Brain Mechanisms of Cognitive, Emotional and Behavioral Aspects of Taste

  • Taste is associated with hedonic evaluation as well as recognition of quality and intensity. Taste information is sent to the cortical gustatory area in a chemotopical manner to be processed for discrimination of taste quality. It is also conveyed to the reward system and feeding center via the prefrontal cortices. The amygdala, which receives taste inputs, also influences reward and feeding. In terms of neuroactive substances, palatability is closely related to benzodiazepine derivatives and $\beta$-endorphin, both of which facilitate consumption of food and fluid. The reward system contains the ventral tegmental area, nucleus accumbens and ventral pallidum and finally sends information to the lateral hypothalamic area, the feeding center. The dopaminergic system originating from the ventral tegmental area mediates the motivation to consume palatable food. The actual ingestive behavior is promoted by the orexigenic neuropeptides from the hypothalamus. Even palatable food can become aversive and avoided as a consequence of postingestional unpleasant experience such as malaise. The brain mechanism of these aspects of taste is elucidated.

  • The type of physiological stress involved in driving is probably complex, and a comprehensive study involving recording of physiological signals such as electrocardiogram(ECG), electromyogram(EMG). Changes in relevant Physiological parameters, such as ECG, EMG, reflected changes in driver status. In order to derive the mental and physical load of driving a motor vehicle from driving behaviour alone it is necessary to establish the relationship between changes in a driver's physiological parameters and behavioral parameters. In this study, we choose two different condition and investigated driver's status using HRV analysis method. Many previous studies have shown that increasing driving time causes a variation of HRV signal.

Effect of Botulinum Toxin Injection on the Stuttering Patients (말더듬(Stuttering) 환자에 대한 보툴리눔독소의 주입 효과)

  • Stuttering is a movement disorder of speech-motor control characterized by inappropriate timing of lingual, labial, laryngeal, and respiratory muscles. Treatment for adult stutterers have included traditional and non-traditional behavioral and psychiatric modalities, many with good initial success but all with limited long-term benefit. Recent trials of botulinum toxin injection was somewhat favorable. In this study, the authors injected 5-8 U of botulinum toxin into the thyroarytenoid muscle bilaterally in cases of disabling stutterers. Evaluation after 4 weeks of injection, 80% of the patients was improved more than one positive scale. However, no one was improved to almostly normal range.

A Study on Field Behavioral Characteristics of the Roadbed according to the Speed Increase in High-Speed Train (HEMU-430x)

  • This paper is about the first experiment in Korea that was conducted on speeding increase up with rail speeds at 430km/h at high speed railway of designed 350km/h. and analysis data collected on vibration accelerations of roadbed. There are barely references on roadbed behavior measurement with rail speeds more than 350 km/h in Korea as it has never been conducted the experiment on it. So the experiments were confirmed the reliability through crosschecking the figures/values from respective sensors and measuring devices after measuring EMS and ICP types. Based on the study, values of vibration acceleration were less than 12% compared with the ones that conducted while speeding up of HEMU-430X. Also, figures of HSB for concrete bed tracks were 52% against the standard. According to the results, all the performance evaluation of vibration acceleration for roadbeds in transition zones is under the standard.

Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Trajectory for Pedestrian Activity Recognition

  • Recently, researches on automatic recognition of human activities have been actively carried out with the emergence of various intelligent systems. Since a large amount of visual data can be secured through Closed Circuit Television, it is required to recognize human behavior in a dynamic situation rather than a static situation. In this paper, we propose new intelligent human activity recognition model using the trajectory information extracted from the video sequence. The proposed model consists of three steps: segmentation and partitioning of trajectory step, feature extraction step, and behavioral learning step. First, the entire trajectory is fuzzy partitioned according to the motion characteristics, and then temporal features and spatial features are extracted. Using the extracted features, four pedestrian behaviors were modeled by decision tree learning algorithm and performance evaluation was performed. The experiments in this paper were conducted using Caviar data sets. Experimental results show that trajectory provides good activity recognition accuracy by extracting instantaneous property and distinctive regional property.

  • Mobile internet access using such devices as PDAs and cellular phones becomes popular as mobile technologies grow. However, the characteristics of small screen devices such as small screen size and pen-based input cause many usability problems. In this study, a human factors experiment was conducted to identify the factors affecting the usability of information search on a PDA. Factors manipulated in the experiment included use of wheel equipment, scroll dimension, and screen orientation. Task completion time, error frequency, and subjective satisfaction level were measured. In addition, various users' behavioral patterns such as scanning routes and mainly used scrolling methods were analyzed. Scroll dimension has a significant effect on task completion time. Scroll equipment and screen orientation affect subjective satisfaction level. The results could be applied to designing information structure of web sites for mobile use by providing vertical scroll and using external scroll equipments.

  • The evaluation of ubiquitous computing service is the important work for preparing the commercialization of the ubiquitous business services in which ubiquitous intelligence (ubitelligence) is embedded. However, the methodology for evaluating ubiquitous computing services has not been developed enough. Even the study of making a distinction what is 'ubiquitous' or not is insufficient yet. Hence, this paper aims to propose an integrated methodology to assess the ubiquitous computing services. A multi-layered approach is adopted to assess not only technical but also behavioral service levels.

  • This study intends to improve the structural details of the anchors in the conventional CFT column-to-foundation connection. To that goal, finite element analysis is conducted with various design variables (number and embedded length of deformed bars, number, aspect ratio, height ratio and thickness ratio of ribs) selected based upon the results of loading test and strength evaluation. The finite element analysis is performed using ABAQUS and the analytical results are validated by comparison with the load-displacement curves obtained through loading test applying axial and transverse loads. The behavioral characteristics of the numerical model according to the selected design variables are verified and the corresponding results are evaluated.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve the experience of visiting obstetrics and gynecology of single women. After analyzing previous studies on Korean single women's perception of visiting obstetrics and gynecology, Contextual Interviews and Cultural Probes were conducted on single women in their 20s who visited obstetrics and gynecology. Based on this, personas were constructed to solidify the direction of problem solving by identifying the behavioral patterns and characteristics of single women. In this study, factors that hinder unmarried women's visits to obstetrics and gynecology and improvement measures were derived based on the information obtained using service design tools such as User Journey Mapping and Stakeholders' Map. Afterwards, a preference survey was conducted to increase the persuasiveness of the proposed method. The follow-up research task is to produce and propose the derived solution as a prototype that can be used in the actual field, and then proceed with user evaluation.

Major satisfaction and job preference for South Korean dental technology students (치기공과 학생들의 DISC 행동유형별 전공 만족도 및 직업 선호도 분석)

  • Purpose: This study aims to understand the relationship between university major satisfaction and job preference according to DISC behavior patterns. Methods: To conduct our evaluation, we surveyed a group of 118 students from the Department of Dental Laboratory Technology at the college of Jinju city from August 31 to September 11, 2020. The collected data was evaluated through frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, one-way ANOVA, and regression analysis. Results: The analysis revealed that the steadiness type had the highest and the dominance type had the lowest major satisfaction level by DISC behavior type. The job preference was different for each DISC behavior type, and higher the preference for stability and development, the higher the degree of satisfaction with the major. Conclusion: These results suggest that DISC behavior type, major satisfaction, and job preference are all related. Therefore, these factors should be considered when implementing career guidance and educational programs for college students.
