  • The theory for a new electromagnetically biased diskless combined radial and axial magnetic bearing is developed. A typical magnetic bearing system is composed of two radial magnetic bearings and an axial magnetic bearing. The axial magnetic bearing with a large axial disk usually limits rotor dynamic performance and makes assembling and disassembling difficult for maintenance work. This paper proposes a novel electromagnet biased integrated radial-axial magnetic bearing without axial disk. This integrated magnetic bearing uses two axial coils to provide the bias flux to the radial and axial air gaps of the combined bearing. The axial magnetic bearing unit in this combined magnetic bearing utilizes reluctance forces developed in the non-uniform air gaps such that the axial disk can be removed from the bearing unit. The 4-pole homopolar type radial magnetic bearing unit is also designed and analyzed. Three dimensional finite element model for the bearing is also developed and analyzed to illustrate the diskless combined magnetic bearing.

  • To get accurate vibration analysis of rotor-bearing systems, finite element models of high speed rotating shaft, unbalance disk, and fluid film journal bearing are developed. The study includes the effects of rotary inertia, gyroscopic moment, damping, shear deformation, and axial torque in the same model. It does not include the axial force effect, but the extension is straighforward. The finite elements developed can be used in the analysis design of any type of multiple rotor bearing system. To show the accuracy of the models, numerical examples are demonstrated.

  • A detailed rotordynamic design analysis is performed with a turbo-chiller compressor rotor-bearing system. A pinion is machined into a compressor shaft and the pinion is driven by a bull gear to a rated speed of 14,600 rpm. Utilizing a finite element method each bearing loads are calculated considering various gear loadings as well as the rotor weight itself. A Partial bearing and a 3-Lobe bearing are designed as the compressor impeller out-board bearing and in-board bearing, respectively. Finally a complex rotordynamic analysis of the compressor rotor-bearing system is carried out to evaluate the system whirl natural frequencies, stabilities, and unbalance responses.

  • In this paper, we propose a bearing redundant coordinates and decoupled PD controller for 5-axes active magnetic bearing system, which consists of two bearing parts such as three-pole hybrid active magnetic bearing for stabilize the radial direction and ring-type permanent magnetic bearing stabilizing in axial and tilting motion. Based on derived system equation with decoupled control scheme, we conduct the modal analysis and measure of modal controllability and observability.

  • The unbalance response analysis is one of the essential area in the forced vibration analysis of rotor bearing systems because of it usefulness in balancing and diagnosis as well as identification of parameters involved in rotor bearing systems. However some unbalance responses are not measurable due to the fact that rotor bearing systems are often encapsulated by fixtures or safety protectors. In the present paper, an efficent estimation scheme for unmeasured unbalance responses in rotor bearing systems is developed. The fundamental fearture of the proposed method is characterized by the linear formulae to estimate the unbalance responses from the measured unbalance responses and the finite element auxilliary model equation which is constructed to be identical to the prototype excluding the uncertain parameters such as bearing coefficients. The identification formulae for bearing parameters are also derived by using the unbalance response and the finite elements auxiliary model. Simulation is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The theory for a new electromagnetically biased combined radial and axial magnetic bearing is developed. This combined magnetic bearing uses two axial coils to provide the bias flux to the radial and axial air gaps of the combined bearing. One dimensional magnetic circuit model for this combined magnetic bearing is developed and analyzed such that flux densities and magnetic forces can be obtained. Three dimensional finite element model for the bearing is also developed and analyzed. Numerical analysis shows that the calculated magnetic forces from 1D model are well matched with those from the finite element model.

  • This research investigates how characteristics of ball bearing affect non-repeatable runout(NRRO) in a HDD spindle system at elevated temperature. It shows that the elevated temperature results in the increase of bearing contact angle and the decrease of bearing deformation due to the different thermal expansion rate of the components of the HDD spindle system. The increase of contact angle at elevated temperature is so small that the variation of bearing frequencies is negligible. On the other hand, the decrease of bearing deformation at elevated temperature reduces the stiffness of ball bearing and the natural frequencies of HDD spindle system consequently, which changes the amplitude and the frequency distribution of NRRO.

  • Increasing the density magnetic recording of a hard disk drive needs to improve position control of a slider. We have troubles analyzing position of a slider by nonlinear property of pivot ball bearing. Many researches analyze a hard disk drive to change pivot ball bearing part from balls to springs. Pivot ball bearing operates by rotation and movement of balls. This study considers Hertzian contact force when balls contact with outer race to analyze nonlinear movement of a ball bearing. Experiment of this study measures movement of a circular center of a pivot ball bearing. We also verify the simulation results and the experiment results.

  • This paper introduces a new self-bearing motor which combines a homopolar step motor and a passive magnetic bearing. Compared with conventional self-bearing motors which are mostly based on the theory of active magnetic bearings and therefore have some difficulties in design of the complicated flux distribution and control of the levitation force and the torque independently, the proposed self-bearing motor has a very simple and novel structure and operating principle. for the levitation, it works just like passive magnetic bearings which use the repulsive force between permanent magnets. On the other hand, its rotation principle is quite similar to that of a conventional homopolar step motor. In this paper, we introduce the basic structure and the operating principle in detail, and show some results of FEM analysis to predict the performance of the proposed self-bearing motor and further, to get the optimal design parameters.

  • This paper is presented for the performance of the Fluid Dynamic Bearing(FDB) by the groove design and the tooling condition. Recently, spindle motors which require smaller size, lower sound noise, lower vibration, and higher speed of the rotation have been placed in high value-added products including Digital Lightening Processors(DLP), Hard Disk Drives(HDD), and ODDs. The spindle motors using the sintered porous metal bearing have higher vibration and acoustic noise by dry contact and large tolerance of the bearing parts. The Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) with grooves is appropriate for spindle motors adequate in regards to mechanical vibration and acoustic noise. The paper shows the performance comparisons of between sintered porous metal bearing and FDB, and each FDBs according to the tooling deviations of grooves by the Finite Element Analysis(FEA) of the mechanical field. This paper shows the methods to make the grooves, the groove's depth, and the prototype of the motor with the fluid dynamic bearing. The performance characteristics of the grooves with the FDB are verified by the experimental results.
