Very few articles are available on geologic structure and genesis of Sangdong scheelite-deposits in spite of the fact that the mine is one of the leading tungsten producer in the world. Sangdong scheelite deposits, embedded in Myobong slate of Cambrian age at the southem limb of the Hambaek syncline which strikes $N70{\sim}80^{\circ}W$ and dips $15{\sim}30^{\circ}$ northeast, comprise six parallel veins in coincide with the bedding plane of Myobong formation, namely four footwall veins, a main vein, and a hangingwall vein. Four footwall veins are discontinuous and diminish both directions in short distance and were worked at near surface in old time. Hangingwall vein is emplaced in brecciated zone in contact plane of Myobong slate and overlying Pungchon limestone bed of Cambrian age and has not been worked until recent. The main vein, presently working, continues more than 1,500 m in both strike and dip sides and has a thickness varying 3.5 to 5 m. Characteristic is the distinct zonal arrangement of the main vein along strike side which gives a clue to the genesis of the deposits. The zones symmetrically arranged in both sides from center are, in order of center to both margins, muscovite-biotite-quartz zone, biotite-hornblende-quartz zone and garnet-diopside zone. The zones grade into each other with no boundary, and minable part of the vein streches in the former two zones extending roughly 1,000 m in strike side and over 1,100 m in dip side to which mining is underway at present. The quartz in both muscovite-biotite-quartz and biotite-hornblende-quartz zones is not network type of later intrusion, but the primary constituent of the special type of rock that forms the main vein. The minable zone has been enriched several times by numerous quartz veins along post-mineral fractures in the vein which carry scheelite, molybdenite, bismuthinite, fluorite and other sulfide minerals. These quartz veins varying from few centimeter to few tens of centimeter in width are roughly parallel to the main vein although few of them are diagonal, and distributed in rich zones not beyond the vein into both walls and garnet-diopside zone. Ore grade ranges from 1.5~2.5% $WO_3$ in center zone to less than 0.5% in garnet-diopside zone at margin, biotite-hornblende-quartz zone being inbetween in garde. The grade is, in general, proportional to the content of primary quartz. Judging from regional structure in mid-central parts of South Korea, Hambaek syncline was formed by the disturbance at the end of Triassic period with which bedding thrust and accompanied feather cracks in footwall side were created in Myobong slate and brecciated zone in contact plane between Myobong slate and Pungchon limestone. These fractures acted as a pathway of hot solution from interior which was in turn differentiated in situ to form deposit of the main vein with zonal arrangement. The footwall veins were developed along feather cracks accompanied with the main thrust by intrusion of biotite-hornblende-quartz vein and the hangingwall vein in shear zone along contact plane by replacement. The main vein thus formed was enriched at later stage by hydrothermal solutions now represented by quartz veins. The main mineralization and subsequent hydrothermal enrichments had probably taken place in post-Triassic to pre-Cretaceous periods. The veins were slightly displaced by post-mineral faults which cross diagonally the vein. This hypothesis differs from those done by previous workers who postulated that the deposits were formed by pyrometasomatic to contact replacement of the intercalated thin limestone bed in Myobong slate at the end of Cretaceous period.
The physical and mechanical properties of the sedimentary rocks deposited in Taegu and Kyongbuk region have been measured in the laboratory and at the field. Four kinds of rocks such as the shale, the mudstone, the siltstone and the sandstone were the object of this study. In sedimentary rock joint, bedding made it impossible to extract cores for uniaxial compressive test. Some correlations between the uniaxial compressive strength and the other characteristic values such as Point load index, Schmidt hammer rebound, Brazilian strength, P-wave velocity and Absorption ratio are made. The chemical and mineral compositions are also investigated by the XRF and XRD analysis. In addition, the weathering grade of rocks are classified by the quantitative indices of Point load index, Schmidt hammer rebound and Absorption ratio.

The directional response of strength and deformation on the rocks acting by external loads is called by strength and deformability anisotropy, respectively. Peak strength and its failure criteria of anisotro rocks have been studied and reported. Many authors have investigated in detail the behavior of triaxial peak strength of anisotropic rocks(Jaeger 1960, McLamore & Gray 1967, Hoek & Brown 1980, Ramamurthy & Rao 1985). They concluded that the triaxial strength of anisotropic rocks varies according to the inclination of discontinuity in specimens. And, the minimun triaxial strength occurs in the specmen with 60° of inclination angle ; and specimens with 0° or 90° inclination have maximum triaxial strength. Based on the experimental result, the behavior triaxial strength is investigated. The triaxial compression tests due to the angle bedding plane have been conducted and the material constants, 'm' and 's', cohesion and angle of friction and nonlinear strength parameters to fit for the failure criterion were derived from the regression analysis. And, the experimental date are employed to examine three existing failure criteria for peak strength, provided by Jaeger, McLamore and Hoek & Brown and Ramamurthy & Rao. For a shale, the suitability of the failure criteiria of triaxial peak strength for anisotropic rocks is discussed.
