  • In this study, side-face blowout failure strength of high strength headed reinforcing bar, which is vertically anchoring between RC or SFRC members, is evaluated throughout pullout test. The major test parameters are content ratio of high strength steel fibers, strength of rebar, length of anchorage, presence of shear reinforcement, and the side concrete cover thickness planned to be 1.3 times of the rebar. In pullout test, tensile force was applied to the headed reinforcing bar with the hinged supports positioned 1.5 and 0.7 times the anchorage length on both sides of the headed reinforcing bar. As a result, the cone-shaped crack occurred where the headed reinforcing bar embedded and finally side-face blowout failure caused by bearing pressure of the headed reinforcing bar. The tensile strength of specimens increased by 13.0 ~26.2% with shear reinforcement. The pullout strength of the specimens increased by 3.6 ~15.4% according to steel fiber reinforcement. Increasing the anchoring length and shear reinforcement were evaluated to reduce the stress bearing ration of the total stress.

  • In this study, the effect of void formation resulting from gas hydrate dissociation or loss of some particles within soil structure on the strength of soil is examined. Beag-ma river sands with uniform gradation were used to simulate a gas hydrate bearing or washable soil structure. Empty capsules for medicine are used to mimic large voids, which are bigger than soil particle. Beag-ma river sand was miced with 8% cement ratio and 14% water content and compacted into a shear box. The number and direction embedded into a specimen. After 4 hours curing, a series of direct shear test is performed on the capsule embedded cemented sands. Shear strength of cemented sands with capsules depends on the volume and direction. The volume and direction formed by voids are most important factors in strength. A shear strength of a specimen with large voids decreases up to 39% of a specimen without void. The results of this study can be used to predict the strength degradation of gas hydrate bearing sediments after dissociation and loss of fine particles within soil structure.

  • The stability of a rotor-bearing system supported by swirl-controlled hybrid journal bearing with pair-type angled injection orifices is investigated for improvement of the whirl frequency ratio by allowing effective control of the tangential flow inside the bearing clearance, i.e., by achieving more freedom in controlling strength and direction of the supply tangential flow inside the bearing clearance. It is suggested that the system instability can be improved through the change of bearing dynamic characteristic parameters with the swirl control. The orifice diameter d$_0$ and recess injection angle $\alpha$ along with combinations of swirl/anti-swirl supply pressures and directions (3.0-3.0MPa, 4.0-2.0MPa, 2.0-4.0MPa) are selected for design parameters for swirl-controlled effective factors dependent on journal speeds (3000, 9000, 15000, 21000 rpm). It has been found that the orifice diameter do shows strong effects on effective maneuverability of direct-stiffness and direct damping values, while recess injection angle $\alpha$ results in substantial magnitude and direction of cross-stiffness. Specifically, recess injection parameters which are functions of angle of orifice feeding flow and recess dimensions showed very feasible effect on the stability of swirl-controlled rotor-bearing system.

  • A half open cross section built-up column, namely cold-formed thin-walled steel built-up column with 12-limbsection (CTSBC-12) is put forward. To deeply reveal the mechanical behaviors of CTSBC-12 under axial compression and put forward its calculation formula of axial bearing capacity, based on the previous axial compression experimental research, the finite element analysis (FEA) is conducted on 9 CTSBC-12 specimens, and then the variable parameter analysis is carried out. The results show the FEA is in good agreement with the experimental research, the ultimate bearing capacity error is within 10%. When the slenderness ratio is more than 96.54, the ultimate bearing capacity of CTSBC-12 decreases rapidly, and the failure mode changes from local buckling to global buckling. With the local buckling failure mode unchanged, the ultimate bearing capacity decreases gradually as the ratio of web height to thickness increases. Three methods are used for calculating the ultimate bearing capacity, the direct strength method of AISI S100-2007 gives result of ultimate axial load which is closest to the test and FEA results. But for simplicity and practicality, a simplified axial bearing capacity formula is proposed, which has better calculation accuracy with the slenderness ratio changing from 30 to 100.

