In order to improve the efficiency and reliability of the machine, the friction should be minimized. The most widely used method to minimize friction is to maintain the fluid lubrication state. However, we can reduce friction only up to a certain limit because of viscosity. As a result of several recent studies, surface texturing has significantly reduced the friction in highly sliding machine elements, such as mechanical seals and thrust bearings. Thus far, theoretical studies have mainly focused on isothermal/iso-viscous conditions and have not taken into account the heat generation, caused by high viscous shear, and the temperature conditions on the bearing surface. In this study, we investigate the effect of dimple depth and film-temperature boundary conditions on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication of textured parallel slider bearings. We analyzed the continuity equation, the Navier-Stokes equation, the energy equation, and the temperature-viscosity and temperature-density relations using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. We compare the temperature and pressure distributions at various dimple depths. The increase in oil temperature caused by viscous shear was higher in the dimple than in the bearing outlet because of the action of the strong vortex generated in the dimple. The lubrication characteristics significantly change with variations in the dimple depths and film-temperature boundary conditions. We can use the current results as basic data for optimum surface texturing; however, further studies are required for various temperature boundary conditions.
The quantitative analysis of bearing capacity with stone column-mat is not ease because the bearing capacity of stone column is affected by so many parameters. The bearing capacity of stone column is mainly governed by horizontal resistance along the interface with soil. Also, this foundation system is affected by geometric factors such as column spacing, embedment ratio and failure surface inclination. Therefore, in this study, critical length and the effect of failure surface inclination was studied with single and group end bearing stone columns by loading tests. Results of model tests are compared to the present theoretical methods and are examined with FEM analysis.

In this study, the mechanical behavior of very soft ground that is reinforced on the surface has been investigated with the aid of a series of numerical analyses. Key material properties of each dredged soft ground, reinforcement and backfill sand mat have been parametrically estimated in the numerical analysis. Along with the result of the study previously performed, a series of in-situ loading conditions and settlement exerted by surface reinforcing operation by construction vehicles has been numerically simulated. These result have been used to evaluate the limit bearing capacity for the unreinforced and reinforced soft ground. Also, the results of the numerical analysis obtained in this research were compared with Yamanouchi's empirical correlation for the limit bearing capacity. Engineering charts listed in this paper for estimating the limit bearing capacity provide field engineers with preliminary design tool for surface reinforcement of very soft ground.
Depending upon the combination of tolerances specified in the standards on bolt, nut and washer for high tension bolt sets, there arises center-to-center deviation between bolt and washer. This deviation nay cause loss of effective contact area between nut- and washer-faces, which leads to some dispersion of the torque coefficient K. By adapting circular arc surface instead of flat surface for the nut, it is shown through numerical analyses that the dispersion of the torque coefficient can be minimized. In this way, optimum radius of curvature of the nut bearing surface is proposed.

Burnishing, as a micro plastic working, is a finishing process used in conjuction with or in replacement of reaming, honing, lapping, and/or grinding. The tool which is a smooth, round steel ball slightly larger than the bore is pushed through pre-machined hole, leaving a closely controlled finish. The major application of the processes is to improve the geometric and mechanical properties of surface such as (1) dimensional accuracy, (2) surface roughness, (3) bearing ratio, (4) surface hardness, (5) wear resistance, (6) fatigue and corrosion resistance, etc. Therefore, this study carried out some experiments to illustrate the theoretical formula and to investigate surface accuracy (e.g. variation of diameter, surface roughness, bearing ratio) in accordance with the applied burnishing load.

The machining accuracy and performance is largely influenced by the static, dynamic and thermal characteristics of spindle systems in machine tools, because the spindle system is a intermedium for cutting force from tool and machine powef from motor. Large cutting force and power are transmitted by bearing with a point or line contact. So, the spindle system is the static and dynamic weakest point in machine structure. For improvement of static stiffness of spindle system can be changed design parameters, such as diameter of spindle, stiffness of bearing and bearing span. But for dynamic stiffness, the change of the design parameters are not useful. In this paper, the combined bearing arrangement is suggested for high damping spindle system. The combined bearing arrangement is composed of tandem double back to back arrangement type ball bearins and a high damping hydrostatic bearing. The variation of static deflection and amplitude in first natural frequency is evaluated with the location of hydrostatic bearing between front and rear ball bearing. The optimized location of hydrostatic bearing for high static and dynamic stiffness is determined rapidly and exactly using the mode shape and transfer function of spindle. The calculation of damping effect on vibration by unbalance of grinding wheel and pulley in optimized spindle system is carried out to verify the validity of the combined bearing arrangement. Finally, the simulation of grinding process show that the surface roughness of workpiece with high damping spindle system is 60% better than with ball bearing spindle system.

This study conducted shear strength test and plate bearing test to look into the characteristics of bearing capacity using geosynthetics case on forest road surface. The shear strength test showed that the internal friction angle at the time when geosynthetics was used was measured larger on average than that in the unreinforced case. Therefore, using geosynthetics case produced more bearing capacity reinforcement effect. The result from the comparison test of internal friction angle by geosynthetics type revealed that the internal friction angle at the time when geotextile case was used was measured larger. That was attributable to the difference between the area of the total cross section of geotextile made in type of non-woven fabric and its material. Plate bearing test showed that the settlement at the time when geosynthetics was used was measured smaller than that in the unreinforced case. Therefore, using geosynthetics produced more bearing power reinforcement effect. The result from the comparison test showed that geogrid case was measured smaller than geotextile case. Henceforth, It is seemed that it will be necessary to keep studying the reinforcement engineering and process of forest road surface which fits the characteristics and conditions of geosynthetics to prevent forest road demage.

Shot-peening effects on the fatigue behavior of bearing steel were investigated under the high cyclic loading. Hourglass shape specimens were made of bearing steel(JIS-SUJ2) for rotary bending fatigue tests. Two kinds of treatments were performed : a heat treatment and a shot-peened surface treatment after the heat treatment. The fracture surfaces of specimens were classified into two types of fracture mode : the surface fracture mode induced by a surface defect and the internal fracture mode induced by a nonmetallic inclusion. Inclusion depth and shape affected considerably the fatigue life. Shot-peening treatment improved much the fatigue life of the bearing steel under low and high levels of cyclic loads. Probabilistic-stress-life (P-S-N) curves were suggested for the reliable fatigue life estimation of the improved bearing steel.

This study presents a method for determining bearing stiffness and damping coefficients of air-lubricated slider bearing, and shows influences of air-bearing surface geometry(recess depth, crown an d pivot location) on flying attitude and dynamic characteristics. To derive the dynamic lubrication equation, the perturbation method is applied to the generalized lubrication equation which based on linearized Boltzmann equation. The generalized lubrication equation and the dynamic lubrication equation are converted to a control volume formulation, and then, the static and dynamic pressure distributions are calculated by finite difference method. The recess depth and crown of the slider show significantly influence on flying attitude and dynamic characteristics comparing with those of pivot location.

The Bearing preload units are used for stable rotational movements of high speed spindles. The feeding mechanism of the preload unit is important to prevent overheat of bearings and to keep constant bearing load under thermal deformation of spindle unit. In this study, ball slide guide and ball bush as feeding mechanism of preload unit are selected. The maximum static friction force, radial stiffness and damping ratio of ball slide guide with ball load, ball number and ball size are widely investigated. In conclusion, the surface of ball slide guide must be heat treated to reduce static friction force. The number and size of ball are increased to control sensitive bearing preload force.