A total of 113 samples (basalts, tuffs, and siltstones from coal-bearing sediments) was collected from 14 sites of the Tertiary Changgi basin in southeastern Korea, and studied palaeomagnetically. Site-mean declination of the ChRM from 5 sites was found to be deflected clockwise about $30^{\circ}$. Other 5 sites showed no vertical-axis deflection of ChRM direction. In consideration of previous palaeomagnetic data from other Tertiary basins in the vicinity, it is interpreted that the deflection of ChRM directions has been caused by NNW-SSE simple shear associated with the opening of the East Sea, and the time of rotation should be about 16 Ma. Other 2 sites showed counterclockwise deflection of site-mean ChRM. These sites might be located among lager tectonic blocks which were rotating clockwise. AMS (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility) study revealed $NE{\rightarrow}SW$ directed magnetic lineation at two tuffaceous sites. This might indicate flow direction of tuffs during the time of deposition. Most of the other sites showed load-foliation lying subparallel to the bedding plane. This must have been caused by gravitational loading acted vertically to the strata.
Feature enhancement combined with some pattern recognition techiques were applied to the Remote Sensing Data for geological mapping with particular emphasis on non-me-tallic ore deposits and their related geologies. The area chosen is north of Ulsan, the size of which is about 400km$^2$. The geology of the area consists mainly of volcanics, volcanic sediments and clastic sediments of Miocene age, underlain by the Kyungsang sediments of Cretaceous age. The mineralization occurs in tuffs or along the bedding plane of tuffaceous sediments, the main products of which are Kaolinite and Bentonite. The outcrops or mine dumps in the study area were most effectively extracted on the histrogram normalized image of TM Band 1 and 2, due to their high reflectivity. These may be confused with some artificial features, like slate roof complex of the poultry farm or cement ground, which should be classified by field checking. Detailed examination of enhancment image combined with pattern recognition techniques made enable to classify different rocks and thereby extract volcanic products which are mainly related to non-metallic ore deposits in the study area.
Recently, plane failure mode occurred frequently along the bedding plane having low angle dip about 20 degree when cutting slopes were constructed in sedimentary rock region of the Gyeongsang Basin. Landslide of the Whangryeong Mountain which was occurred at Busan Metropolitan City in 1999 belongs to the category mentioned above. Reconstruction for cutting slope of the Whangryeong Mountain has finished in 2000 and final grade of reconstructed cutting slope is 1:2.0. To analyze slope failure mode for landslide of the Whangryeong Mountain, various analyses were performed such as in-situ investigation and test, drilling, laboratory test, aerial photograph interpretation, X-ray diffraction analysis, and slope stability analysis using Stereographic Projection and Limit Equilibrium methods. As the result, it is identified that tension cracks had been developed one year before the landslide took place. The tension crack semis to be formed by merging several joint sets. It appears that failure blocks broke down along the sliding planes of different layers. Risk of plane failure is conformed as a result of stability analysis using Stereographic Projection and Limit Equilibrium methods in case that greenish gray tuffaceous shales, regared as sliding planes, are weathered. From now on, a detailed investigation is needed for the thin layers which is sensitive to weathering, and stability analysis for this layer is performed at cut slope construction site having similar geological condition.
