Automotive wheel bearings are a critical component of vehicles that support their weight and facilitate rotation. Life and stiffness are significant performance characteristics of wheel bearings. Designing wheel bearings involves finding optimal design variables that satisfy both performances. CO2 emission reduction and fuel efficiency regulations attribute to the recent increase in design requirements for lightweight and compact automotive parts while maintaining performance. However, achieving a design that maintains performance while reducing weight poses challenges, as performance and weight are generally inversely proportional. In this study, we perform design optimization of automotive wheel bearings considering life and stiffness. We develop a program that calculates the basic rated life and modified rated life based on international standards for evaluating the life of wheel bearings. We develop a regression equation using regression analysis to address the time-consuming stiffness analysis during repetitive analysis. We perform ANOVA and main effect analyses to understand the statistical characteristics of the developed regression equation. Furthermore, we verify its reliability by comparing the predicted and test results. We perform design optimization using the developed life prediction program, stiffness regression equation and weight regression equation. We select bearing specifications and geometry as design variables, weight as the cost function, and life and stiffness as constraints. Through design optimization, we investigate the influence of design variables on the cost function and constraints by comparing the initial and optimal design values.
In the industry, the use of lightweight bearings is increasing to minimize motor power loss, and in particular, the application of next-generation systems such as robots and drones is increasing. Bearing manufacturers are producing lightweight bearings by changing the bearing material, but related researches is insufficient. In this paper, life test and structural analysis were performed for lightweight bearings, and shape parameters and scale parameters were derived based on the life test results. It was confirmed that the shape parameter was 2.52 and the scale parameter was 164 hours. As a result of calculating the dynamic load rating based on the B10 life, it was confirmed that the dynamic load rating of the lightweight bearing was 7% compared to the formula suggested by ISO 281. The reason is that the material of the retainer, which is a major failure part, is a polyamide 66 series that reacts sensitively to heat, so It is judged to show a lot of difference from the ISO 281 calculation formula.
The transmission of tracked vehicles performs complex functions as steering, shifting, braking, etc. and the system level life time has been a key influenced by the number of sub-parts like as gear assembly, torque converter, clutches, bearings and so on. In particular, the mechanical type steering system in tracked vehicle has impact shock torques in steering shift and those kind of shock torques can effect on the durability of many sub-parts in power train system. The field failure modes of gear assembly, steering assembly and the bearings of output shaft appear as a very complex phenomenon. In this study, the actual failure, which may occur in field, of the transmission was investigated comprehensively and that the endurance test on the resulting output shaft bearing failure analysis and life assessment was performed. Life time test method used in this study, developed for the purpose of the internal usage, and under these testing techniques the impact of the each bearing damage, which used in tracked vehicle transmission left / right outputs of different structures, was analyzed.
The transportation is almost dependent on a single fuel petroleum with transportation energy dilemma. Hybrid Electric Vehicle(HEV) technology holds more advantages on efficiency improvements for petroleum consumption at the transportation. And bearing is recognized as the important component of gearbox. Gearboxes for HEV transmission have been ensured the highest reliability over some years in withstanding high dynamic loads. At the same time, the demands of lightweight design and cost minimization are required by thought-out design, high-quality material, superior production quality and maintenance. In order to design a reliable and lightweight gearbox, it is necessary to analyze bearing rating life methods between standard and different bearing companies with calculation methods for modification factors. In this paper, the influence of life time of bearings will be pointed out. Bearing contact stress and load stress distribution of HEV gearbox are obtained and compared with Romaxdesigner and BearinX. And the unequal wear of the left bearing for the gearbox intermediate shaft is investigated between simulation and test.

The objective of this paper is to introduce the standard of evaluation methods and fatigue test for linear motion rolling bearing. In particular, attention well be given to the list of evaluation and fatigue results in this paper. The life of a linear motion rolling bearing is given by the length of distance covered between the connection parts before the first evidence of fatigue develops in the material of one of the raceways of rolling elements. The main factors that contribute to fatigue failures include: Number of load cycles experienced; Range of stress experienced in each load cycle; Mean stress experienced in each toad cycle; Presence of local stress concentrations.
Because the journal and bearing surface are fully separated by the oil film during the normal operation, fluid film bearings operating in the hydrodynamic lubrication region are expected to have an infinite life. However, there are many parameters that lead to interfere with the normal operation of the bearing and lead to its failure. In this paper, both the causes and countermeasures of the bearing failure are described. Also, the characteristics of wiped bearing surface are investigated through mechanical and chemical test.
In In this study, we compared the results of a ball bearing life prediction model based on rolling element loads with the results of fatigue life prediction of ball bearings when a stress-based contact fatigue life prediction technique is applied to the ball bearing. We calculate the load acting on each rolling element by the external load of the bearing and apply the result to the Lundberg-Palmgren (LP) theory to calculate ball bearing life based on the rolling element. We also calculate stress-based ball bearing life through contact and fatigue analyses based on contact modeling of the ball and raceway while considering the fatigue test results of AISI 52100 steel. In stress-based life prediction, we use three high-cycle fatigue-determination equations that can predict the fatigue life when multi-axis proportional loads such as rolling-slide contact conditions are applied. These equations are derived from the stress invariant and critical plane methods and the mesoscopic approach. Life expectancy results are compared with those of the LP model. Results of the analysis indicated that the fatigue life was predicted to be lower in the order of the Crossland, Dang Van, and Matake models. Of the three, the Dang Van fatigue model was found to be the closest to the LP life.
The processing conditions for the synthesis of platelet WS$_2$ lubricant powder through the solid-gas reaction were optimized. The tungsten and sulfur powders were sealed in a vacuum of 10$^{-6}$ torr, prior to heat-treating at 850$\circ$C for 8 days. The react~on product showed the well-developed platelet WS$_2$ powder with an average size of 3.8 $\mu$m. The synthesized WS$_2$ powder was coated on the commercial deep grooved ball bearing (No. 6203) to examine the effects of WS$_2$ coating layer on the noise and endurance of the ball bearing. The level of noise obtained from WS$_2$ coated-ball bearing was higher (56 dB) than the value occurred in the case of greece (37 dB). The life-time of the ball-bearing assembled after coating WS$_2$ powder increased 50 times compared to the non-coated bali-bearing.
Reliability of automotive parts has been one of the most interesting fields in the automotive industry. Especially, a small DC motor was issued because of the increasing adoption for passengers' safety and convenience. For several years, small DC motors have been studied and some problems of a life test method were found out. The field condition was not considered enough in the old life test method. It also needed a lot of test time. For precise life estimation and accelerated life test, new life test procedure was developed based on measured field condition. The vibration condition on vehicle and latent force on fan motor shaft were measured and correlated with each other. We converted the acceleration data into the load data and calculated the equivalent load from integrated value. We found the relationship which can be used for accelerated life test without changing the severity by using different loading factors.