  • Recently, the steel has been increaseingly used as an integrated part of high-rise buildings, which often composed of steel structures, steel reinforced concrete structures and composite structures. The steel base is designed to transfer the stresses induced from steel column to the reinforced concrete footing through the base plate. However, in the design of steel structures and steel reinforced concrete structure, it is generally difficult to evaluate the bearing strength of the steel base subjected to large axial force. Furthermore, the material used in steel base is quite different from those used in other connections and a load transferring mechanism of steel base is very complicated in nature. Therefore, a special attention must be placed in design and construction of steel base. In generally, the bearing strength test and research of the steel base subjected to concentrated load are carried out. But, in the design of the structures, uniaxial eccentric load is loaded to the steel base of the steel structures. In this research, the bearing strength and the me of failure considering eccentric loads and eccentric length, were experimented when eccentric load is loaded to the steel base of steel structures. Based on the test results, a basic design reference is suggested for a reasonable design of steel structures, steel reinforced concrete structures and composite structures.

  • In general, segment lining tunnel refers to a tunnel formed by connecting precast concrete segments as a ring and connecting such rings to each other in the longitudinal direction of the tunnel. As the structural properties of the segment lining is highly dependent on the behavior of the segment joints, thus correct modelling of joint behavior is crucial to understand and design the segment tunnel lining. When the tunnel is subjected to ground loads, the segment joint behaves like a hinge that resists rotation, and when the induced moment exceeds a certain limit of the rotation then it may enter into non-linear field. In understanding the effect of the segment joint on the lining behavior, a moment-rotation relationship of the segment joint was explored based on the Japanese practice and Janssen's approach commonly used in the actual design. This study also presents a method to determine the rotational stiffness of joint refer to the bearing strength. The rotation of the segment joint was estimated in virtual design conditions based on the existing models and the proposed method. And the sectional force of the segment lining and joint were calculated along with the estimated rotation. As the rotation at the segment joint increases, the joint contact area decreases, so the designer have to verify the segment joint for bearing strength as well. This paper suggests a consistent method to determine the rotational stiffness and bearing strength of joints.

  • For the purpose of Military means, explosion proof concrete, which protect the structures from the damage due to the explosion of bomb and maintain its shape, is required to develop. Therefore, in this paper, mechanical and explosionproof properties of concrete are tested under various steel fiber contents and member size. According to the experimental results, compressive, tensile and flexural strength go up with the increase of fiber contents. Energy bearing capacities is higher with the increase of fiber contents. Especially, it is confirmed that slurry infiltrated fiber concrete (SIFCON) gains in high strength and has high energy bearing capacities. SIFCON is expected to apply in the construction of explosion proof structures.

  • Reinforcement corrosion is one of the major problems in the durability of reinforced concrete structures exposed to aggressive environments. Deterioration caused by reinforcement corrosion reduces the durability and the safety margin of concrete structures, causing excessive costs in managing these structures safely. This paper aims to investigate the effects of reinforcement corrosion on the load bearing capacity deterioration of the corroded reinforced concrete structures. A new analytical method is proposed to predict the crack growth of cover concrete and evaluate the residual strength of concrete structures with corroded reinforcement failing in bond. The structural performance indicators, such as concrete crack growth and flexural strength deterioration rate, are assumed to be a stochastic process for lifetime distribution modelling of structural performance deterioration over time during the life cycle. The Weibull life evolution model is employed for analysing lifetime reliability and estimating remaining useful life of the corroded concrete structures. The results for the worked example show that the proposed approach can provide a reliable method for lifetime performance assessment of the corroded reinforced concrete structures.

  • Several soil parameters such as particle characteristics, geological element, drainage and loading conditions are influenced on the shear strength of soil. The characteristics of soil particles are important factor to the shear strength of soil. However, this component is not well considered in the determination of soil strength in Korea. The particle shape of sand was analyzed by utilizing SEM(Scanning Electron Micrograph) and compared its results in terms of aspect ratio, angularity and roughness. Based on the determined soil parameters, the ultimate bearing capacity of sandy ground was estimated by using Terzaghi bearing capacity equation.