The Sinyangri Formation crops out in the vicinity of the Seongsan Peninsula, Cheju Island. Based on sedimentary structures, texture and composition, the lithologic sequence has been classified, in ascending stratigraphic order, into three lithofacies: parallel laminated sandstone facies (Facies I): conglomerate facies(Facies Il); and cross stratified sandstone facies (F acies Ill). Wedge-to-parallel, seaward-inclined in low angle less than 10$^{\circ}$lamina -sets with alternations of coarseand fine-grained sediments in the Facies I are the characteristic sedimentary structures in the foreshore depositional environment. Grains of this faciesare well sorted with good roundness compared with the other two facies, partly showing inverse graded bedding. Facies II,largely composed of claset-supported,very poorly-sorted conglomerates, does not pinch out but occurs continuously along the Sinyangri beach.Interstitial spaces between the clasts are mostly infilled with volcanic-ash and small amounts of well-rounded shell fragments.Maximum bed thickness as well as the size of imbedded basaltic clasts decreases to the south(toward Sinyangri). Large clasts with parallel lamination originated from the underlying Facies i,are generally elongated parallel to the bedding plane and display no systematic horizontal variations in size indicative of in-situ clasts. In view of the facts above it seems that large gravels from the basaltic rocks are transgressive lag conglomerates which are partly affected by the combination of longshore currents and propagating wave.Local occurrence of cross-strata dipping toward the south in the upper part of Facies IIreinforces the evidence of the action of longshore currents. Facies IIIis characterized by bidirectional trough cross-starifiction and wave ripples associated with the upper shoreface(surfzone) environments. In summary, the Sinyangri Formation represents the depositional environments of foreshore to upper shoreface truncated by disconformity between Facies Iand II.
In this study we propose that the ‘enclaves’ which occur in the granites should be translated into ‘Po-yu-am’in Korean. Also we suggest some criteria to discriminate the mafic microgranular enclaves (MME) of igneous origin from the xenoliths, which possibly come from the plutonic, volcanic and sedimentary country rocks. The color of the MME is gray green∼dark gray and the mineral grains are fine and equigranular. The MME are generally of ellipsoidal shape and can be easily found within the granites. They do not show any evidence of contact metamorphism by granite host. On the other hand. the xenoliths are generally of angular shape and are of the same mineral assemblage and texture as the country rocks around the granites. The distribution of the xenoliths is mostly concentrated along the intruding plane of the granites near the country rocks. The xenoliths were partly metamorphosed by the granite intrusion. The xenoliths from the plutonic rocks are easily distinguished from the MME in terms of their angular shape and coarser grain size, but they do not have any metamorphic mineral assemblage and texture. The xenoliths from the tuffaceous rocks show angular shape and porphyritic and pyroclastic textures. Large size xenoliths from the sedimentary rocks specifically preserve bedding structure which are indicative of the sedimentary strata. However, the sedimentary xenoliths of small size are often difficult to distinguish from the MME. Metamorphic minerals and texture are a useful key to discriminate the small-sized sedimentary xenoliths from the MME. In summary the xenoliths in the granites can be megascopic ally distinguished from the MME by comparing their color, shape, grain size and remnant original structure like bedding. Additionally the metamorphic mineral assemblage and texture are microscopic discriminators between the xenoliths and the MME in the granites.
Lead bas been found in the groundwater in Door County, Wiscorsin, with temporally and spatially irregular distribution in concentration. Correlation coeffidents were calculated among lead indicators in groundwater(frequency of lead detections, mean and maximum concentration of lead detections) and seven independent variables(stucture and geographic factors of wells, hydrogeological factors at lead-arsenate mixing sites and the level of soil contamination) which are possibly related to the lead level in groundwater. The significance of relationships was determined statistically by a t-test at the 90% confidence level, and indicated that the spatially located lead-arsenate mixing sites provided the lead in groundwater in the study area. A total of 112 groundwater samples were collected from 5 house wells with previous lead detects. Lead was detected in partides on ifiter papers with $0.45{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ pore size, but not in filtrates. The result of chemical analysis for lead indicates that lead is associated with partides in groundwater in Door County. Subsequently, the irregular distribution of lead in the county results from the transport of particulate lead along the advective groundwater movement through the preferential pathways sucn as vertical and bedding-plane joints.
Geological survey on the occurrence of copper oxide in Suparaura area around Abancay in the south-central part of Peru had been carried out. Geology of the area is composed of granitoids such as granodiorite, tonalite and andesitic porphyry related to Tertiary igneous activity, Ferrobamba formation with Cretaceous limestone and sandstone in descending order. Red sandstone is widely distributed and emplaced with their attitude of $N70^{\circ}W$ strike and $60^{\circ}NE$ dip. Copper oxides were mineralized along the bedding plane of red sandstone with maximum width of 30 cm. Ore-body structure bounding red sandstone strata have different occurrence characteristics with generally known porphyry system in terms of alteration, mineral assemblage and occurrence mode. Therefore, it is thought to be stratiform sediment-hosted copper (SSC) deposits genetically corresponding to Mississippi-valley type from preliminary study.
