  • This paper deals with the exact solution of surface gravity waves in an ocean with irregular bed topography. In order to obtain water surface elevation and run-up of infra-gravity waves when the bed is either wavy or exponential, closed form solutions are obtained. Numerical computations indicate that when solitary wave or sinusoidal wave conditions are applied at the boundary, water surface elevation attains near Gaussian profile.

  • Under the attack of storm waves, there are many destructions of coastal structures in the forms of sinking and sliding. There types of destructions will be in close relation to the dynamic behavior of sand bed around the structures. Form this point of view, in this pear, we investigate the characteristics of the pore water pressure and effective stresses in the highly saturated sand bed under oscillating water pressure theoretically. The results indicate that the oscillating water pressure induce the notable drop of strength of and bed around the structure under certain condition.

Measurement and Analysis of Bed Shear Stresses in Compound Open Channels using the Preston Tube (프레스톤튜브를 이용한 복단면 하도의 하상전단응력 측정 및 분석)

  • Hydraulic issues such as flow resistance, side wall correction, sediment, erosion and deposition, and channel design have close relation with distribution of bed shear stresses but the measurement of the distribution of bed shear stresses is not easy. In this study the Preston tube which makes possible relatively simple measurement of bed shear stresses is used to analyze the characteristics of bed shear distribution in compound open channels with different depth ratio. The Preston tubes are made and calibrated to develop the calibration formula and then they are applied to measure bed shear stress distribution in 5 cases depth ratio condition of compound channels. The results are compared with former experiment data, and characteristics of bed shear stress distributions are studied with different channel scales and Reynolds numbers. Although bed shear distributions with depth ratio show overall agreement with former studies, some differences are verified in bed shear variation, formation of inflection point in main channel, and distribution near floodplain junction which are due to high Reynolds number. Through the study applicability of the Preston tubes are also verified and characteristics of bed shear distribution in compound channels are suggested with Reynolds number and depth ratio.

  • $N_2O$ decomposition characteristics of dual bed mixed metal oxide catalytic system was investigated. The partial oxidation of methane at first reactor of dual bed catalytic system was performed over Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) catalyst under the optimized condition of $8,000h^{-1}$ GHSV, gas ratio ($CH_4:O_2=5:1$) at $500^{\circ}C$. In the dual bed system investigated herein, the second catalyst bed was employed for the $N_2O$ decomposition using product of partial oxidation of methane at first bed. An excellent $N_2O$ conversion activity even at lower temperature ($<250^{\circ}C$) was obtained with Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) or Co-Rh-Zr-Al (1/0.2/0.3/1) catalyst by combining Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) hydrotalcite catalyst for the partial oxidation of methane in a dual-bed system. The $N_2O$ conversion activity is drastically reduced in the presence of oxygen in second bed of a dual-bed system over Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) catalyst at $300^{\circ}C$.

Effect of Lower Bed Height on Collapse Velocity in the Two-Stage Bubbling Fluidized-Bed with a Standpipe for Solid Transport (고체 수송관이 있는 2 단 기포 유동층에서 붕괴 속도에 대한 하단 층 높이의 영향)

  • The effect of lower bed height on the collapse velocity was investigated for a two-stage bubbling fluidizedbed (0.1 m in diameter, 1.2 m high) connected with a standpipe (0.025 m in diameter) for solid transport. Air was used as fluidizing gas and mixture of coarse (< $1000{\mu}m$ in diameter and $3625kg/m^3$ in apparent density) and fine (< $147{\mu}m$ in diameter and $4079kg/m^3$ in apparent density) particles as solid particles. Mixing ratio of fine particles, height of the lower bed and the distributor of the upper bed were considered as experimental variables. The collapse velocity increased with static height of the lower bed. However, the effect decreased as the mixing ratio of fine particles increased. The effect seemed to be attributed to the increase in height of the dense layer of coarse particles that prevented the gas from flowing into the standpipe, not in pressure drop for the standpipe, as the bed height increased. The collapse velocity decreased a little as the pressure drop of the distributor of the upper bed increased. An improved correlation was proposed for predicting the collapse velocity.

Estimation methods of maximum scour depth in steep gravel-bed bend channel (급경사 자갈하상 만곡수로의 최대세굴심 산정공식 평가)

  • The existing methods to estimate the maximum scour depth in the bend of steep gravel bed channel have been evaluated by the hydraulic movable-bed experiments. In the $90^{\circ}$ bend steep-slope channel paved with the fluvial gravels which are uniform in size and have a mean diameter of 43mm, the maximum scour depths due to the flow discharge and the gradient of bed slope have been investigated and compared with the scour depth computed from the equations. The local scour has occurred in conditions that the bed slope is steeper than 0.02 and the $F_r$ is greater than 0.95. Except Lacey's equation and Zeller's equation, the existing methods computing the maximum scour depth overestimate the maximum scour depth in the steep channel with the very coarse gravel bed. However, Lacey's equation with the bed material size and Zeller's equation considering the approach channel gradient and the bend angle may be relatively used to estimate the scour depth in bend of the steep gravel-bed river.

