This paper describes a new, effective method developed at the National Research Council Canada for rolling element bearing incipient failure detection. This method can detect not only outer race damage, previously published, but also inner race damage with a 100% detection rate based on a sample size of 32. The prediction of the exact angular location of the damage spot along the raceway is illustrated and experimental confirmation is presented. For the first time, a statically measurable parameter for inner and outer race damage is introduced as a means of verifying other techniques which do not offer absolute proof, but resort only to "overwhelming evidence". A brief comparison with other methods such as Shock Pulse Method, Kurtosis Analysis and High Frequency Resonance Technique is presented. A computerized automatic monitoring system utilizing the new method is described and experimental results are presented.presented.
The effective case depth for case-hardened rolling bearing has been discussed. For this purpose, rolling contact fatigue tests for ball bearings built with inner race of various hardness values were conducted until L10 calculating rating life using a bearing life test machine under radial loading. Then, the distribution of residual stress below the inner raceway, which depended on the hardness value, was measured by X-ray diffraction. As a result, the linear relationship was established between the hardness value of the inner race and the theoretical shear stress evaluated at the depth where the residual stress disappeared below the inner raceway. Based on the relationship, it could be found that the factor of safety in bearing manufacturer’s rules for the effective case depth of case hardened rolling bearings was set higher. However, it could be also found that the hardness values at the depth where the maximum shearing stress acted below the raceway surface in a tapered roller bearing hardened by the carburizing process, were not sufficient for preventing plastic deformation under the basic dynamic load rating. Consequently, further efforts were still required to reduce or to disperse the contact load on the material design of a rolling bearing in order to prolong its life.

This paper presents theoretical analysis of the NRRO(the non-repeatable run-out) for a ball bearing with geometric imperfection. This imperfection contains ball size error, ball waviness, outer race waviness and inner race waviness. The 3D dynamic analysis of a ball bearing using the Newton-Raphson method is performed to calculate the displacement of shaft center. The radial and axial NRRO are simulated, and preload and clearance effects are investigated. Preload and clearance have significant effects on radial and axial NRRO of for miniature ball bearings.

In this paper an experimental review of condition monitoring method using time domain vibration signals and statically measured wave forms of a multi-components damaged ball bearing is presented first time. Many investigators studied already about vibration characteristics of a single point damaged ball bearing but they did not make efforts to verify vibration phenomena of a multi-components damaged one. Even in case of a tripple components damaged (i.e, outer race, inner race and rolling element) one, the high frequency resonance technique (HERT) and the displacement time domain technique can be also used for its fault detection. According to experimental results undertaken a static displacement measuring method, the defect locations of components can be proposed confidently with simple calculation of the rotating angles of each component.
In view of the effects of the hardness of material on fatigue, rolling contact fatigue process in hard metals seems to differ from it in soft metals. This paper has been aimed to compare the rolling contact fatigue process according to the hardness of materials. Rolling contact fatigue tests using the ball bearings assembled with the inner race of four different hardness have been carried out. In addition, residual stress and half-value breadth on/below the inner raceway during individual rolling contact fatigue have been measured by X-ray diffraction. The results of this study showed that the change of residual stress and half-value breadth during the rolling contact fatigue on race way in hard metals is the same as in soft metals. However, plastic deformation by rolling contact in hard metals is in microscopic scale but only for soft metals in macroscopic scale.
Induction motors' faults detection is almost a popular topic among researchers. Monitoring the output of motors is a key factor in detecting these faults. (Short-time) Fourier, (continuous, discrete) wavelet, and extended Park vector transformations are among the methods for fault detection. One major deficiency of these methods is not being able to detect the severity of faults that carry low energy information, e.g. in ball bearing system failure, there is absolutely no way to detect the severity of fault using Fourier or wavelet transformations. In this paper, the authors have applied the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) frequency-domain analysis to detect bearing faults in an induction motor. In other words, in discrete transform which the output signal is decomposed in several steps and frequency resolution increases considerably, the frequency-band analysis is performed and it will be verified that first of all, fault sidebands become more recognizable for detection in higher levels of decomposition, and secondly, the inner race bearing faults turn out easier in these levels; and all these matter because of eliminating the not-required high energy components in lower levels of decomposing.

This research presents an analytical model to characterize the ball bearing vibration due to the waviness in a rigid rotor supported by multi-row ball bearings considering centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of ball. The effects of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment are introduced to the kinematic constraints and force equilibrium equations. The waviness of ball and races is modeled by the superposition of sinusoidal function and it is introduced to position vectors of race curvature center to use the Hertzian contact theory in order to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force resulting from the waviness while the rotor has translational and angular motion. They can be determined by solving the nonlinear equations of motion with five degrees of freedom by using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg algorithm. The accuracy of this research is validated by comparing with the results of the prior researches. It characterizes the vibration frequencies resulting from the various kinds of waviness in rolling elements, the harmonic frequencies resulting from the nonlinear load-deflection characteristics of ball bearing resulting from the waviness interaction.

In this paper, a manufacturing process for a ball bearing outer race is studied by experiments and predictions, which is composed of four hot forging stages and the final hot or warm profile ring rolling stage. An analysis model and some assumption to simulate the profile ring rolling process is introduced. The entire process including the forging stages and ring rolling stage is simulated using a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method and the predictions are compared with the experiments in terms of major dimensions, showing that they are quantitatively very close to each other.
Defect frequencies of rolling element bearings are experimentally investigated utilizing the two-sided directional spectra of the complex-valued vibration signals measured from the outer ring of defective bearings. The directional spectra make it possible to discern backward and forward defect frequencies. The experimental results show that the directional zoom spectrum is superior to the conventional spectrum in identification of bearing defect frequencies, in particular the inner race defect frequencies.
