Residual deformation of high-speed railway bridge piers is cumulative under repeated earthquakes, and influences the safety and ride comfort of high-speed trains. This paper investigates the effects of the peak ground acceleration, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and axial compression ratio on the cumulative deformation through finite element analysis. A simply-supported beam bridge pier model is established using nonlinear beam-column elements in OpenSees, and validated against a shaking table test. Repeated earthquakes were input in the model. The results show that the cumulative deformation of the bridge piers under repeated earthquakes increases with the peak ground acceleration and the axial compression ratio, and decreases with the longitudinal reinforcement ratio.

The panel shear and bearing strengths determining the seismic resistance of reinforced concrete column-to-steel beam connections are predicted by various methods for four previously tested exterior beam-column joints. The analytical approach to model the joint deformation is also examined. Several analyses incorporating the deformations of panel shear and bearing in the joint are demonstrated using a analyses incorporating the deformations of panel shear and bearing in the joint are demonstrated using a fairly simple connection model in the commercial packages such as Drain2dx and IDARC. The strength prediction results indicated that the ASCE method with the modifcation of the comprssion strut contribution is th most accurate. It is also considered that the analytical model presented including the joint deformation can be used for the overall analysis
The rigid connections of I-beams to Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS) in steel structures usually behave as semi-rigid connection. This behavior is directly related to the column face deformation. The deformation in the wall of RHS column in the connection zone causes a relative rotation between beam end and column axis, which consequently reduces the rigidity of beam-column connection. In the present paper, the percentages of connection rigidity reduction for serviceability conditions are evaluated by using the finite element analysis. Such percentages for RHS columns without internal stiffeners are considerable, and can be calculated from presented graphs.
This study concerns about calculating exact natural frequencies of frames using a single variable shear deformation theory (SVSDT) which considers the parabolic shear stress distribution across the cross section. Free vibration analyses are performed for multi-bay, multi-storey and multi-bay multi-storey type frame structures. Dynamic stiffness formulations are derived and used to obtain first five natural frequencies of frames. Different beam and column cross sections are considered to reveal their effects on free vibration analysis. The calculated natural frequencies are tabulated with the results obtained using Euler-Bernoulli Beam Theory (EBT) and Timoshenko Beam Theory (TBT). Moreover, the effects of inner and outer columns on natural frequencies are compared for multi-bay frames. Several mode shapes are plotted.
This paper discusses a new model for investigating the micro-mechanical behavior of beam-like structures composed of various elastic moduli and complex geometries varying through the cross-sectional directions and also periodically-repeated along the axial directions. The original three-dimensional problem is first formulated in an unified and compact intrinsic form using the concept of decomposition of the rotation tensor. Taking advantage of two smallness of the cross-sectional dimension-to-length parameter and the micro-to-macro heterogeneity and performing homogenization along dimensional reduction simultaneously, the variational asymptotic method is used to rigorously construct an effective zeroth-order beam model, which is similar a generalized Timoshenko one (the first-order shear deformation model) capable of capturing the transverse shear deformations, but still carries out the zeroth-order approximation which can maximize simplicity and promote efficiency. Two examples available in literature are used to demonstrate the consistence and efficiency of this new model, especially for the structures, in which the effects of transverse shear deformations are significant.
In this paper, thermal vibration behavior of nanoscale beams made of functionally graded (FG) materials subjected to various types of thermal loading are investigated. A Reddy shear deformation beam theory which captures both the microstructural and shear deformation effects without the need for any shear correction factors is employed. Material properties of FG nanobeam are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary gradually along the thickness according to the power-law form. The influence of small scale is captured based on nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. The nonlocal equations of motion are derived through Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying analytical solution. The comparison of the obtained results is conducted with those of nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and it is demonstrated that the proposed modeling predict correctly the vibration responses of FG nanobeams. The effects of nonlocal parameter, material graduation, mode number, slenderness ratio and thermal loading on vibration behavior of the nanobeams are studied in detail.
In this work, a new trigonometry theory of shear deformation is developed for the static analysis of thick isotropic beams. The number of variables used in this theory is identical to that required in the theory of Euler-Bernoulli, sine function is used in the displacement field in terms of the coordinates of the thickness to represent the effects of shear deformation. The advantage of this theory is that shear stresses can be obtained directly from the relationships constitute, while respecting the boundary conditions at the free surface level of the beam. Therefore, this theory avoids the use of shear correction coefficients. The differential equilibrium equations are obtained using the principle of virtual works. A thick isotropic beam is considered, whose numerical study to show the effectiveness of this theory.
Dynamic response characteristics of a beam undergoing impulsive force are investigated using the wavelet transform method in this study. When an impulse is applied to an arbitrary position of a beam, it will generate a structural deformation wave. The characteristics of the wave are changing in the domain of time and space. The maximum amplitude of each natural frequency mode and the time to reach the maximum amplitude are obtained in this study. The effects of the location of impulse on the variations of the dynamic characteristics is also investigated.
