The Pohang Light Source (PLS) of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), which was constructed in 1994, is a 3rd generation synchrotron light source user facility. It consists of 2.5 GeV linear accelerator and a storage ring with circumference of 280 m. Presently, 27 beamlines around the storage ring are in operation providing synchrotron radiations to users. In addition, PAL has a construction project of the 4th generation light source. In this paper, the operation status of the PLS is described and the prospect of the 4th generation light source is reviewed.

We have developed a laser welding monitoring system to monitor laser welding process conditions such as sample feed rate, laser focal position, and laser power. A 2 ㎾ Nd:YAG CW laser beam has been applied to the welding of a stainless steel plate (SUS306) to investigate the welding monitoring. Theradiation signal from the weld pool was guided back through the focusing optics and the laser delivery fiber, and measured by a photo detector. By changing the focus of the laser beam along the z-direction, the penetration depth of the welding material has been measured. That shows the penetration depth depends on the frequency fluctuations of the plume signals which can be used in welding quality control.
Purpose: To evaluate the contralateral breast dose using a virtual wedge compared with that using a Physical wedge and an open beam in a Siemens linear accelerator. Materials and Methods: The contralateral breast dose was measured using diodes placed on a humanoid phantom. Diodes were placed at 5.5 cm (position 1), 9.5 cm (position 2), and 14 cm (position 3) along the medial-lateral line from the medial edge of the treatment field. A 6-MV photon beam was used with tangential irradiation technique at 50 and 230 degrees of gantry angle. Asymmetrically collimated $17{\times}10cm$ field was used. for the first set of experiment, four treatment set-ups were used, which were an open medial beam with a 30-degree wedged lateral beam (physical and virtual wedges, respectively) and a 15-degree wedged medial beam with a 15-degree wedged lateral beam (physical and virtual wedges, respectively). The second set of experiment consists of setting with medial beam without wedge, a 15-degree wedge, and a 50-degree wedge (physical and virtual wedges, respectively). Identical monitor units were delivered. Each set of experiment was repeated for three times. Results: In the first set of experiment, the contralateral breast dose was the highest at the position 1 and decreased in order of the position 2 and 3. The contralateral breast dose was reduced with open beam on the medial side ($2.70{\pm}1.46%$) compared to medial beam with a wedge (both physical and virtual) ($3.25{\pm}1.59%$). The differences were larger with a physical wedge ($0.99{\pm}0.18%$) than a virtual wedge ($0.10{\pm}0.01%$) at all positions. The use of a virtual wedge reduced the contralateral breast dose by 0.12% to 1.20% of the proscribed dose compared to a physical wedge with same technique. In the second experiment, the contralateral breast dose decreased in order of the open beam, the virtual wedge, and the physical wedge at the position 1, and it decreased in order of a physical wedge, an open beam, and a virtual wedge at the position 2 and 3. Conclusion: The virtual wedge equipped in a Siemens linear accelerator was found to be useful in reducing dose to the contralateral breast. Our additional finding was that the surface dose distribution from the Siemens accelerator was different from a Varian accelerator.
Purpose: This pilot study aimed to evaluate changes in joint space (JS) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of patients diagnosed with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA) and to determine the association between occlusal changes and JS. Methods: CBCT images were used to measure the anterior, superior, and posterior JSs of the sagittal plane. The differences in JS values over time and between groups were compared. The percentage change in the anteroposterior position of the mandibular condyle between groups was also analyzed. Results: Thirty-four subjects (mean age=43.91±20.13), comprising eight males (23.5%) and 26 females (76.5%), were divided into 18 patients with no change in occlusion (NCO) and 16 patients with a change in occlusion (CO) during TMJ OA. The JS measurements of the study subjects showed a decrease in anterior joint space (AJS) values over time. There was no difference in JS measurements between the groups at T1 and T2. AJS values measured at T1 were lower in the CO group than in the NCO group, but the difference was not statistically significant. In both groups, a posterior position of the mandibular condyle was initially observed with high frequency. However, there is a statistically significant difference in CBCT images taken after occlusal changes, with an increased frequency of condyles observed in the anterior or central positions. Conclusions: In conclusion, AJS decreased over time in TMJ OA, and the mandibular condyle became more anteriorly positioned with occlusal changes. Therefore, clinicians should diligently monitor mandibular condyle morphology and JS using CBCT, along with the patient's clinical symptoms, to treat and control TMJ OA effectively.
Postoperative radiotherapy of breast cancer makes it possible to reduce loco-regional recurrence of breast cancer. The treatment technique, which can reduce the low-dose region at the junction and lung, is required. To produce proper dose distribution of internal mammary chain and chest wall, authors tried to find the method to expose $^{60}Co\;\gamma-ray$ on internal mammary region and 7MeV electron on chest wall. Exposure time of $^{60}Co\;\gamma$ and monitor unit of 9MeV were selected so that dose of $^{60}Co$ at 4cm depth was the same as that of 7Mev electron at $80\%$ dose depth. The position and direction of electron beam were changed for $^{60}Co$ beam: $0^{\circ},\;5^{\circ}$ for 0cm seperation; $0^{\circ},\;5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}$ for 0.5cm seperation; $5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ},\;15^{\circ}$ for 1cm seperation. The results are as followings. 1. When the seperation of two fields was increased, dose on the axis of $^{60}Co$ beam was increased and dose at the junction region decreased while the volume of lung to be exposed to high dose and hot spot size were irregularly changed. 2. The dose distribution in the target volume of internal mammary and chest wall was most ideal when the seperation of two fields was $0\~0.5cm$ and the direction of electron beam was parallel to $^{60}Co$ beam.

