  • 과수 및 원예식물을 가해하는 나무좀류를 확인하기 위해 1980-82년간 기주식물별로 분포상태를 조사하였으며 동정된 6종, 미동정 1종을 정리하였고 이들중 Cryphalus malus Nijima, Hypothenemus eruditus Westwood와 Xylesandrus borealis Nobuchi 등 3종은 우리나라 미기록종이었다.

First record of two erotylid species of Triplax (Coleoptera: Erotylidae: Tritomini) from Korea

  • Two fungivorous Korean erotylid beetles-Triplax ainonia Lewis, 1887 and Triplax nagaoi Nakane, 1977 in the tribe Tritomini-were recorded for the first time from Korea. All Korean Triplax members are associated with the fruiting bodies of higher fungi and fungus-grown bark. Re-description, key to the species of Korean Triplax, photographs of adults, and line drawings of diagnostic characters and host fungi records are provided.

Movement of Monochamus alternatus Hope (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Adults among Young Black Pine Trees in a Screen Cage (망실 내 해송 묘목에서 솔수염하늘소 성충의 이동에 관한 연구)

  • Movement of adult Monochamus alternatus was investigated on young black pine, Pinus thunbergii, trees for about one month in a screen cage. Number of pine trees to which M. alternatus females and males moved during the experimental period was $6.4{\pm}1.4$ and $7.2{\pm}1.5$ out of 15 trees, respectively. Adult females and males moved to $0.2{\pm}0.1$ and $0.3{\pm}0.1$ tree per day, respectively. A 74.6 and 80.7% of adult females and males moved at night (17:00-08:00) to other trees. After moving, most beetles (72.6% of females and 76.0% of males) stayed on the tree to which they moved for one to two days. Some beetles stayed for up to seven days.

  • The current market size of insect industry in Korea is estimated at 300 million dollars and more than 500 local farms are related to many insect industry. One of the strong candidates for insect industry is Korean horn beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma. Early this year, we reported a viral disease extremely fatal to A. dichotoma larvae. While we were proceeding a nationwide investigation of this disease, it was informed that similar disease symptom has been occurred occasionally during past over 10 years. The symptom can be easily confused with early stage of bacterial infection or physiological damage such as low temperature and high humidity. A peroral infection with the purified virus to healthy larvae produced a result that only 21% of larvae survived and became pupae. Although some of the survived adult beetle was deformational, many of them had no abnormal appearance and even succeeded in mating. Later, these beetles were examined if they were carrying the virus, and all except one were confirmed as live virus carrier. This implies that these beetles may fly out and spread the disease to the nature. We found the evidence for this possibility by collecting a few wild A. dichotoma larvae which were virus infected, near two local farms rearing A. dichotoma larvae. So far, transovarial transmission of this virus to the eggs, or horizontal transmission to other commercially reared insects is not known yet.

Comparison of Four Major Scarab Beetles, Ectinohoplia rufipes, Adoretus tenuimaculatus, Exomala orientalis and Popillia quadriguttata in Golf Courses (골프장 발생 주요 풍뎅이 4종, 주황긴다리풍뎅이, 주둥무늬차색풍뎅이, 등얼룩풍뎅이, 녹색콩풍뎅이의 비교)

  • Four major scarab beetles, Ectinohoplia rufipes, Adoretus tenuimaculatus, Exomala orientalis and Popillia quadriguttata were obserbved in golf courses. Morphological characters of adults and larvae, feeding habit, mounds by grubs, and outbreak time were inbestigated. Body lengths of E. rufipes and A. tenuimaculatus were 11.5mm and 9.7-11.3mm, respectively and those of E. orientalis and P. quadriguttata were 8.0-13.5mm and 7.6-12.7mm, respectively. Adult of E. rufipes had a tendency to raise hind legs during the feeding and mating but showed no death feigning. On the contrary, A. tenuimaculatus adult did not raise its hind legs during the feding and showed death feigning and dropped to earth when disturbed. E. orientalis adults were mainly found from the flowers of chestnut trees in the daytime and P. quadriguttata adults were chiefly found from soft leaves of herbaceous plants in golf courses. White grubs of E. rufipes and A. tenuimaculatus did not have longitudinal and transversal seatae on anal part but setae on the raster were hooked. The shape of anal slit was Y-shape in E. rufipes and crescent-shape in A. tenuimaculatus. White grubs of E. orientalis had ten to sixteen longitudinal setae on raster and those of P. quadriguttata had medially two conspicuous rows of six or seven shorter straight setae forming a V. Adults of E. rufipes mainly fed on front part of leaves but those of A. tenuimaculatus fed on hind part of leaves. Mounds by earthworms and white grubs were different depending on species. Earthworm piled up sticky soil around exit hole but E. orientalis adult scattered soil one part of exit hole and A. tenuimaculatus adult scattered soil evenly around exit hole. Outbreak time of E. rufipes and A. tenuimaculatus was early May and that of E. orientalis and P. quadriguttata was late May.

Distribution of Ground-beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in Mt. Gabjangsan, Korea (갑장산의 보행성 딱정벌레류 분포에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to carry out with the structure of ground-beetles(Coleoptera: Carabidae) community surveyed depending on altitude in Mt. Gabjangsan, Sangju, from August 2004 to October 2004. The 1,439 individuals in 15 species of 4 families were found in the survey. In the monthly taxa diversity, September of 697 individuals and 12 species was higher than August of 102 individuals and 8 species and October of 640 individuals and 5 families. The diversity index and evenness index were the lowest, but richness index was the highest in 800m altitude. The richness index was the highest in 400m altitude and evenness index was the highest in loom altitude. Synuchus cycloderus is a dominant species in 300-800m altitude and Synuchus nitidus is a dominant species in loom altitude. In these results, indicator insects for the evaluation of golf courses environment in mountain area construction were selected as S. cycloderus and S. nitidus.
