  • This study examined patterns of delinquent behavior trajectory from late childhood to early adolescence and examined relationships between patterns of trajectory and individual, family, and school factors. Youth delinquent behavior trajectories were examined by mixed growth models using data from the 2nd to 5th year surveys of the Seoul Panel Study of Children. Relationships between patterns and effect factors were examined by multinominal logit models. Four patterns emerged: non-delinquency (80%); rapidly accelerating delinquency (3.3%); decelerating delinquency (6.0%); and moderately accelerating (10.7%) groups. Contacts with a delinquent peer group had persistent effects on more serious delinquent behavior trajectories. Increased levels of self-esteem and school achievement prevented increase in delinquent behaviors; close relationships with parents and parental supervision caused decrease in delinquent behaviors.

  • This paper proposes a novel optimization algorithm inspired by bacteria behavior patterns for foraging. Most bacteria can trace attractant chemical molecules for foraging. This tracing capability of bacteria called chemotaxis might be optimized for foraging because it has been evolved for few millenniums. From this observation, we developed a new optimization algorithm based on the chemotaxis of bacteria in this paper. We first define behavior and decision rules based on the behavior patterns of bacteria and then devise an optimization algorithm with these behavior and decision rules. Generally bacteria have a quorum sensing mechanism that makes it possible to effectively forage, but we leave its implementation as a further work for simplicity. Thereby, we call our algorithm a simple bacteria cooperative optimization (BCO) algorithm. Our simple BCO is tested with four function optimization problems on various' parameters of the algorithm. It was found from experiments that the simple BCO can be a good framework for optimization.

  • Purpose: This study investigates the relationship between job stress, depression, health-related behavior and type A behavior patterns among male workers at a steel factory. Methods: The study was done on 171 male workers, using the structured questionnaire. The data were collected in April, 2009 and analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The results showed that 65.5% of workers were under moderate stress, 25.7% high stress and 0.6% extremely high stress. The overall score of these workers' occupational stress was 41.9, lower than the Korean workers' average. Occupational stress was correlated with depression, type A behavior patterns, a very poor physical condition without sufficient sleep. Conclusion: Stress management program is strongly needed for these subjects working over 45 hours a week, with a very poor subjective physical condition, insufficient sleep, type A behavior patterns and signs of severe depression. Further longitudinal study is recommended to show the effect of such worker's stress management program to mitigate job-related stress.

  • Behavioral sequences of the medaka (Oryzias latipes) were continuously investigated through an automatic image recognition system in response to medaka treated with the insecticide and medaka not treated with the insecticide, diazinon (0.1 mg/l) during a 1 hour period. The observation of behavior through the movement tracking program showed many patterns of the medaka. After much observation, behavioral patterns were divided into four basic patterns: active-smooth, active-shaking, inactive-smooth, and inactive-shaking. The "smooth" and "shaking" patterns were shown as normal movement behavior. However, the "shaking" pattern was more frequently observed than the "smooth" pattern in medaka specimens that were treated with insecticide. Each pattern was classified using classification methods after the feature choice. It provides a natural way to incorporate prior knowledge from human experts in fish behavior and contains the information in a logical expression tree. The main focus of this study was. to determine whether the decision tree could be useful for interpreting and classifying behavior patterns of the medaka.