Upon radiation treatment, it is the important factor to monitor the patient's motion during radiation irradiated, since it can determine whether the treatment is successful. Thus, we have developed the system in which the patient's motion is monitored in real time and moving treatment position can be automatically corrected during radiation irradiation. We have developed the patient's position monitoring system in which the patient's position is three dimensionally identified by using two CCD cameras which are orthogonal located around the isocenter. This system uses the image pattern matching technique using a normalized cross-correlation method. We have developed the system in which trigger signal for beam on and off is generated by quantitatively analyzing the changes in a treatment position through delivery of the images taken from CCD cameras to the computer and the motor of moving couch can be controlled. This system was able to automatically correct a patient's position with the resolution of 0.5 mm or less.

Introduction: With the development of dose calculation algorithms for electron beams, 3D RTP systerns are available for electron beam dose distribution commercially. However, no studies evaluated the accuracy of dose calculation with ADAC Pinnacle system for electron beams. So, the accuracy of the ADAC system is investigated by comparing electron dose distributions from ADAC system against the BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc. Methods: A total of 33 breast cancer patients treated with 6, 9, and 12MeV electrons in our institution was selected for this study. The first part of this study is to compare the dose distributions of measurement, TPS and the BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc code in flat water phantom at gantry zero position and for a 10 ${\times}$ 10 $\textrm{cm}^2$ field. The second part is to evaluate the monitor unit obtained from measurement and TPS. Adding actual breast patient's irregular blocks to the first part, monitor units to deliver 100 cGy to the dose maximum (dmax) were calculated from measurement and 3D RTP system. In addition, the dose distributions using blocks were compared between TPS and the BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc code. Finally, the effects of tissue inhomogeneities were studied by comparing dose distributions from Pinnacle and Monte Carlo method on CT data sets. Results: The dose distributions calculated using water phantom by the TPS and the BEAMnrc/ DOSXYZnrc code agreed well with measured data within 2% of the maximum dose. The maximum differences of monitor unit between measured and Pinnacle TPS in flat water phantom at gantry zero position were 4% for 6 MeV and 2% for 9 and 12 MeV electrons. In real-patient cases, comparison of depth doses and lateral dose profiles calculated by the Pinnacle TPS, with BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc code has generally shown good agreement with relative difference less than +/-3%. Discussion: For comparisons of real-patient cases, the maximum differences between the TPS and BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc on CT data were 10%. These discrepancies were due in part to the inaccurate dose calculation of the TPS, so that it needs to be improved properly. Conclusions: On the basis of the results presented in this study, we can conclude that the ADAC Pinnacle system for electron beams is capable of giving results absolutely comparable to those of a Monte Carlo calculation.
PLS(Pohang Light Source) is 2.5 Gev synchrotron radiation source in Pohang, Korea, which is under operation since 1995. The hardware and software of the old BPM(Beam Position Monitor) data acquisition system for the PLS storage ring was completely upgraded to increase its performance and stability. The new BPM data acquisition system is based on VME-based EPICS (Experimental Physics and Instrument Control System) IOC system. We used 16-bit resolution analog-to-digital conversion board to digitize analog BPM signals. We developed a data average software to average raw BPM data using reflective memory board. We also developed device drivers for VME I/O boards used, IOC database for PV's(Process Variables). The new BPM data acquisition system is currently running for routine operation with good performance and stability. In this paper, we present the hardware and software of the new BPM data acquisition system DTL water skid cooling system and Resonant Control Cooling.

The magnets and vacuum chambers, which are the main facilities of the Pohang light source are installed on the storage-ring girders. System safety and reliability should be taken into account for the precise operating of the main facilities, so vibration analysis is essential to do this. Static and seismic analyses were performed for the design of structure considering safety, and also frequency and response spectrum analyses were performed for the precise alignment. With these results, the effects of surrounding vibration were checked. This paper explains about the design and vibration analysis of girder systems.

Purpose: To monitor the changes of location of prostate gland using DIPS and to examine the adjustment and proton beam therapy depending on the movement of prostate gland in proton beam therapy for prostate gland in which a fiducial gold marker was inserted. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in ten patients with prostate cancer who received proton beam therapy since April of 2008. To monitor the change of prostate location, three fiducial gold markers were inserted prior to the treatment. To minimize the movement of prostate gland, patients were recommended to urinate prior to the treatment, to intake a certain amount of water and to concomitantly undergo rectal balloon. In these patients, the set-up position was identical to that for a CT-simulation. The PA (posterior-anterior) and lateral images were obtained using both DIPS (digital image positioning system) and a plain radiography, and they were compared between the two imaging modalities. Thus, the changes of the location of fiducial gold marker were assessed based on three coordinates (x, y, z) and then adjusted. This was followed by proton beam therapy. Results: Images which were taken using a plain radiography were compared with those which were taken using DIPS. In ten patients, according to a reference bony marker, the mean changes of the location of fiducial gold marker based on an iso-center were X-axis: $\pm$0.116 cm, Y-axis: $\pm$0.19 cm and Z-axis: $\pm$0.176 cm. These ten patients showed a difference in the changes of location of prostate gland and it ranged between RT: 0.04 cm and RT: 0.24 cm on the X-axis; between Inf: 0.03 cm and Sup: 0.42 cm on the Y-axis; and Post: 0.05 cm and Ant: 0.35 cm on the Z-axis. Conclusion: To minimize the movement of prostate gland, as the pre-treatment prior to the treatment. In all the patients, however, three fiducial gold markers showed a daily variation which were inserted in the prostate gland. Based on the above data, Thus, the requirement of gold marker matching system depending on the daily variation in the proton beam therapy for which more accurate establishment of target was confirmed. It is assumed that an accurate effect of proton beam therapy would be enhanced by adjusting the target-center depending on the location change of prostate gland using DIPS which was used in the current study.
