finite element simulations where thin-walled shell elements including warping are used. Good agreement between the analytical and the numerical solutions is demonstrated. It is found out that the lateral-torsional buckling load of beam-columns with mono-symmetric sections can be determined by the presented equation and can be safely used in design procedures.

  • Rails are produced by several rolling processes. These processes play an important role on the performance of rails. We analysed the rolling processes by finite element code, DEFORM. The distributions of temperatures and effective strains are obtained. After the rolling processes, the rails are sent to the cooling bed. During the cooling, the rails are bended and twisted. These bending and twisting should be minimized to produce a high quality rail. The analyses of cooling processes and residual stresses produced through the rolling processes will be Presented in the next paper.

  • In this study, the bending and twisting stiffnesses of corrugated plate are analyzed by applying equivalent idea. And the natural frequencies as an application example of the stiffnesses are analyzed by considering corrugated plate as orthotropic plate. The validity of analytic results is examined by comparing with experimental results by fast Fourier transformation analyzer.

  • Rectangular frames of thin sheet metals are press formed during their manufacture. The multistage process includes blanking, stamping, bending, and trimming. After stamping the sheet is subjected to warping and twisting due to residual stresses. The twist is not desirable since it affects the subsequent assembly processes. Study has been performed to predict the twist.

  • To meet demand of big capacity and high speed rotation for washing machine, more stress from bending and twisting are complexly loaded onto the shaft supporting the horizontal drum, causing problems in fracture strength and fatigue life. Shafting system is mainly divided into flange and shaft. Shaft and flange connected by inserting shaft serration into flange on the process of die casting. When the system is operating, the gap is formed between serration and flange. But, Serration has various design factors and the optimal values can't be easily determined. Using a design of experiment (DOE) based on the FEM (Finite Element Method), this study was performed investigating the interaction effect between the various design factors as well as the main effect of the each design factor under bending, twist and vibration and proposed optimum design using box-behnken method among response surface derived from regression equation of simulation-based DOE.

Shafting system is mainly divided into flange and shaft. Flange is located between the drum and shaft, transferring power from the shaft to drum, and acting as a supporter of the back of the drum. Because section of flange has various design factors according to configuration of flange, the optimum conditions can’t be easily determined. Using a design of experiment (DOE), this study was performed investigating the interaction effect between factors as well as the main effect of the each design factor under bending and twist and proposed optimum condition using center composition method among response surface derived from regression equation of simulation-based DOE.

  • High temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes are now commercially available for practical applications to apply various purposes. However HTS tapes show different electrical and mechanical characteristics, according to the manufacturers who are trying to apply various fabrication processes and treatments. From the viewpoint of an application it is very important to investigate the properties of HTS tapes under mechanical stress because the tapes will be wound with twisting and tension in applications such as magnets and cables. Thus, we studied characteristics of HTS tapes and measure critical current under bending, considering of a mechanical conditions. A description of some typical results will be presented with discussions.