  • Background There are various reconstructive options for nail bed defects. However, it is challenging not to leave a deformity. In this study, we investigated differences in outcomes depending on the reconstruction method, attempted to determine which method was better, and analyzed other factors that may affect outcomes. Methods The long-term outcomes of nail bed reconstruction were reviewed retrospectively. We performed three types of reconstruction depending on the defect type: composite grafts of severed segments, nail bed grafts from the big toe, and two-stage surgery (flap coverage first, followed by a nail bed graft). Subsequent nail growth was evaluated during follow-up, and each outcome was graded based on Zook's criteria. The reconstruction methods were statistically analyzed. Other factors that could contribute to the outcomes, including age, the timing of surgery, germinal matrix involvement, defect size, and the presence of bone injuries, were also compared. Results Twenty-one patients (22 digits) who underwent nail bed reconstruction were evaluated. The type of reconstruction method did not show a significant relationship with the outcomes. However, patients who sustained injuries in the germinal matrix and patients with a defect larger than half the size of the nail bed had significantly worse outcomes than the comparison groups. Conclusions The results suggest that no operative method was superior to another in terms of the outcomes of nail bed reconstruction. Nevertheless, involvement of the germinal matrix and defect size affected the outcomes.

Design and Evaluation of a Low-floor Care-bed for Elderly People (고령자용 저상 요양침대의 설계 및 평가)

  • It was hard for a conventional care-bed to be realized to a low-floor position due to a complex actuation mechanism installed under the mattress support platform. In this paper a mechanism design to set a low-floor position as well as to adjust back- and leg-rest angles was proposed. A dual motor was applied to the back- and leg-rest mechanism of which design parameters were determined by an optimal method. An elevation mechanism was also designed to enlarge a limited stroke range up to two times of its original stroke using a pulley mechanism. An evaluation test was performed by five healthy subjects ($24.4{\pm}0.5yrs.$) when going up from a floor position to a preset best position which was set to the 240mm height for a prototype low-floor bed and to the 600mm height for a conventional bed. As a result, the moving distance was 38% lower than the conventional bed when the subject used the low-floor bed. It showed that the low-floor care-bed reduced physical burdens and was effective to assist activities of daily living of the elderly people.

A Study on the Kinetics and the Biogas Formation for Organic Wastewater Treatment in Anaerobic Fluidized-Bed Bioreactor and New Model AFPBBR (혐기성 유동층 생물 반응기와 새로운 모델의 AFPBBR에서 유기성폐수 처리시 Biogas 생성과 반응상수에 관한 연구)

  • The anaerobic digestion of organic synthetic wastewater in anaerobic fluidized bed bioreactor (AFBBR) and anaerobic fluidized packed bed bioreactor (AFPBBR) was studied. This study was conducted to evaluate efficiency and reliability of two reactor. Experiment was performed to find the effect of upflow rate with AFBBR and the height of packed bed with AFPBBR. As a result, this program obtained several conclusion. These are given as follows: As applied the upflow rate increased in AFBBR the produced volume of biogas increased, while the gas production and COD removal decreased at above 0.3 m$^3$/h. When a upflow rate is 0.4 m$^3$/h in AFBBR the volatile suspended solid (VSS) became significantly increased. At an organic loading rate from 0.1 to 0.4 of upflow rate in AFBBR, the methane yield was 1.5584 m$^3$CH$_4$/kgCOD removed, and the observed cell yield coefficient was 0.0933 gVSS/gCOD. In case of AFPBBR, the results showed also that 20 cm of height of packed bed was superior to other in the aspect ot biogas production, the content of methane and COD removal. At 20 cm of height, the profile of microorganisms was stable, while at 30 cm the VSS of effluent became higher than AFBBR. Though COD removal of AFPBBR increased with packed bed, COD removal deteriorate with over packing because the loss of pressure became higher in the reactor. At an organic loading rate from 20 to 40 cm of packed bed in-AFPBBR, the methane yield was 2.5649 m$^3$CH$_4$/kgCOD removed, and the observed cell yield coefficient was 0.0506 gVSS/gCOD. Based upon the results obtained, it is suggested that AFBBR and AFPBBR is the most effective conditions at 0.3 m3/h of upflow rate, the 20cm of packed bed, respectively. Thin Split-Thickness Toe Nail-Bed Grafts for Nail Bed Defects in Subungal Exostosis: Two Cases Report (얇은 부분층 조갑상 이식을 통한 조갑하 외골종의 치료: 2예 보고)

  • We reviewed the clinical features of 2 patients who underwent surgery for subungal exostosis, focusing on postoperative deformity of the nail. The lesion destroyed the nail bed and was excised with a direct approach. then thin split-thickness sterile matrix graft was done after excision of the tumor because the defect of the nail bed was large. Good postoperative appearance of the nail was obtained by thin split-thickness sterile matrix graft. The use of thin split-thickness sterile matrix graft for the replacement of a nail bed defect can regain a smooth, adherent, and normal-looking nail and avoid donor-site morbidity. Thin split-thickness toe-nail bed graft is a good choice for the prevention of postoperative deformity.
